In today's video I show you how to disable the auto lock feature of your charging plug. This is for a 2021 Toyota Rav4 Prime. I dont know if it works with the Prius Prime.

Thanks for the tip, I usually set the settings to Auto unlock , it means it stays locked until my battery is fully charged. Then it unlocks itself so that other EV driver can unplug and use it. Usually i don't keep plugged in too long until charging rate reduces to .8kwh for 30 mins until the battery is full.

Do you still recommend rav4 prime? I got a deal for a xse. Trying to decide if I should get tesla model 3 long range or rav4 prime. I just don't like stopping for electricity when out of town if I go tesla. I also don't like the way toyota has been treating you and some of the rav4 prime issues you had. If I spend that much money on a xse prime it should not have a lot of problems.

So far that is the best I am getting with the roof rack and tires. Its also still been cold though. I am thinking it will improve.

I'm not sure I understand your 2.6mi/kW question. What I can say is weather can affect mileage. When the air is colder, the air molecules are closer together. There are more molecules for the car to push out of the way as it moves when cold. Less when warm. Warmer weather improves mileage. Of course, the speed you drive matters too. The faster you drive, the more air per second you have to push out of the way. When you drive slower the air has more time to get out of the way. Faster and it has less time which means more energy needed. Rain and falling snow also have to be pushed out of the way. Wet roads take more energy too because the tire grip isn't as good. Snow is worse as the grip is worse. Ice is horrible.

I enjoy your videos. My RAV4 Prime came with the 3.3kw onboard charger although I tried to find a Prime with the premium package including the 6.6kw onboard charger. I have a 240v Chargepoint at my house, but typically need a faster charge than the 3.3kw onboard charger allows so I can get back on the road after lunch at home. Is it available to have Toyota install a 6.6kw onboard charger on my Prime? It sure would help unless the price to modify is prohibitive. I have to run on gas in the afternoon since I can only get a fraction of the needed charge during lunch. No biggie, but a faster charger sure would help.

Changing this setting on the vehicle settings menu, only lasts until the day that your 12 volt battery dies, or you take the car in for dealership service and they do a software update or something. I have tried to turn this setting off the way James shows, at least three times, and eventually the day comes when it has mysteriously re-enabled itself. So when James says "permanently", it's not really "permanently". These settings only last as long as the car has 12 volt power. As soon as that 12 volt battery goes dead, and you have to jump start the car through that terminal in the front fuse box, you're going to have to reset this charging port lock again.

I was looking for a way to lock the cable even if there is no electricity "charger on the schedule", my car is RAV4 PHEV sport, I don't have the connector lock menu, I don't want to sleep while the charging cable is not firmly secured to the car

Yes. Its a normal hybrid when you arent using the HV battery.

LOL…I just found this today by happenstance! The Auto Unlock will unlock when you approach the car…otherwise, you need to use your FOB and hit the unlock again…

Just consider that many people with PHEV's don't have home charging. They need to rely on the public charging infrastructure for charging. Why would they not just run the gas engine all the time? Because EV is more efficient in the city or slow driving. Also, free public charging is open game for everyone, IMO. PHEV or not, everyone wants free juice.

Both my Rav4 Prime and my Chevy Bolt came with a 110V charging cable. You can just plug it into a regular outlet (which works better if you have a garage or at least a car port). It takes longer to charge at 110V than at 220V but the battery in the Rav4 is small enough that overnight is usually long enough.

You don't have to sit in your car while charging. Some people charge at work. 8 hours is more than long enough to charge nearly empty Chevy Bolt at 240V/15A. Other times, someone might not need a full charge. +25 miles (in summer) for a Bolt. Go shopping. See a movie (2 hours, 50 miles). Etc.

We recently brought our Prime in for a recall repair, and when we got it home this had been reset, and the charger was locking. No problem, right? Maybe it just got reset in the menu when they did some work? Nope. Toyota has removed this option entirely. Sadly, this video is now useless and misleading. Not your fault, it's Toyota's.

Charging your Plug in Hybrid at a public charging station is not inconsiderate. That's ridiculous. Should I never use a gas pump to fill my 5 gallon gas tank for my boat? 😂. Most of the chargers I use are sponsored by my state and free. If you pay taxes, you have a right to use the charger. Period
