We last performed this public service in 2017, when your Yamaha FZ-07 prevailed over the Kawasaki Z650, Suzuki SV650, the new Harley Street Rod, and the new and indeterminate Benelli TnT 600, in that order. The FZ-07 has since morphed into the MT-07 amidst a host of well thought-out upgrades in 2018, and then again for 2021. The Z650 got a modern instrument pod in 2020 with a few other tasteful refinements, and the SV650 hasn’t changed a bit (God bless it). The Benelli is still around but didn’t get the call this time, and the H-D Street Rod has been withdrawn from the market under a hail of ridicule. Sad.
Luckily for us all, two brand-new motorcycles have dropped into our laps for 2021 to challenge the status quo: the Aprilia Tuono 660 and the Triumph Trident. I mean three. Let’s not forget the easily forgettable Honda CB650R.
Why is this happening?
From Ryan Adams’ MT-07 review in 2018: “According to Yamaha, the Hypernaked category, which in these statistics include all manufacturers, is up by a staggering 260% since 2012. As supersport sales have decreased, we see these more versatile machines rise in popularity.”
At the launch of this year’s MT, Troy learned Yamaha has sold more than 25,000 FZ/MT-07s to owners spanning age groups from 25 to 55, with most buyers in their early 30s, but only by a few percentage points.
As the rich get richer and demand ever-more sophisticated superbikes and ADV machines but fewer of them, the time is again ripe for great motorcycles in the $8,000 range for the rest of us peasants - UJMs that no longer necessarily come from Japan. And the suddenly fierce competition in this class has happily gotten us to the current situation, where there are absolutely no stinkers left in the group.

Thanks for pointing out that the Kawasaki may be the best fit for shorter riders while the Honda may be the best for taller ones. It is appreciated by those of us on both ends of the height spectrum! Of course, very tall riders can always change class to adventure bikes, if they are too cramped on these nakeds. Sometimes finding a motorcycle that "fits just right" is more important than squeaking out the last bit of performance.

@@RedRa7Vg3r it would definitely smooth it out but a flash would give it a little more on top and in the mid range along with the pipe and pair valve delete. My advice, if a flash tune is available for your bike just get the tune. It’ll run better, it’ll have more benefits than the pc like changing thermometer temp or removing low gear power limiters, and it’ll make more power than the PC. Some new bikes can just electronically delete the pair valve and servo so you don’t even need block off plates or relays. Also the ecu is going to be as easy or easier to remove than a power commander will be to install. On top of all that, some of the power commander maps are suspect. Where as a good flash tune for your bike has been thoroughly developed. I’ll never buy another power commander if I have a choice.

It's so frustrating that the SV650 just needs minor updates to be amazing, but Suzuki just refuses to make them. It's without question my favorite engine of the bunch, and if they wanted to they could produce a version with more refined suspension than the MT-07 and basically take the fight to Yamaha with the MT-07's biggest flaw, but Suzuki is extremely dedicated to resting on their laurels. Only the Hayabusa has gotten any interesting attention from the company lately. I'm starting to think I feel the same way about Suzuki as I do Harley Davidson. I really like the bikes, I just think the board of directors has their heads so far up their own asses that they're dooming the brand through inaction

KTM are missing out, not having a bike in this range. i have an sv650, and i absolutely love it. i just bought a z900, and i absolutely love it too. the sv has that "doesn't care how fast you're going" quality. until around 100 or so, where it kind of starts to peter out. but it's perfectly happy going fast or slow. the z900 on the other hand wants to go fast all the time. don't get me wrong, it's smooth and rock solid going slow, but that engine is a damn demon. for me anyway, coming from an sv. the z has nearly twice as much power. you have to have a lot of self control to not just whip through traffic at all times. it's always whispering in your ear how easy it would be to go twice as fast as everyone else. and it's smooth as silk all the way to 150. but anyway, i bought my sv brand new in 2018. it's got about 70k miles on it, and it's still ten tons of fun. no exaggeration... if it had another couple ticks on the tach, i could be happy with it forever, but i wanted more so i got the z900. and good god does it have more. i feel like maybe i'll eventually get that triumph just to have something that's not begging me with every fiber of its being to go 120+ all the time.

The Aprilia doesn’t really make that much sense to me. The price throws it right in with the likes of the MT-09, Street Triple, Duke 890, Z900, the new Monster etc., but it doesn’t have the power to compete with them. And then there’s the electronics which, although nice, seems a bit over the top for a bike with sub 100 hp and probably makes the bike more expensive than it needs to be.
@Stratocasterhead51
@Stratocasterhead51 3 жыл бұрын
Aprilia priced themselves outside of their category. They should have cut the electronics out and slashed 2k off the bikes price. It would still be at the high end of the 650 class, but it would actually compete price wise. What these reviewers dont seem to understand is that a customer will look at price above all else. You cant realistically compare the 660 with the other 650 class bikes when it costs more than a zx6r…

Good comparison. But I am not a mainstream rider. I'm pushing 70 and don't ride aggressively in the twisties anymore (I like a nice relaxed ride). I am 5'-10" but seem to be getting shorter every year. I don't need the most power but I appreciate torque. I don't care what my bike sounds like. So it's the Kawasaki Z650 for me. Love the slipper clutch and the large TFT display. My second bike would be a Triumph T100.

Rode a 2017 FZ-07 on The Big Island. Too much fun and that engine! I would pay the MT-07 SP price. Rather have it than a MT-09 SP. Or new R7 chassis/suspension updates on a naked. If I were going to spend the $$ on Aprillia I'd get a KTM/890/R or a MT-09/SP. Triumph sounds great but not into its look and I despise those floating back fenders. Hard to disagree with these pros. My favorite review, recently.

Thanks for your comment. We chose to define middleweight bikes by their displacement, like most people do, so it fits just fine. That said, the Tuono is neither fish nor fowl when it comes to categorizing it

@@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist People who shop for bikes look at price more than displacement. If a tuono 660 is similar in cost to a z900, a ktm890 or a mt09 then thats what you should compare it with. Aprilia decided to go full yolo when it comes to electronics and priced the bike OUTSIDE of its category. Let them live with their mistake and compare it to what its price dictates it be compared to.

Define "character" For me triumph triples are silky smooth and feel like I4 if not the sound of triples. V4's from Aprilia and Ducati have much more "pazazz" and "character" IMO.

Great to see a review of the 650 class, I was surprised that you put the Trident first as I would consider it to be the least practical bike in the test. If you are using the bike for commuting, where do you carry your lock ? No where to put a bit of luggage for a weekend away, I don't think you can fit a top box. The Honda would be my personal favourite but I'd have the Aprilia if I could afford it.

Another fun review with the web article well worth a read, thanks guys. Where I come from the Tuono costs 46% more than the MT and 38% more than the Trident. It's 10% more than a Z900 and MT09SP and same price as the new Ducati Monster for goodness sake! So it is disqualified for having a silly price tag for a 660. Pure ego buy. That makes the Trident first, MT07 second and Z650 third. Except the Honda really beats the Z. Better quality all around, better handling than the MT, usable in power in the city and isn't ringing the neck of a small bike out of corners half the fun of riding canons? Surely if you are pushing on you want the gears down and engine revving?? The missing bike is the now aging GSX S750. Same price as Triumph, only 90 more cc, but just on 100bhp and more torque than the lot at 54f tlbs with 45 available just under 5000 rpm. Better suspension and brakes than the MT07. And in my country one coffee less than the Trident. Just saying.

I also agree with mr. who said that the yamaha mercia 0 2-place, because the aprilia is undoubtedly the best motop in general, but also much more expensive, alias of all these I think the mt 07 is even the cheapest, sometimes the simplest aspect, ( cheaper) does not always mean that it is not good or that it will last a short time,.. , and in this case the mt 07 has already shown its reliability, and curiously its weakest point, is the appearance of rust in some places, logicop that also depends on how the bike is estimated, but it has a tendency to rust, in short it is a good bike, simple and cheap or reasonably cheap,.. its engine,.. is well differentiated from all the others as it shows and well the map of power , force ,.. which up to 7500/8000 rpm ,.. is one of the most vigorous in delivery ,.. in addition it is also very easy to maneuver and explore ,..however, all these bikes are good ni vel, all with good quality,.. and aprilia is by far the most premium,.. but it also has another price, which you could buy a mt 09 ,.. makes you think ,.. or maybe not ,..kkkkk ,.. I was going right from mt 09 ,.., and I even like the Italian brand, but, a lot of money,.., however I even believe it's worth it, but with the same money, I went up in category and changed my mt 07 2020 , by the new mt 09 ....
