Pony Club requires both feet out of the stirrups before dismounting, for safety reasons. It's actually really easy once you are used to it, and I always do it this way. Pony Club doesn't do everything "right" but this is one rule that I really like!

One of my Spotted Saddle Horse mares will walk right up to the mounting block and park next to me, but only of she is bareback and no halter. Once she is bridled and saddled she will not stand next to it. She dont want to be mounted. I cant ride bareback because of my psiatica acting up, so she knows that she just gets loved on and brushed if she isnt saddled. I tried the loved on and brushed only, a few times when she was saddled but she wont fall for it.

This is awesome information but I would add to have a friend by the horse as well. I’ve recently had hip replacement surgery and I use your method.

My horse was good with some heavier beginner kids the other day, with the help of a spotter to help them dismount, but I want to get that process better. If you want to show some ideas for safer mounting with therapy and riding teachers, like how do you instruct your helpers to position themselves the most safely and effectively? that would be great or someone can point me in that direction.

Lol I remember the first time I rode in a saddle and got off my foot got stuck in the stirrup and I twisted and landed on the ground. I was lucky the lesson horse was well trained.

That clip you showed is exactly how dismount!!! I have joint problem and it's what's most comfortable for me, but thought I was doing it "wrong"!!! So glad to hear it's not harmful!

Me too. I started riding English, and learned to always clear both stirrups before dismounting (I slide down). When I switched to Western, I was told to leave my left foot in the stirrup, which made me extremely nervous. I went back to what I thought was safer. Glad Ivy endorsed it :)

Oo I didn't know my students can dismount onto a good mounting block. I made a small zigurrat pyramid out of solid concrete blocks.

If your saddle has a horn, be careful sliding down-it’s very easy to get hung up with your shirt on the horn and you’ll be dangling. If you can’t get on and off smoothly, I’d recommend someone holding your horse.

Yes and also if you have a utility horse and you've got tools like clippers hanging off the back. Thankfully I'm still here to talk about it because my horse was pretty good. And I bought a Saw and Clipper holster. But I put arrows in it and now that is even worse for getting snagged...
