I'm a car enthusiast, SUV hater, and a Kia salesman. That being said, the Sorento impresses me every time I drive it. It's surprisingly quick for an SUV, the seats and adjustability does WONDERS for my bad back, the safety and tech features go above and beyond, and the car just has an overall premium feel. Add the 5 yr 60k bumper-to-bumper and 10 yr 100k powertrain warranty to that mix and this is the #1 SUV I would recommend to all but the filthy rich. I never ever thought I would become a fan of an SUV....
@stephenhendricks1034 жыл бұрын
Very perceptive review as usual, guys. I own a 2018 top trim (SX-L) Sorento. It was greatly improved over the 2012 version that I traded for it. Each has been a goldilocks vehicle for my family of four (2 adults, a teenage daughter, and a big dog.) Except for a GTI the 2012 version was the only vehicle I've replaced with a later version of the same car in almost 50 years of driving. Some thoughts... () Interior space. The feeling of a less room up front isn't and more room in the second row aren't just impressions. KIA has re-jiggered interior space in the new generation. For example, my 2018 Sorento has 44.1" of front seat legroom and an extending driver thigh cushion. There is so much first row legroom that with the seat at the back of its track I can barely reach the pedals. (I'm 5'10"). The 2021 model has been reduced to 41.4", identical to the Telluride and comparable to other midsize SUVs. And in the US version the extending thigh cushion has been eliminated. All in all, unless a driver is over 6'6" the reduction shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, reducing the default legroom in the first row has enabled KIA to increase the legroom in the second row from 39.4" to 41.7", a more generous default space that Mark noticed. And like the Telluride, the second row even has slightly more default legroom than the first row. The third row of the Sorento is definitely not a generous space. In fact, default legroom has been reduced from 31.7" to 29.7" in the 2021 version. Still, it's the same as the Mazda CX-9 that's almost a foot longer and more than the 27.7" offered by the Toyota Highlander that's a half foot longer. If I needed to transport adults in the third row on a regular basis I'd look for another vehicle. But I suspect that most Sorento owners are like us. We use the third row less than 10% of the time. Otherwise, it remains folded but when we have have the need to chauffeur a gaggle of teenagers or more than 4 or 5 passengers on a local trip and the alternative is taking two vehicles, it's a HUGE convenience. All in all I prefer the third row legroom in my 2018 model but since the second row of the 2021 model can be slid forward and remain for adequate for most passengers there and the seat recline feature in the KIA's third row can be adjusted (a feature not available in my Sorento) it's probably a wash unless one really needs a generous third row. If so, get a Telluride or a minivan. Of course, at 189" long the Sorento's 3rd row (when deployed) does impede cargo space behind it. But the 12.6 cubic ft in the 2021 model is actually a significant improvement over the 11.1 cf in my Sorento. And come on, Mark, a Miata has trunk space measuring 4.6 cubic ft. Yes, the Sorento's rear cargo space is smaller than competitors that range from half a foot to a foot more in overall length (The 10" longer CX-9 offers a still small 14.4 cubic ft) but to claim it's less than a Miata is laughable. I wouldn't try to cram six passengers AND luggage/gear on a road trip in the Sorento but even larger midsize SUVs are challenged by that scenario. Again, that's a use case ideal for a minivan. () Engine and Drivetrain. My 2018 Sorento has the same NA V6 as my 2012 version had. It's adequate though a little thirsty but I've been skeptical of small displacement turbo 4 bangers in a two ton plus SUV. A less stressed V6 has always seemed a safer choice in terms of durability and both of my Sorentos have been outstanding in terms of reliability. Have to say, though, that the 2.5L turbo that Hyundai and KIA are offering in a number of vehicles provides some reassurance, especially since it's the base engine in the Genesis GV80 , G80, GV70, KiA's K5 GT, and Sonata N-line as well as the Sorento. the Hyundai/KIA 10 yr/100K warranty the Korean brands offer suggests they have a lot of confidence in the engine. (Automakers don't offer long warranties if they expect to have to redeem them very often.) Furthermore, the 8 speed dual clutch transmission appears to be a big improvement over the previous DCT's from Hyundai/KIA. I'm a DCT fan (I love the dual clutch transmission in my GTI.) All in all, the better performance and improved fuel economy of the new engine/transmission compared to my current Sorento looks to be a significant improvement. On the other hand I strongly suspect you're correct that combining the turbo4 with FWD is a bad idea for all the reasons cited in the video. While the NA base engine is undoubtedly adequate for a FWD Sorento used primarily in an urban/suburban environment I wouldn't consider adding the turbo4 to a FWD version. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see KIA drop that configuration in future years. It's no longer news that the Telluride (and its sibling the Palisade) are game changers in terms of midsize 3 row SUVs. They're exceptional vehicles. But if I were shopping I think I'd still take the Sorento over either one for my family's needs and priorities.

One thing I would like to see during 3rd row reviews is how much leg room there is if you don’t put the middle row all the way back. We have a Highlander and I’ve found the 3rd row is useable if you split the legroom between the 2nd and 3rd row.

Just bought one in the UK. Korean built for us in right hand drive. All UK models are 4wd and the choice is hybrid petrol and diesel. There are three trim levels in hybrid and only the middle one with diesel and the 8 speed DCT. Mine is a diesel. It has a very high spec but loses the Bose stereo, sunroof, head up display and driver's seat memory. I've changed the Volvo XC90 for it and the Sorento is more roomy in all rows, has more comfortable seats, all the safety systems, almost identical performance, less tyre noise. There's even air con controls in the third row, which is as roomy if not more so than the Volvo due to the second row being able to slide forward more while still providing adequate room. The only annoyance is that with every cold start, the lane keeping assist defaults to 'on'. Even if it is set in the dash to 'warning only' it still defaults to steering wheel tugging mode on cold start. Agree about piano black, but this isn't too bad at all. Maybe on the limit of acceptability? The LED lights on mine are automatic but it lacks cornering lights as are fitted to my CR-V or the less effective ones fitted to the XC90. No sectioned selective dipping areas either, which is no loss. The light output is somewhere between the Xenon on my Honda and the ultra bright ones fitted to the Volvo. Far better stop-start controllability than the Volvo system and equal to Honda in that you can stop while controlling whether the engine stops, depending on how hard you press the brake pedal. You couldn't really do that with the Volvo, so the system tended to be manually disabled after every cold start. I've lost that but replaced it with having to disable the lane keep assist. No issue whatsoever with the 8 speed DCT in mine. No vibration from standstill and very predictable smooth changes however driven.

Then you have folks saying the Lexus LX is a waste when its purpose built, can actually go off road reliably, has automatic seats and an auto matic third row and has a reliable power plant but that's over priced? I don't understand reviewers. SG at least critiques all cars regardless. The folks that make excuses for Bentley, RR, Aston, are all kinda annoying. Sad part is I like Harry who reviews these cars but my god some of those cars are appalling for the price they charge. Aston is another prime example, charging as much as they do using Mercedes engines, and building heavy boats that ironically enough can be beaten on a track no less by something like a Challenger Hellcat. While both cars were driven cautiously you would think something like an Aston would put a sizeable gap. fastestlaps.com/articles/aston-martin-db11-beats-dodge-challenger-hellcat-in-a-grand-tour-duel-here-are-the-lap-times#:~:text=The%20new%20Aston%20managed%20to,4%20seconds%20below%20optimal%20pace.

I'm always endlessly amused by scary torque steer suddenly coming from boost (I miss my 1990 Ford Probe GT). But I'm not the target customer. I'd argue the third row seats are perfect for emergency or child carrying duty. Leave them folded down until you need to carry 6 - it's a reasonable compromise for that occasion.
@stephenhendricks1034 жыл бұрын
Hear! Hear! Our Sorento's third row remains folded more than 90% of the time. But when we need to carry 6 or 7 passengers on a local trip and the option is using two vehicles it's a HUGE advantage.

I just bought this in the EX trim with AWD today. I traded in my 2020 Equinox and this is a huge upgrade for me. I love how it rides! Like you said, I think KIA and Hyundai have really invested in improving their automobiles. This Sorento has that entry level luxury feel. :)

Same with my v6 rav4 2wd. In rainy or cold weather, I don't even bother trying to beat someone off the line to get over a lane because I'll get smoked by a Ford Fiesta, nothing but tire spin with such retarded throttle tip in programming.
@realkarfixer82084 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyb4493 That's why I bought the 4wd version of the V-6 Rav4. It hooks and books. I wish it had a better transmission, the gear spacing between 3->4 is too large and the shift programming is only good for EPA/CAFE. Overall it's a great little car, very versatile, but thirsty, so thirsty. My right foot has nothing to do with that I promise ;)

Kia and Hyundai have a habit of giving us nicer exteriors on the Kias and nicer interiors in the Hyandais so since we spend all our time on the inside I have to go with Hyundai. If the Santa Fe interior was in this Kia it would be a home run.

Kia is killing it lately, like the look of the Kia products vs Hyundai
@stephenhendricks1034 жыл бұрын
Matter of taste but I agree with your assessment. Hyundai's designs nearly always seem to me to have been completed when they're subjected to a last committee review where additional creases and bulges are added.

Getting our new AWD Sorento EX tomorrow, very excited! Drove better than everything we tested, be it BMW X5, Lexus RX, mazda, chevy, volvo and 5 others we tested in this size range. Quieter than everything but the Porsche macan (which it matched as far as my crappy phone db meter says), even quieter than the telluride on the interstate. I totally agree about the third row. We tried to get one without it but any trim above base requires the 3rd row option. Oh well. Also you're dead on with the $36k sweet spot. We got everything we wanted for $36,00.01. turbo, awd, pano roof, gray Syntex interior, and a few other things.
