Use what the manufacturer states. 5w40 might be to heavy for some applications. You can find the oil grade and capacity on amsoil.com In this case the owner provided their oil

yes, there is a wide range of weights you can use depending on the weather in cold climates you need 0w30 or 40. Check mercedes to see what oil spec you need, for example the oil used in the video doesn't carry the MB spec, if you are in the USA Mercedes dealers use 5w30 MB 229.52 oil, but this is really just so they can carry a single oil to cover diesel cars as well depending on the year you may only need 229.5 which is easier to find.

You used the wrong oil. This requires Mobil1 ESP X2 oil.
