I once did PDI on a special order TRD pro Tundra, plus the installation of Duratrac tires and a levelling kit. The owner comes back the next day and complains about the ride quality. I was able to fix it by lowering the tire pressure from spec. He comes back a week after because there was an imperfection on some trim piece which me or my managers could not find. Just so you know even though the tacoma doesn't have a rear locker it still applies the brakes to the spinning wheels, meaning that it's the same as having lockers in this particular scenario. Obviously for rock crawling you have to spin the wheel for it to engage so it might not be ideal but it's basically like having lockers. It does this front and back and yes it's not as good as lockers but it still does the job.

E: 4-Auto is RWD until there is slip, it then >automatically< engages 4-wheel drive as long as needed 4-High is just that, 4-wheel drive, power at all wheels at all times 4-Low is lower rev-range for better power distribution to the road, i.e. you're stuck, crawling, etc.

I bought a 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab with the Premium and Technology plugs and a 6’ bed on 2/29/24. It was the dealerships loaner pickup and had only 6K miles. The dealership added running boards and a hard Tri-Fold tonneau cover. During the first week of ownership I installed a K&N cold air intake, window vents and mud flaps. The Only thing I hate is the black factory leather interior. So I contacted Katzkin and had them make me TRD Red Leather seat covers with black trim and stitching. After Katzkin removed the black leather and installed the Red Leather, I sold the black leather seat covers to a friend who owns a 23 with grey cloth interior. Now he’s happy with the Black Leather and I’m happy with the TRD Red Leather. I’ve also added some TRD RED trim pieces to the interior. Next will be a FlowMaster FlowFX “turn down exhaust system. After that I’ll drive to Bonners Ferry, Idaho to have an Overland Torque Tune downloaded into the computer so that the torque begins at 2K RPM, instead of 3,500 RPM. This will also Stop the transmission from “hunting” for the right gears. Once this is completed I’m having my White Tacoma 2 toned in Barcelona Red metallic that follows the body lines on the lower sections of the exterior body panels. I think that Bronze wheels would look great after the 2 tone is completed. When the factory tires need replacing, I’ll go with the Faulken Wildpeaks. There’s a Forest Road that goes from Malaga to Ellensburg that a few of us will drive over this summer. Ryan, what road do we take from Ellensburg to I believe North Bend? The friend that I’m selling my black leather to wants to take that road from his place to Ellensburg and then we’ll go over Blewitt pass to hit some roads up and around the ski resort, as there are some good fishing spots up there. There will be 4 of us guys who own TRDs that want to have a weekend of 4 wheeling, fishing and camping.

4H on any vehicle can be used as standard and on any road surface, that’s why is called high, motorway too when it’s raining for example,it gives you more secure handling, 4L and 4L lock is where front and rear diffs are locked and inner and outer wheels will rotate with the same speed , only should be used on gravel and mud and snow. 👍❄️🚗

Yes you can use 4H on all surfaces at any speed and 4L is for slow speeds because it reduces your final drive ratio. The diffs don’t lock in 4L. Only TRD offroad and pro come standard with locking diffs. You can lock your diffs in 4H in those models as well though.

The description of aspects of 4WD drivetrains at around 6:30 seems to be confusing features of transfer cases vs axle differentials. What you seem to have been *aiming* at describing is the differences between full time 4WD/AWD with some form of center differential and part time 4WD systems which are locked *front to back* (when in 4HI or 4LO.) But what you *ended up* describing sounded more like axle differentials (either fully locked or some type of limited slip.)

I have the 2020 TRD Sport and live in a city with serious winters. The first thing I bought as an accessory was a set of Winter tires with a 3PMSF - three-peak mountain snowflake - symbol. As a matter of fact all my previous vehicles (which were cars) had this equipment as a minimum. Taking a truck with all season tires, with an empty box, up a ridge mountain road, with a foot of snow almost nullifies the 4x4 option. If you didn't have the shovel and traction boards you would qualify for Sr. amateur status. As of now it's Jr. ranking for you.

around 7:30, you didnt quite describe 4wd correctly. when your in 2 wheel drive ( front or rear) you are only sending power to the tire with the least amount of resistance, so what happens is with an open dif the wheel with the least resistance goes back and forth depending on the situation like turning. 4wd does the same thing, just with each axle. you dont need to worry about turning while in 4wd. the owners manual says you shouldnt go faster then 50-55 in 4wd. what you were describing were locking differentials, when the differentials are locked each tire turns at the same rate, if you have a locking front or center dif, you dont want to turn while moving or you will get that lugging you mentioned.

Also, the truck has a limited slip rear axle so that is why you see both tires spinning when you are stuck. A locking rear axle would not make a difference in your case. It is a good option if one tire actually comes off the ground when rock crawling.

When you have Ice under all 4 tires pack snow in the tread of the tires.

Good demo.. I also drive a plain Jane 4X4 Tacoma and my tires are what makes the difference. No diff lock though I'd take one before a sunroof. Real steel traction aids that squeeze under tires easily and a good snow shovel and a couple of bags of abrasives is all I need to explore unmaintained forestry roads in the winter.

You did good and you have a great potential to learn. I have seen plenty of 4WDers who would have been stuck in your place. Remember it is 10% the vehicle and 90 % the driver.

Enjoyed watching your video. I own a 2020 SR5, 4WD, double cab, 6ft bed. I too would have been on my edge going where you went in that snow. That 16 " bottom clearance filled up quickly as that snow got deeper. Maybe different tires would of done better. But overall,, you got freed up and you were able to come back down the mountain. I'd still give it high marks.

Ok hear is what I have learned after 2 1/2 years of owning a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road. The truck is awesome the tires are not. The if you don't want to get stranded, up grade your tires before going on any dirt road with lots of rocks. After doing lots and lots of research if you want to stick to the stock 265 70 R16 you want cooper discover ST max tires. I have only had these for three months and they are way better on the snow and ice than the Goodyear wranglers that come stock and 10X more puncture resistant. The following are the other minim mods/ accessories I would by right after you get your truck; tri fold alumni bed cover available on eBay for around 350, husky flor liners, brake controller (get U-Haul to do it or do it your self),

I don't think the traction control turns off on low range, but instead the stability control turns off. All wheels were turning very well at low range so crawl control or rear locker wouldn't have added much. Even from the video can see that the traction control was still working. If about to get badly stuck, one thing that could also do, is to drop the tire pressure a little. It makes it easier for the tire to bite. But great video!

2:00 The payload capacity on the sticker is NOT bed-only capacity. That is the capacity for the ENTIRE truck, including all occupants and gear inside the cab (Including the driver). It says this on the sticker itself. If you put 1,095LB of rock in the bed then the truck will be over GVWR as soon as you get into the driver's seat. The misunderstanding of how GVWR, payload capacity, and tow ratings work is why so many people overload their vehicles and then wonder why they ride/handle like crap or, unfortunately, end up wrecking because of a gross weight imbalance.

Biggest issue is when you explained the 4x4 in the beginning, you explained this as if it was in 4x4 hi or low, with diff locked, but if you don’t lock the diff then you have no issue, the inside wheel of a turn will turn normal as in 2 hi no locked in at the same speed
