Merry Christmas to me. Zack is riding my bike on DR!! First Guzzi in my garage. Owned it 14 months, 20k miles, a few 1,000 mile days (Florida to Colorado and back), a track day, some light dirt. Riding back out West again this summer. Been happy with it. Only problem was an O2 sensor replaced under warranty with no questions asked. I’ve been pretty happy with it so I must be geriatric or just charming and unique.

Things I dont need in a bike. 200 mph speeds. 190 horse power. Enough expensive technology to run a space station. Riding with my knees wrapped around my ears. A small seat that needs to be surgically removed from your butt after a few hours. Things I do want. A bike that is easy to work on. A bike that is comfortable. A bike that wont bankrupt you to buy and maintain. A bike that is reliable. A bike that gets halfway decent mileage. I think I like this bike.

I am not sure if you can call Guzzi reliable. My friend bought it and had 2 engine replacements at 10k km and 20k km due to oil consumption. I believe he had one of the first models that came out in 2018 so maybe some production fault with the first models coming off the production line. Maybe now they have a better assembly or smth.

I have a 2020 Travel. About 7500 miles old now. My first MG product. Honeymoon period being longer over, I gotta say I am still over the moon about it. It’s a great balance between new and old, has just enough power to keep it interesting and easy to ride. Outside of small build quality issues, one of the crappy OEM aux lights dying on me, it’s been a super reliable machine and has always got me home. My biggest gripe is, as a person who performs all basic services myself, I wish it didn’t require a dealer visit to reset service light. While it’s not my only bike in the garage, the V85TT has been the bike I ride the most.

I have the Travel edition and I love the unique character of the engine, the precise braking, plush suspension and the looks of the bike. I think it’s a peach of a motorcycle! I have to differ with the reviewer as far as his statement that the bike carries its weight high up. In the opposite - I feel that it has such good low speed handling because it carries its weight low and I also find it is supremely balanced. Granted, I am not the type of rider that flogs the engine but enjoys the type of riding the engine encourages. For me, it has plenty of “zip”. As far as the twisties go I think it is a blast to do on the Gooz and I find it to be a rather lively ride on those types or roads. My other bike is the Super Tenere which is profoundly different in how that bike likes to be ridden and I love the difference in character between the Yamaha and the Gooz. Chris

@@oldtimer3824 Hello! I do the “big trips” across the country on my S 10 because it is super reliable and I know that I will be able to find a dealership almost anywhere in case I need an oil change during the course of a trip which happens quite frequently. Would I like to take the Gooz on trips across the USA? Definitely but I would worry about dealer support in case I need it. So, with my MG I generally ride the shorter, 2-3 day trips.

Guzzi offers a 1" taller and also 1" lower seat, very reasonable cost, includes gel insert. Also, one man's "antiquated" is another man's "timeless design". Guzzi does not make changes that are not major improvements. Their basic design is sound enough they don't change it much.

What a polite, tall machine. They have the “Centennial Edition” up here, with additional, commemorative livery. People buy it in numbers, as a sort of investment, or hedge, or… simply to drive an Italian one in style. I’m considering this bike, as I am 6’1” and drove similarly composed Aprilia Pegaso for 4 yrs. Served me well…

I test rode one of these back in ‘19 and really liked it. It’s a good sized bike (not huge, not small) with good character. It’s weight is fine with me. I like that it’s happy plonking along at sedated speeds and doesn’t really egg you on to ride like a nut but it’s willing to play if you want it to. It’s a bike that I feel like perfect balances highway use and running around tiny New England backroads. I’m disappointed Zach didn’t like the bike more. One major dislike I had was very odd play in the throttle response. Once underway, if you let off the throttle and got back on it, it had a dead spot that you had to twist past until the engine would respond. Not at all like a cable operated bike. I see very few people ever mention this, so I wonder if it’s a fault. I mentioned it to the people running the demo, but they kind of shrugged it off. That’s the only thing holding me back from jumping on this bike.

ZC thanks so much for bringing the V85 TT one on DR... Surely, everyone is entitled to a bad day at work... the *negativity was palpable* in this episode. 'Can understand trying to squeeze one last review of a bike that doesn't have whiz bang shizz was probably a mood kill. Especially after a long year. Amazing outcomes on the DR leader board. This one would have ranked maybe a bit higher if it was reviewed in July. ADV Pulse did a great review on the off road and on road capabilities. Convinced me to visit the showroom!

Sooo it's got hard boxes, a decent windscreen, upright ergonomics, suite of safety features and modern trip info data, a huge gas tank and great mpg, soft suspension for crap pavement, the right size rubber, shaft drive, cruise control, heated grips...but it only placed mid pack in the daily rider list?? I mean this thing IS a Daily Rider kind of bike even though it's not necessarily modern or fast. Zack seems to have lost sight of the Daily Rider parameters that originally placed the Versys650 at the top of the heap, as this bike should have placed much higher up the list of bikes, at least above any naked bike as a "daily rider". An argument could easily be made for the reliability uncertainty, or lack of service and parts options being a knock against daily practicality, but that wasn't mentioned as a downside in the video so shouldn't be a factor for the bikes place on the list.

IF you do any of your own maintenance, the Goose is much easier come valve adjustment time! No shims and easy access. The lack of chain maintenance won me over also. I couldn't wait for Zach to do a Daily Rider on it so I already bought this model. The weight is not MG's claimed but probably the Daily Rider wet weight. You can tell the difference after you fill the tank. You also have adjustable rebound and preload on the front and back suspension. And I think your bike may have been thrashed a bit; was it a demo or press bike? You seem to dislike the modern choices made but then sound disappointed with the old school character of the bike. The wider torque band makes it much more usable for me than a bike where all the power is at >9K RPM. It is also easier to flat foot than the KLR, and the dealer I bought from will let you take a ride on one to see if you like it. That is not the case with most dealers these days.

I am satisfied doing 10-14 day Euro bike tour once a year (did 16 yearly tours in a row) and it gets the riding bug out of my system for a year . Low expectations guide the review. Had he an opportunity to wring it out a bit, it would have surprised him. I've run it hard in the twisties and it is always confidence inspiring and have taken it on some of the gnarliest jeep trails in the Northeast and it did surprisingly well. The limitation was me on those trails. It does find its limits though. Not nearly as fast as my Aprilia, nor does it have the same pull of my 2004 V11 Sport, and it won't conquer ennduro trials, but it will go where the GS1250 goes.

I really dig this bike. When I was bike shopping last year this one really had me. But... Then I read the forums. And it reminded me of reading forums from the early 2000's when I had my Buell. "Character", "Fun", "Easy to work on" all mixed in with "Just this little leak" and "found another loose bolt" and "waiting on this part that failed". My Buell was a pile of shit. No level of "character" or "fun" made up for the fact that I was constantly chasing issues. At the time I had a garage and time to work on it, but got fed up and replaced it with a Honda that NEVER had a problem. I don't want a bike with character, I want a bike that works and is boring. Anyway, bought an early 2000's GSXR 1000 for dirt cheap, added luggage and problem solved.

"Geriatric & Relaxed ...Gentle... Antiquated... Asking grandpa to sprint (had me rolling)". I remember reading a Car and Driver anniversary issue, many years ago, where the subject of "killing it with faint praise" was discussed by some former editors... They brought up a Porsche 912 sportmatic (flat 4, automatic) review that the lead photo was in front of a nursing home! Porsche did not get the reference, and the press cars and ad money kept rolling in! Well done Mr. Courts! That said, the V85TT is probably a very nice example of the type (air/oil cooled twin), with tech upgrades. Personally, I'd prefer some nice classic gauges instead of the TFT & tech. Comparing it to current modern bikes in the ADV segment doesn't make sense. This is like an ADV bike with a Sportster motor.

A lot of that clutch feel that you expounded on comes from the fact that it's a dry clutch. And it works from the rear of the engine instead of the side like all other bikes. And when I get off my Versys X 300 with the hydraulic assist slipper clutch and climb onto my MG, it pulls really hard until I get used to it again. I'm sure it would be a lot more difficult to make this a hydraulic assist slipper clutch than the multi-disk wet clutches on other bikes.

Today at EICMA (very important bike show, I believe it's the world's leading), amongst many fantastic bikes and together the (beautiful) V100 and the new Stelvio, I've seen the 3 new versions for 2023-24 (80hp, 90% of torque available at 3000rpm and hard work by Guzzi on the cardan transmission): there is the "classical" V85 TT, the V85 Travel and then a "new" version called V85 Strada, which as the name suggests (strada in Italian means road/street) it's definitely more urban, with light rims and other solutions that make it much more street-oriented than the TT and the Travel. The Piaggio Group has finally taken the right direction with Moto Guzzi, the bikes range begins to be complete and competitive, the next step would be to make a 100-110hp V9 (with the new engine from the V100/Stelvio) to complement the V7 (who sales well but many don't buy because they would like some power more than 65hp). It would be also great to see a new California for the American market, I know it's not a popular brand in the US but trust me, it would be great to see some Guzzi (especially California) on American roads. 🍺

I traded thumbs up with a guy on the Triumph 1200 Scrambler in the two tone green. Another bike with character. The issue with no local dealership almost made me take a pass on mine. It only had 6k miles. I bought it gently used from a former Guzzi dealer that also sells BMW, Yamaha and Huskies. They had just done the 6k service but were unable to reset the service light as Guzzi made them ship the service gear back to them when they dropped selling the Guzzis. I have read, but not verified, that the MIA Bluetooth device that allows connectivity with your smart phone has an option to reset the maintenance light. I would have one by now but with the pandemic supply\manufacturing issues no one has any for sale atm.

No one seems to have noticed that Zack only used the Road mode. Throttle response in road mode is similar to what some models refer to as Urban. Initial reaction is down by about 20% versus Sport. Sport is also more linear across the rev range. There’s no significant reason to ever use Road in my experience.

A Midsized adventure bike with shaft drive. That in itself is pretty appealing. You need to buy BMW 1200gs to get those features otherwise....

Regarding knees touching the cylinders, high is not that relevant. I'm 186cm and in off-road I might touch the left cylinder (it's a bit closer back to the rider) if I sit quite forward. However, my cousin that is around 193cm didn't find any issue, cause his knees are in a taller position (longer legs) and he is sitting further back (longer arms). So, it probably has more to do with proportions and preferred position.

I am 180 cm / 6 ", well the left knee scratches the top cover, with the" rainproof "KLIM Badland. Depending on the knee pads, not disturbing to me. Lovely bike to ride, fantastic on gravel. However, as you say, the driving modes are just ridiculous, ABS is enough! EDIT: No, it's not a big bike, small and nibel, light and heavenly easy to maneuver.

Good review... looks like a comfortable "laid back bike" which is what Moto Guzzi does well. Good looking (which they also do well) though I'm not a fan of using the start button for anything other than starting the bike (and the little tiny lcd with the really big bezel) isn't great. I think they'd have been better off staying old school analog with the dash IMO.

Zack, I love the daily rider videos and have watched many because you touch on the things that interest me in a bike. I was particularly interested in the 650 and 1000 versys, I live in Utah were the dealers do not like individuals to take test drives so I have gone to you on the daily rider to get valuable insight with your reviews. . My take on your Versys 1000 review is that it is a good bike but not particularly exciting. so I have been hoping that you would consider reviewing a KAWASAKI NIJA1000 SX, I think the seat height is slightly lower, the engine more exciting and I would loose out on two up comfort (no top box)and more protection for longer rides, however I hope you do a review on this bike to help me make a good choice on what I think could be the bike for me.

I see you have the BMW 1250GS as your number one bike. I have always considered one of these but got scared off by the maintenance. When you pick a bike, would you personally pick one of these or are you just saying its a better bike? Do you consider all aspects of owning or just the bike itself

I rode one roughly a year ago, was not impressed. It definitely has the style and the comfort but man the performance is just not there, and I'm not even talking about raw horses. 80 is plenty to have fun but the power delivery is indeed geriatric but rev happy, which is the opposite of what I was expecting.

The V85 tt has a lot of fun on twisty roads. There, you can understand that it's extremely good balanced. This test ride was done while raining most of the time, on wet and straight asphalt roads. What kind of feedback do you hope that you'll take from this bike under these unsuitable driving conditions? Happy holidays and happy new year!
