What Car?

4 жыл бұрын

When the Nissan e-NV200 was first introduced in 2014, it was seen as just a Nissan Leaf with a van body, but in reality, it's so much more. The new e-NV200 has been upgraded with a 40kWh battery that has boosted its official range to 174 miles, or in excess of 100 miles in real-world conditions; but is it any good? Edd China is your guide.

Just a small niggle: the on-board 6,6 kw AC charger would charge roughly 3,3 kwh's in 30 minutes. The advertised 80 % charge in 30 minutes is, I assume, done using a chademo (50 kw) DC fast charger, which bypasses cars on-board charger altogether, and thereby allows for faster DC charging.

@ronclark9724

As Ed noted for small mileage delivery. When you are delivering all over a large metro area such as London this vehicle won't do two round trips from Heathrow to Stansted, 216 miles. This distance is not long for metro deliveries, or for that matter taxi cab journeys during a day's work...

Range is still way too short to be of much use. I drive anywhere from 100 to 400 miles a day just in my local area. I want to have more range than I would ever actually use just so I have a safety net. If they ever approach a 600 mile range then I might start considering an e-vehicle for my work use. The other problem is that Nissan tends to use cheap batteries that don't handle daily charge/discharge cycles very well in the long term.
@Poxenium
@Poxenium 4 жыл бұрын
The on-board charger has nothing to do with DC quick charging. The on-board 6.6kW AC charger can charge the battery to 80% in about ~5 hours, while DC fast charging bypasses the on-board charger and DC current charges the battery pack directly.

I own a 24KWh older model. drive is good, I get 50-60 miles with my load & a set of roof bars on, but I dont drive crazy. If you do, the range will plumet like a stone. Running costs for me averaging 3.5p per mile (home electricity is 14pKWh) which could be much less with much cheaper tarrifs out here. First 1000miles cost £43 including a few rapid charges (service stations). The desil it replaced was averaging 13.5p per mile. I typically drive no more than 40 miles a day, so range has been fine. I live in a hilly area, goes up & down the hils nicely. Cold weather (below 7Deg) has quite an impact, not just heating, but the battery limits regeneration (gradualy) untill its upto full temperature, which looses a few more miles from lack of regen. I suspect this is less of a problem with the 40Kwh model, as its bigger! If you were to buy one (2019+), I would suggest the Accenta, with the Cold pack. You can preheat the van before you set off. This can save me 30-45minutes a day here from clearing the wind screen etc. The Tekna has a fancy entertainment centre, with a couple of handy functions that I do like, but as a satnav & stereo to use its awfull. I use my ipad as a navigator when needed, much easier. Speeds upto 45mph range works well for me, but start pushing 55+ and it drops rapidly, particularly with a little head wind. A reliable 100miles loaded should be possible with the 40Kwh without any stress. Check out the SpeakEV forums if you want to learn more, it helped me when I was thinking of getting one.

Great to read. Especially the huge savings on 'fuel'. It would be a lot more expensive, but I'd love Tesla to do a van. Though maybe Mercedes could do an electric sprinter van? If they don't already!?
@Wookey.
@Wookey. 4 жыл бұрын
@@user-jt1jv8vl9r Renault do an electric Master (but it's very expensive!) and VW do an eCrafter, but not in the UK SFAIK. There is also the e-Kangoo which is way better value than the Master, but quite a small van. e-Berlingo is coming soon. They all have feeble ranges which is fine from some uses, but not what I do. Chanje in the US make a 150mile van which is best so far (and it's huge, them being Americans). There is a Mercedes e-vito now and an e-sprinter which should be available this year (2020). There will be an electric Transit in 2021, and probably an e-transporter too, and the VW ID Buzz in 2022. Arrival is a startup making (weird-looking) vans in the UK. Claims 150 miles and UPS have ordered thousands, but not sure when it will be possible to buy one. And finally at some point we will probably get the Rivian (Amazon) van, but who knows when. Could be years. Hmm. Looks like there will be the MAN eTGE available in June 2020 too. Seems like electric vans are really happening starting about 2020. But everyone is aiming at the short-range delivery market so far.
@richardwheatcroft6065
@richardwheatcroft6065 4 жыл бұрын
Mini Update, I rcently got close to the maximum load capacity. It drove well, and around town at 30mph it wasnt denting the range too much with the regen set to maximum. 50mph gentle uphill though, and you notice the extra power needed & hence range drop. Even if heavily loaded around town this will do the job nicely. Ride was still good on the whole, but noticed the bumpstops with big dips in the road etc.

@fermitupoupon1754 4 жыл бұрын
@@rww805 you do realise that for example in french the word for car is feminine, right? So when someone translates from French to English it's not that odd for them to just gender the words as they are used to. In my native language some words can be either feminine or masculine, depending on context, and it can really make a difference. For example 'the government' when referring to the abstract concept is feminine, but when referring to a specific body like the city council or the premier and cabinet it becomes masculine.

Canadian NV200 owner here 🍁. I use my Nissan mini cargo van for work and make about 6 to 10 appointments per day with an average distance of 100 to 160 kms total. The weight of the ladder racks, ladders, equipment, tools, and stock bring the carrying load close to 600 kgs not to mention the wind resistance from the ladders and ladder racks. I'll be shopping around for replacement to my van in about 2-3 years and I hope Nissan continues to evolve this E Van with greater range and batteries that perform better under cold temperatures (-20 C and lower) because they may just have me as a repeat customer.

Ironically everyone thinks of electric vehicles as new whereas they actually preceded internal combustion engines in the infancy of road car history. If they had kept at it and put as much money and research into electric engines from the early days as they did into internal combustion engines things would have turned out differently.

So the e-nv200 has a dual battery system - the drive batteries under the van, and a traditional 12V battery under the hood, for onboard and cab electronics and electricals, but are they connected? Does the drive battery charge the 12V battery? Like an alternator, in a petrol/diesel van? Or do you have to charge it at an EV station?

@GeeKIller Confusing, I know, but he is right. The onboard 7kW charger is used if you plug it into 240V mains. But if you plug it into a DC rapid charger then it'll charge at (up to) 50kW (directly, using DC). What he really means it that the onboard charger 'allows' itself to be bypassed for DC charging. And yeah he _really_ shouldn't be making the classic kW/kWh slip. I'm pretty sure Edd knows better really.

Noticed when I charge the battery it used to be 155 miles but now it only charges to 130/40 miles . You can charge it anywhere like they say as someone is either using it or it's out of order . So your in panic mode when u drive on a motorway , when it is freezing and u have no choice but to put on the heating ... They could improve this especially in the 21st century . Hopefully a total redesign of the 2014-2019 model which was a total afterthought and had terrible weight distribution and bad traction, no preheat, no heated seats and you could not heat while charging.

You mentioned a range of 100 miles. Our Zoe has a range of about 120 in winter and 170 in summer, so a big difference; I wonder what the range range for the e-NV200 is. It's 40kWh compared to 44 for the Zoe, as well as being a bigger vehicle, so not surprising it's less. We would swap the Zoe for the camper version of this if it had the Zoe's range.

I tried one, (one day loan) i was told the range was 174 and found 100 miles unloaded that was a average day. I was told the charge time with a normal plug was 21 hours (yes twenty one) wow and the cost is £5 to charge. It can go down to 8 hrs if you pay £500 for a super charger. The real down fall is the depreciation as they depreciate worse than any other vehicle. The price of £20000 is very far out your looking closer to £30,000 that's with the grant from government. I did agree fast good drive nippy no complaints. Would say for me the technology is getting there but not yet, there are no diesel free zones yet in Yorkshire so that was not a consideration. It's the resale value in 3 or 4 years that you have to consider or lease one.

So sad we don't get this option in the United States. In fact they're discontinuing sale of all Nissan vans this summer. Bummer.

I looked at a e-NV200. (I was waiting for a sales pirate as I couldnt see the van I'd actually gone to look at.) Im a mobile detailer and carry a water tank in the back along with the rest of the kit. My local Nissan dealer said... Dont buy one.. If my tank leaks or spills the battery under the floor would be an explosion risk. The diesel version would be a better bet for my needs at the mo.

The fully sealed and encased battery under the floor? Its not the same as a mobile phone. Its a very, very, very low risk. Its got to cope with wet roads and puddles. I would worry more about the volume of water/weight that you want to carry in any van.
