Third time's a charm, right? My FEST videos of The Menzingers had security folks in front of me so deep that I was lucky to catch the band in between them. Having known Tom and Greg tend to gravitate stage right (my left), I positioned myself there to get good shots of them. This paid off when two mic stands in front of me validated my planning.
I shot at an angle so I could get the span of the stage and get all band members. I mostly wanted to capture Tom and Greg as they traded vocal duties with their respective songs. I accomplished this task but when a heavy crowd surfing presence arrived, security guards started lining in front of me. I started getting FEST shot vibes again but it wasn't bad. This video is far better than the previous two I shot, hands down.
The sound was amazing--two hanging speaker arrays flanking both sides of the stage along with speakers facing the audience that were behind the stage monitors ensured I got good sound. Vocals were loud compared to when I shot Touché Amoré and Screaming Females, where I felt the stage speakers weren't even used, resulting in some weaker vocals captured.
Because there were three bands, I opted for my SmallRig set up where I velcroed a MagSafe charger to give me continuous battery power throughout the night. When the night was over, I still had over 80% juice left to my phone! My Shure MV88+ was mounted via cold shoe mount to the left of my phone where I also used it as a handle to guide my footage.
Despite security making a heavy presence towards the second half of this video, I'm fairly happy with what I captured on video.
