BMW F850 GSA v. KTM 890 Adventure R v. Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel v. Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro v. Yamaha Tenere 700
Remember back in the day of group gatherings how hard it could be to find time in everyone’s busy schedules to congregate? To get together for a week-long ride or some other getaway? Without fail everything would start to slot into place just in time for your best friend to have something come up. You’d try to reschedule and that too would fall apart for one reason or another. The phrase “herding cats” comes to mind. Locking down this group of middleweight adventure bikes was kind of like that. It’s a test we’ve been attempting to schedule for six months. As is always the case, some “friends” are more reliable than others.
But, none of that matters now because here we are with the MVPs of the scorchin’ hot middleweight adventure segment. Never you mind that these “middleweight’s” displacements have continued to swell as is tradition in motorcycling these days. Rather, focus on the real world functionality of these machines. These bikes are lighter, smaller, and more manageable than their 1200cc(+) counterparts, which, at least for me, makes them more enticing to push the envelope off-road.

Kudos for running the same tires on all bikes! This is for sure the most important baseline factor in doing a comparison. Well done!
@DoRC
@DoRC 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Tires that come stock on the bike are the tires that the vast majority of people are going to be using for at least the first couple thousand miles. How's the bike handles on its stock tires is pretty important.

@@thedriver8174 I can understand that if you ride all the time. I just know that a lot of people don't really put that many miles in their bike and some the original set of tires might be the only set of tires they ever experience. No matter what it'll certainly be the first set of tires they experience.

@@DoRC I understand what you are saying and it is true that some people ride very little and the original tires will be the first and long lasting impression they have of the bike. But when you are comparing the abilities of the bikes it is important that the focus is on the bikes and not the tires. Therefor having the same tires on all the bikes levels the playing field and keeps the focus on the bikes.

One thing they failed to touch on: Moto Guzzi is well known for building bikes that last. To my knowledge, the v85tt is the only dual sport with a shaft drive. I love a shaft driven bike. They just last forever with little to no maintenance. That guzzi engine is bullet proof and battle tested. There’s a reason it’s been essentially the same for a hundred years. Air cooled engine, longitudinal crank, very little plastic... It’s just a gem of a motorcycle. And it’s Italian.

Should have called it Adventure bikes for rich guys (or guys in hock up to their eyebrows). I had a BMW 800 and the maintenance cost were astronomical. I ride a lot of miles so it added up quickly. Sold the BMW and got a CB500X; I can ride it on everything you guys did in the video and not cringe at the thought of the next maintenance visit. It has enough power for the street and trail but doesn't need any electronics to tame it. It also weighs significantly less that any of the bikes you tested and feels light and nimble in all riding conditions. As an added bonus I no longer feel the need to race everyone because I know at the start that I'd loose, so it keeps me safer.

I have an all black Tenere 700 and I love it. You all did a good job breaking them down to each feature and definitely agree with everyone about using the same tires. Forgot to mention the fully adjustable suspension on the Yamaha and the removable rubber on the pegs. Well done tho. I watched the whole thing.

The Moto Guzzi comes with luggage for the price listed. Also a few other items like taller windshield for the price. So, it is ready to tour. You still have to spend money on top of the price of the Triumph or BMW to tour. For 2021 the Moto Guzzi also now comes with tubeless spoked rims. Personally I would choose the Moto Guzzi, but am still enjoying my Himalayan for off-road exploring.

It's a testament to how competent the bike is vs bikes that are far more expensive than it. A BMW K1600 or Goldwing for instance, would be a fantastic touring bike to ride across country, but that Triumph could do it with almost the same comfort and ease, for a lot less.
@zeedustrakok
@zeedustrakok 3 жыл бұрын
@@monunyabidness5949 I really doubt they offer the same comfort. I know my R1250GSA is more comfortable than a triumph 900 and the K1600 is more comfortable than my GSA. No experience on the Goldwing. but the goldwing nor the K1600 will be twice as comfortable than the Tiger 900. Diminishing results. For some the engine ain't that important, but quality and comfort can be. When I switched from a 800 to 1200 GS I noticed that the size of the engine is only a small part of the extra price, the quality of parts and the comfort are more important to me than the aditional power.

It depends what you want to use it for. So, in my humble opinion: on road: 1.) Triumph, 2.)Moto Guzzi 3.)BMW 4.) KTM & Tenere off-road: 1.) Tenere, 2.) KTM, 3.) Triumph, 4.) BMW, 5.) Moto Guzzi Combined for the average Touring type as I am , incl. perhaps 10% off road: clearly the Triumph, with the beautiful Moto Guzzi as 2nd. (And that humble opinion comes from a German! Yes we could argue that we don’t have enough data on some of them BUT some of them have some history, with consuming some oils, electronics defects etc... and in the middle of nowhere I would choose what could also be the most reliable bike.

Great test especially in an even playing field with the same tires. But Honda is missing in the middle class, since I don't consider the NC-X and the CB-X real Adventure bikes. Honda has been hinting at a new Transalp for us. Now in the Adventure bike series the only class to really let you play a lot in the dirt is the middle class. The advantage is clear... less weight... and more adventure for your buck... and Kawasaki knows it too, throwing a next Gen Kawasaki KLR 650 in the mix for 2022... the Tenere is my favorite here... followed by the Triumph and the KTM... the question is really coming in next year's shootout... please with the KLR and maybe a Honda too...

I dont want a bike whose engine is measured and designed in specs, I want an engine measured in riding pleasure and personality. The other thing that I noticed about the Guzzi is build quality and finish. The BMW and the KTM are not as good. If you a bike that is going to last. The Guzzi is your machine.

Part of the test reminds me of a situation I've had some time ago. We went touring with touring with a few guys for 10 days in the mountains. All bikes were adventure touring, one was a smaller Yamaha Tenere and the rest were bigger bikes like the super tenere 1200, africa twin 1000, BMW R1200 GSA,... Loaded up with gear the smaller yamaha really had to work hard to follow the rest of the group, it managed to do so, but it fuel consumption was double that of the 1200GSA. So with all bikes you can follow a group if they don't egagerate and you have some skills. Personally in this group I'd go for the Triumph, but IRL I prefer to stick with my R1250 GSA.

Spending + $13K for an ADV bike to primarily thrash off-road makes zero sense to me. Can buy a used, bullet proof Super Tenere for $8K and still have money left for another bullet proof bike like a DR650 to serve off-road desires. Plus, you won’t be stressed looking for a dealer should you need support - which you likely won’t. These mid-weight ADV machines have now entered Rolex rider territory. Gee, let’s take out my 890 on the trail today and bust it up a bit?! Pass. That stated, if owning a single bike was the only option, I’d say the T7 would tick all boxes minus one (which I’ve yet to see any reviews on): Pillion comfort. Assuming many of us have a significant other, and wanting to share the pleasures of exploration via 2 up, passenger comfort is paramount. Btw, I own a Guzzi and a Super Tenere, and if not for those bikes, I’d possibly opt for that beautiful V85TT (my friend got one after he experienced how awesome that transverse V-Twin on my ‘93 1000S felt) instead. Pillion comfort according to my pal, is spot on. I really believe the Guzzi is the best value of the bunch (luggage included) if you have a partner who partakes in excursions and you don’t wanna spend +$13K on a machine. People will stare at you on it, too (let’s face it, we all enjoy that!). One of the reasons I sought my 1000S out across the country in ‘96 was because it looked like a classic machine that would age well (there’s nowhere I go where people don’t say how beautiful it is). The V85TT has that look and feel about it as well; it should age like a fine wine.

If you are wondering where Honda is for this class of bike, they are all in on selling bikes without clutches, and seeing so few people learning how to use a Manual transmission these days, the Honda X-ADV 750 might do better here than its looks imply.

The T7 and welded subframe is garbage, I've already read on the forums where people drop the bike and the muffler bracket digs into the swingarm and bends the subframe since the subframe is welded onto the bike was totaled. I would spend the extra $10 on 4 bolts and have a removable subframe, I was honestly considering the T7 until I started reading the owner's forums why would you weld on a subframe to a bike that is designed to go offroad and weight over 400lbs?

I’m with the old guy. Give me some heated grips! Maybe a heated seat. Nothing sucks quite like not feeling your fingers. Never mind your riding a motorcycle.

Maybe John Burns should start reviewing Cadillacs. They have pretty fancy cruise control.

Thanks for the varied insights on these bikes. At 39:40, T7 is 72hp @ , 9,000, not 64. I think 64hp is the euro version?

Really cool reviews, I like the different takes. It would be nice to get at least heights of riders to get a sense of size.

Great debate. My bike history road and dual. When I had to combine (which is what ADV is about for me) I went XChallenge. For the next addition to the stable I'll test T7, KTM 790, Husqy 701 LR and for odd ball a desert sled.

Dear manufacturers! Please bring us a new Japanese 450-500 adventure bike: Single, liquid cooled, injection, 21 inch front, tubeless?, spoked wheels, LIGHT, low center of gravety, long service intervals, cruise control, simple to service and with decent wind protection designed for full size (western) riders! No topcase, no driveshaft, no cast alloy, no extra front lights, no rack, no tablet screen, no 30 litre tank, no nonsense, no 80+ horses. Oh, and don´t forget to add lightness. When you think you are done, shave off a few kilos, please. Anything above 165 kg excl. fuel is too heavy. Until you succeed I see no reason to swap my 20 year old adventure bike.
