The small CUV segment has grown tremendously over the last few years and the 2021 #KiaSeltos and 2020 #MazdaCX30 are two of the newest entries in the segment. Both are based off car platforms but with raised ground clearance and additional cladding to give them more rugged looks. For around $25-30k, which one is the better buy? The #Seltos or #CX30? #Mazda #Kia

Happy Friday guys! It was interesting to compare two of the newest small SUV's you can buy today, we've also been noticing in our local DC area that we see more of the Kia Seltos on the road versus the CX-30. What is it looking like in your local area?

Redline Reviews you need to live with rotary controller. I thought it would be annoying in my CX-5, but it is so easy to keep your eyes on the road and adjust the screen when you get use to it. Looked at KIA, but no seat memory on specs in Australia and a general overall feel of cheapness, we bought a Mazda.

I know we can't compare, but I drove the Seltos and the CX-30 available in my country (Mexico), here, the Mazda is a bit more expensive but it is a much more upscale car, the Seltos feels more like an economy car and the Mazda has more of a midsize sedan feel to it. Feels twice the price than the Kia for about 10% more cost.

If mazda CX30 is twice the price of seltos, I would gladly take seltos, and everyone will take seltos too. Even Though CX30 feels more premium and upscale, but doesn’t feel like twice the price, like the actual MSRP, it only feels 2k more. CX30 MSRP is almost close to Compact SUV segment, I would rather get Compact SUV which is a class above Subcompact SUV.

I really don't understand the obsession with touch screens. I've driven company vehicles with them and find that they can be frustrating while in motion due to trying to touch the right item and the ride motions and/or the road bumps causing mistakes and having to divert my driving attention. I trend to agree with Mazda and they are less safe while driving. I own a 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature, and once you learn how to use it, the control knob and buttons work well and you learn to work them by feel and it is less distracting. Overall I've been very happy with the several Mazda's I've owned. I wish the new CX-30 had cooled seats. a 360 degree camera with parking sensors and a 40/20/40 split rear seat. And IMO, the side cladding is too heavy.

@@edkar7604 actually the Mazda is $2,800 more than the Seltos and how the Seltos is doing sale wise the depreciation is very low. While Mazda does have the nicer cabin their materials aren’t holding up very well, the 3 low mileage CX-30’s I went to check out had shiny leather steering wheel on the center and to the left side grip as if they were already wearing and the creases on the seats were very visible on the bolsters. All 3 looked older than my current car that has 90k on it. Looked at 1 seltos so far it had 7k more miles than the Mazda and it still felt fresh. Looking at a Tucson next and comparing them.

I have to disagree. Had a Mazda 3 for 7 years, and while the knob is fine for Mazdaconnect, it’s awful for CarPlay. I just bought a Tiguan and the touch screen is much better and safer because I spend less time staring at the screen seeing if I’ve scrolled to the item I want to select. I just tap what I want and look back at the road.

I have a 2016 Mazda 3 and in the 4 years I've owned it, I may have used the touch screen 3 times. Like so many have said, the rotary knob is intuitive and works so much better. I have a touch screen on my lap top too, but don't use that either. A mouse or track pad do the job better. Just like someone else said, it would be like preferring using the buttons on your TV instead of the remote. Think of the rotary knob as your mouse or remote. That being said, it would be nice if Mazda kept the touch screen as an option for those that think they need it.

Cesar478 876, these were only found previously (and currently) in luxury brands like Lexus, Mercedes, BMW & Alfa Romeo but then Mazda adopted this yrs ago...unfortunately majority of drivers are just not used to this type of system as touchscreens have been the norm in the mainstream brands that’s why people hated them (cause they’re not used to them) but if you really analyze it, there’s a reason that some of the luxury brands had this - simply more intuitive. However, the masses still prefer touchscreens that’s why the luxury brands had both the controller knobs and touchscreen feature enabled at same time. Wish Mazda did the same in their newer vehicles and not disable the touchscreen - give drivers the choice and not do it for them! I find the knobs intuitive...owned 3 Mazdas

I do agree on the cladding issue on the Mazda for lighter color cars, but the overall style exterior, I like the Mazda and the interior blows the Kia out of the water. Mazda's transmissions has always been very good and even though people think 6 speed is boring, it is much better than all these CVTs and many of these wannabe dual clutch. The only reason Kia might win here is if someone has a family and need to haul more things more often. I think the Mazda style, exterior and interior, driving ability is better. If the Mazda is only $1k more after you factor in adding a sunroof to the Seltos, I'd think the Mazda is nicer and more than worth the slightly higher cost. Also, I think Sofyan suffers from the same problem a lot of automotive journalists have when complaining about engine performance - their perception is warped from driving so many performance cars. Both of these really are more than enough for the average driver. I'd be hard pressed to find a new vehicle today outside the absolute cheapest subcompacts that I would consider actually underpowered for daily driving.

I just bought the CX-30 in white. In Japan. With a diesel. I took a trip of about 70 miles through the mountains earlier this week and averaged 55 mpg. I sold my Volvo V60 to get this and have zero regrets. I loved the Volvo on the highway, but the turbo 1.6 around town was pesky and a pain to drive in Japan with its narrow roads. What I took away from this review is that it’s a pain in the bum to make cars for a world market.

Something not mentioned in the Kia Seltos/Mazda CX-30 comparison is their off road and 4-wheel drive capabilities. Although obviously neither vehicle is meant for heavy duty rock climbing prowess, the CX-30 has an advantage over the Seltos in that, in traveling over a ravine while using only two wheels, the CX-30 manages to pull out a lot more effortlessly than the Seltos. Also, the Seltos’ dual clutch transmission overheats when pushed hard in off-road conditions. However, the CX-30’s 6-speed automatic doesn’t overheat even when pushed hard. The weakness in the CX-30 in this regard is the lower ground clearance versus the Seltos.

For me its the CX-30. I test drove the White Base model and was impressed by its drive quality and features for 22k. Didn't mind the cladding since in the area we live, the cladding comes handy. Cloth seats on the base CX-30 was really nice. Seltos, might have the nice 'front' and ground clearance, but the rest...yea. I'll take the CX-30.

I wonder what percentage of Seltos sales will actually be the SX Turbo trim. Most other trims have much less equipment (cloth seats, semi-independent rear suspsension, halogen headlights, less ADAS, smaller engine, CVT, smaller infotainment, cheaper interior) than in any other comparison, the CX-30 is a much better driving and value car. The 2.5L, 6spd auto, and still leatherette and nice interior of the lower trimmed CX-30's would embarass the Seltos models with the 2.0L engine, CVT, and cloth seats. That being said, the Seltos SX Turbo is a great SUV in addition to the CX-30 and I've been interested in both for its looks and driving; I just wish Kia brought a better value proposition to idk, every other trim of the Seltos.

Great job on a comprehensive review! Definitely disagree with you about touch screens though. We have a 2016 BMW Z4, and a 2020 Kia Telluride. Using the control knob in the Z4 (same as in the Mazda) is MUCH easier, nicer, and safer than the (newer, obviously) touch screen in the Kia. Making selections on the touch screen is slower, more difficult (especially on non-smooth roads), and far less safe. I agree with Mazda’s use of non-touch screens. We’ve had a few Mazdas and they were very good (B2000 truck, MPV minivan, MX-5 Miata (NC), and my daughter had a previous generation Mazda 3. This is our first Kia so hopefully it’s as reliable as the Mazdas were; they certainly are killing it on the styling and features.

"I don't like it", so tired of testers with no regard for real world driving, real buyers needs and total disregard of maintenance/reliability issues. Non turbo, relatively big displacement with a conventional automatic in the Mazda. Translation, less stressed engine, no overheating DTC in traffic or if you take it on a trail (see some "off road" reviews with transmission temp warnings and smell of burned clutch material) all pointing towards more reliable package. I am looking at the Mazda, this is number whatever review, so much fluff and "marketing" info out there, yet so little real world info. I guess these are the times we live in.

Nice review. I've had the Seltos (fwd 'S' trim) for over a year now, and it fits all of my needs. I think there are two reasons to buy and SUV - ease of entry and cargo space, and the Kia Seltos is the best in this segment for those. I also find the drivers seat to be very comfortable. I actually ended up with the Seltos in a spontaneous purchase when I took my Soul in for an oil change because the Seltos was really what I was looking for (and didn't exist) when I bought the Soul - a small SUV with decent cargo space. In the FWD version, I've easily averaged 33-34 mpg with each tank of gas I've measured (I don't think the computer mpg readings are very accurate). I am sure other cars in this segment ride better (like my wife's Suby Crosstrek), but I think the Kia checks more boxes for what I think an SUV does best, and if it proves reliable, I expect to have it for a while.

Your reviews are very detail oriented, which is awesome. Mazda has traditional "projector" headlight housing with LEDs. This Kia, the latest generation Honda Accords, Type R, and the latest Toyota RAV4 have a different kind of LED, where multiple LEDs lights are "reflected" on mirrors. This was, I think, inspired from Audi, which introduced this kind of lighting in their A7s. Did you ever compare these two lighting modes at night? What are your thoughts on these two lighting systems? I wish you could add (short?) night-time driving review as well.

Just test drove the 2023 Seltos SX and the 2023 Mazda CX-30 Carbon Edition. Acceleration felt negligible. The Seltos 1.6L turbo was far more whiny and high-pitched noisy than the Mazda 2.5L. The Mazda felt like it had a more satisfying sound when stepping on the gas. The Seltos had more body roll and felt less stable than the Mazda, especially when taking a cloverleaf on-ramp to enter Interstate driving. Around here, it's a huge bonus during rush hour, being you're entering traffic traveling 75-80mph. Ground clearance, the CX-30 has 8.0in, the Seltos has 7.3in The Seltos had more cargo space. But we also have a Honda Pilot, so if we need to haul anything significant, or going on a family vacation - we won't be taking anything the size of the CX-30 or the Seltos. Appearance. The Seltos (and the Niro - as we tested that one as well) looks and feels more like a toy. Lots of molded plastic. Kia loves using odd textured molded plastic parts around various parts of the car, where it's on the front grill surround, around windows, across a good portion of their SUV line-up. The plastic cladding on the lower portion of the CX-30, while looking rather overkill, I much prefer, as it'll protect the paint on the lower part of the car when driving on gravel or dirt roads - even two tracks...a bit further off the beaten path of pavement. And for canoe fishing in some remote areas, this is a nice feature. It's one of the big features that was a deciding factor. Interior: The inside of the Seltos continues with the cheap and toylike feel and appearance. I do prefer Kia's touch screen over Mazda's dial/button interface for navigating the infotainment system, though it's not a deal breaker for us - we'll get used to it either way. Overall, Mazda has the interior nailed down in spades. It's so much more refined and comfortable - and if I'm going on a long solo roadtrip, I'll definitely want that extra bit of comfort. If you're looking to haul kids, then yes. You're going to want something bigger - and for that, I'd go with the next step up - a compact or mid-sized SUV. ...or even a full-sized SUV. The one place Kia is better, is viewing through the windows, but the CX-30 doesn't feel unsafe at all. It was definitely good entering and changing lanes on the interstate in heavy traffic, as well as navigating heavy traffic in town. Mazda definitely won us over, and it wasn't close. YMMV for sure - it's all subjective.

Picked up my new Seltos AWD Turbo from Durham KIA here in Canada last night. It’s early days, but I’m loving it. Oddly enough, the other vehicles I tested were the CX30, the VW Tiguan, and the Kona. The CX30 was my second choice, but the Seltos won it on power, transmission, and steering feel/handling. Black on black leather (I think it’s synthetic leather, but it looks good enough and I love the cooled seat feature!). PS - I can’t abide that puke yellow on the test KIA. it does the car no favours. Mrs Farzana The experience so far has been very good. I don’t drive it hard, and am pleasantly surprised by the excellent fuel consumption - I’m averaging, over the first 2000 km, 7.8 L/100 km (30.2 US MPG). The Dual Clutch transmission can be jerky at times, but only very rarely, and at parking lot speeds. The Bose sound was better, once I adjusted the bass/mid/treble to my liking. Seats are comfortable, and I’ve used the cooled seats a lot this summer. One major inconvenience, at least to me, is the auto stop/start feature. I don’t like it, and you have disable it every time you drive the car. The Rain Sense wipers work great, as do the Auto High Beam LED headlight function, which is great coming home from the cottage at night. And if you need to pass a car, the 60 km to 120 km acceleration is excellent with the 1.6 Turbo in the SX I only use the Heads Up display occasionally, but it also works well, once you set the height you like. Very handy, the HUD also has the blind spot monitor, a great feature. And, for a sub-compact, I think the Seltos is the biggest one out there. Yup. Overall, I’m very happy. Oh, and also, no delivery faults at all!

If I'm keeping something short-term (leasing), I'm going with the Kia. They've been killing it lately with the styling, the tech, and the standard features! However, I'm hesitant on the long-term reliability of the turbo and transmission given their history w/ the Theta-II engines and the dual-clutch transmission failures... If I'm keeping it longer term (which I typically do for cars), will take the Mazda any day. Proven engine and transmission and fantastic styling! Why change something if it isn't broken? I was a fan of redline reviews then eventually found his reviews too middling and never watched his videos for the past year. I tried it with this review, but again, it didn't give me the data I want. Sofyan spends too much time on the exterior(when you drive the car, you can't see the exterior of the car....and beauty is too subjective to spend this much time on), especially on lighting, cladding and paint job (we get it, you don't like puke yellow paint and plastic cladding), spends an inordinate amount of time talking about stiching and hard plastic vs soft plastics. Spends a lot of time griping about non essential features like heated steering wheels, cooling seats, power lift gates and whether your seats are made out of nappa leather or not. Doesn't spend much time about: - The driving feel - The lights, if you're going to grip this much on lighting, maybe you should have a segment on how well they light up the road. - The transmissions - The handling with the tire difference and the suspension differences - The engine feel (turbo vs natural aspirated) - Noise and vibration - He never takes it for a real ride, just driving in boring everyday traffic (highways and regular roads) - Never talks about pricing more than in a superficial way. - Never talks the differences between trim levels in a meaningful way. I guess I'll stick with my holy trinity, savagegeese for car mechanics and his insightful (if overly pessimistic) commentary on their place in the market, Alex on autos if I want to learn everything about the car plus his insightful scoring system and chartsand throttle house for boy racing enthusiast reviews. These guys put the car through it's paces, in their own way.
