Hey MotoMan, been watching you for years, and paid attention to those financial lessons you used to talk about all the time. I got out from being upside down on a soulless crossover, put aside the cash and paid in full for a 2015 VW GTI. you are absolutely right about sport design package and a strange fact is I ordered my 992 cabrio with aventurine green metallic and porsche said you can not get the sport design package with this color but its available on all other color so that was a very hard decision for me to choose between aventurine green metalllic and sport design front

The sport design front greatly compromises lip clearance and would make the expensive front axle lift a necessity. Also it removes the auto adjusting opening of the front air intake depending on air temperature and speed etc. All in all the sport design front takes away a great deal of functionality, reduces lip clearance and forces one to option the almost $3000 front axle lift to the almost $3500 that the sport design front costs. Perhaps the worst option one can impose upon the very sublime and functional 992 design.

Agree with the sports front package as being a must. However this exposes the two radiators to road rock/bug/debris damage. I know they can be cleaned off but the grill face louvers get abused. After only 400 miles on my 992 significant wear is seen. I’m waiting for a front grill screen kit before I bring mine back on the road for play. Otherwise who can complain about a targa?

Well we know what is the next step. Wait for the Targa GTS with manual transmission. I'm always a sucker for a yellow car with black accents but I must agree that in the case of the Targa other colors might be better. I must drop by our local Porsche dealer to take a look at one, if they don't kick me out before hand.

Man what a beauty. We all know what this particular Porsche means to you but when are you going to pull the trigger on this car MM? Are you getting close? You should definitely do an episode on going through the entire process of ordering this car, specking it and then taking delivery of your dream car and new daily driver. I always thought the Targa was just a removable top like a corvette. It seems like a lot of work with the back popping up and the top folding back for just a half a convertible. I’d go with a 4s coupe with a moon roof and just the sports options and get me out of the dealership at about 130k and be just fine with that

The sensible options on the base Taycan 4 Cross Turismo - ie to make it the point of the car - doubles its price. I was going to buy one but this is the reason I didn't - even with a strong p/x on a 3yr old Boxster into the mix. I understand all the options and the pricing but it does make it all a bit unreachable - even for me, a 53yr old, with a sensible income. So I bought a Targa instead and went easy on the options list as it doesn't matter quite so much here.

Great review, very balanced. I was hoping to hear something about the buffeting compared to the convertible. I’ve never driven a Targa, but have owned the convertible, and wind management was excellent. I have read reviews in the past where they report the Targa has some quite noticable turbulence because of the targa bar. Did you find that this was very noticable? Cheers!

I have a 991.2 Cab and a 991.2 Targa (yes, I'm nuts and spoiled). More buffeting in the Cab if the rear windscreen is down but if you put it up the Targa has more buffeting.

It's about the same as in the 991.2 Targa . . . more pronounced when you drive with the windows up and roof down. Best option is roof and windows down and thus similar to a 992 Cab with the wind blocker up.

So why would you pay extra for the S model extra hp on the idea that you “need” a higher performance car for going to lunch or to Costco - and then you put in a manual transmission which is slower than the equal cost PDK transmission? They didn’t put the manual in the Targa 4 to make sure you have to spend the extra $18,000 for those buyers who think they are back in the 1970’s. In fact - the Targa 4 is the bait and switch model- in 2019 the last time they sold the targa- they only imported 14 Targa 4’s and they were harder to get an allocation than the 4s. They imported around 500 s and GTS models in that year. My preference was too call their bluff and order the Targa 4 and and spend the extra $18,000 on options. This allows one to add $30,000 of options and keep the car under $150,000 rather than rising to $170,000 plus. And a 0-60 speed of just under 4 seconds is faster than anyone needs when getting on the freeway and more than enough to scare your passenger to a fun level. And the Targa 4 will roll down the freeway at 75 miles per hour just as well as the S model. And with the 19”/20” wheels the car will ride better on those long weekend rides in your Targa with the top down. And finally if you really were after every useless additional seconds of acceleration - why in the world would you even buy the Targa- buy the S coupe for less money. The Targa is for going to a great restaurant with your wife or a hot girlfriend - on a warm summer evening. Or leaving for a Santa Barbara weekend in the cool of the morning - stop on a winding country road - drop the top and smell the trees and fresh air. That extra 2-3 seconds of 0-60 acceleration you could use will never get used with your wife in the car more than once - bad enough she had her hair blowing around - she won’t suffer being scared to death ☠️ from your adolescent acceleration games. The sweet spot for rational guys - who are never racing around tracks - is the Targa 4. How many Targa owners ever take their car on a track - ever? Maybe 10%? And if they did are even keeping track of their lap times? Nope. Just having some fun going around corners and such and the base Targa will be more than enough fun. I spent the extra money on $1900 wood interior trim and $1,000 on leather wrapped steering column and sunshades and &1600 on clear plastic taillights and both the performance package to get the chrono and all the cool stuff like cooled seats and changeable interior led lighting and all the fun safety options like adaptive cruise control and lane change protect and so on. And sport exhaust for better engine noise and 14 way seats and metallic white exterior and Bordeaux red dipped interior and so on. I also bought the least powerful Panamera back in 2016 and that car is way too fast for any rational driving to the office or to lunch - never felt I ever needed more power getting on the freeway. This is my take - and I am sticking to the belief that the right car for a regular guy who wants to have all the fun of a Targa that is fully optioned and who wants to be money wise and spend less than $150,000 on the car. As if anyone right in their mind pays $150,000 for a car to go to lunch in with your wife. Now if she isn’t your wife she will be too young to know the car 🚗 has only 379 hp - the wood trim will serve your needs much better”real wood” impresses young ladies more than slightly larger brake rotors .

From a 3.0 T to 3.0 T perspective, the 992 is better matched to the personality of the engine. I cover this in early 992 episodes from Spain. That holds up with the Targa. That said, if it were me buying a used 991 - I would do an NA manual, 991.1 Targa. Of course, with colored seat belts:)

I would really like a Targa, but I’m most worried about the wind noise in the cabin. Particularly, the booming or thumping you hear sometimes in a car with one window open. Any Targa owners experience this with theirs? It’s a bit challenging to find one to test drive.

991.2 Targa 4 GTS. No booming or thumping in 3 years; bought new. 3 main reasons why I bought it: 1. Trick, automated roof. 2. Looks. 3. Can still have conversation at freeway speeds whereas in a convertible? Good luck, even while yelling. Also, it feels too "open" a la JFK, & I feel more secure with this setup.

I just drove a 992 (base model) and I was really disappointed. It had no soul! The interior has many cheap elements. The obscured gauges are a terrible design, completely unacceptable. Getting back into my AMG GTC, I couldn’t believe how much more engaging, connected, lively, and entertaining the GTC felt.

AMG is a brute german muscle experience, while still being refined - porsche is known for their refined effortless driving experience... they really wake up when pushed to the limits because they are designed to be pushed to the limit very easily. Cant blame you for picking the AMG GTC, that is an amazing car as well.

Compared to the Carrera S this is truly a boulevard cruiser being 400 lb heavier and with a less rigid body and higher center of gravity. This fat girl is made for open top cruising in South Beach and not attacking some wonderful back roads. The Targa is an antithesis 911.

Nice Review but not mentioned that nerve-wrecking „buffering“ Wind-Noise from the Targa Roof unfortunately has NOT been eliminated since 991; even with the now manually adjustable new higher Wind-Deflector on the Windscreen-Frame! Well thats really a Pity because those Noises are maximally uncomfortable at Speeds approximately 70-90km/h which is a very common Speed-Window in driving and enjoying a Targa. Secondly in my Opionion the rear „Bumper“ also looks terrible; and its hilarious that Porsche shows their Press Cars with the Front of he (bloody expensive) „Exclusive-Manufacture“ Department due to the terrible looking stock Frontend! I loved my 991 Targa4S Gen2 and You could get one of these as 2.Hand Car with very low Mileage for 40%off New Price including the lovely analog Instrument-Cluster (and the beloved traditional Cup-holders!!) , so for me the 991 is a great Value for Money right now; besides the Cabriolet is by far the better Option if You are a „Open-roof Addict! But anyway the Targa is the most beautiful Porsche in the 992 Lineup and Design has always sold Cars ; ) Cheers from Munich

Still a fast, beautiful and competent car full of pedigree but unfortunately the 911 has become simply too much of everything: too big, too heavy, too tech-driven, too unexciting, too expensive,... If you want to get the real Porsche experience - and you should because Weissach/Zuffenhausen builds cars like few other brands - don't spend this kind of money on this compromise of an open-top GT car but instead get a nicely spec'ed, PPA Macan Turbo as your daily driver and a great-sounding, reasonably lightweight PPA 981 Boxster GTS for the weekends. The two together will probably cost less than a new 992 Targa 4S before(!) options and whichever one you drive, will be much less of a compromise. The people that are buying these 992 Targa's will probably do the same by having several cars in their driveway to choose from but their "compromising less" will be done on a much bigger budget than that of most people watching this kind of KZbin videos. Just my two cents...

Try finding a 981 Boxster GTS or S trim in a manual? I can't find any GTS and less than a handful S in the whole country. The 992 vs the 991 price delta in the used market will be interesting.

@@johnlee5307 They are (becoming) a bit of a unicorn, that's true. Have the impression that people are holding on to their 981's in general, especially the manual ones. Seems logical with the 718 4-cyl that came next and given the base price of the new 6-cyl 718 GTS. Might be the case as well for the 991.1 vs. the 991.2 and 992 generations of the 911. How about this CPO, manual, Carmine red GTS in Fresno ? finder.porsche.com/us/en_US/Boxster-GTS-198702 Custom-ordered mine in NYC when there wasn't even a manual one to be found in the whole state to test drive but it probably was the best car purchase of my life. For one third of the price of this press-car spec'ed 992 Targa 4S, you will get much, much more than one third of its driving pleasures and sensations in your 981 Boxster GTS... Good luck !
