In this episode I tell the story of Captain Samuel Watts of the 10th Mississippi Infantry, who was captured at the battle of Franklin, Tennessee. After his capture he was forced to surrender his sword, but in 1886 his former captors returned it to him.

In November 1989 I participated in my first major Civil War reenactment, which was the battle of Franklin. As a member of the 17th Kentucky U.S., I endured freezing cold, a grass fire in the middle of the battle, and an intense immersive experience fighting in the works near the cotton gin. I was hooked from that moment on, and I spent more than a decade reenacting the Civil War. Franklin has been special to me ever since.
