The Tesla Model Y, a Kia EV-6 and the BMW i4 eDrive 40 were on my shopping list back in March. Didn't care for the spartan interior and rough ride of the Y. Price hikes right in the middle of my shopping window didn't help either. Took a short drive in the EV-6 and was underwhelmed by the interior. A dealer markup of $5K + $4K in mandatory dealer-installed options ended any continued interest. My son leases an ICE BMW 4 series so I was familiar with the driving dynamics and the seating environment. Had a very pleasant experience with my local BMW dealer and with the $7500 federal tax credit (yes, I have a binding contract in place since March), the car will cost about $54K with the M Sport package. I ultimately chose the BMW for the anticipated driving experience. I won't get quite the kick that's in the dual motor M50, however, my impression from others is that the RWD i4 offers a better balanced chassis. Hope to finally get my hands on it in November.
@grahamsalmons20272 жыл бұрын
I could have said almost precisely the same. The 40 range is just way more practical and by all accounts is still a fast car. I spent most of my time on the motorway (live in the UK) and need the range, one of my trips is 110m each way. I never wanted a Tesla. Just can’t live with the minimalism inside, and I like to have a cluster in front of me. Quality is dubious too. Briefly considered EV6 and Ionic 5, but they don’t have the quality and I don’t want an SUV or a large car. I like a sporty drive but have a family. Finally I am a BMW kinda guy. I’ve had I think 7 now. There is just a familiarity to this car, I won’t have to relearn everything and that was important to me as electric is a big enough step already. Ordered my i4 in April. Delivery expected November.

I have to disagree, everything has changed.... No more oil leaks, no more engine/transmission problems, much less maintenance. I would never buy a regular ICE powered BMW but this I would buy. Sure they're might still be some material or build quality issues that might come up but other than that I don't think much can go wrong with electric motors.
@gkacvinsky2 жыл бұрын
Although I've owned two previous BMWs (before my M50) and I fully understand the fear of BMW maintenance and repair costs, EV design makes this a totally different game. The many thousands I spent maintaining my previous ICE BMWs were all related to components that don't exist in the i4 M50. Even the brakes shouldn't require replacement within the first 100,000 to 150,000 miles. I don't expect to spend a ton of money maintaining this car except for tires, cabin air filters, and windshield washer fluid. I'll concede that the suspension system may be a maintenance item around 100,000 miles, but I'm prepared for that.

I agree with your conclusion. Build a great car and make it EV. This BMW looks great. But in cold weather climates a 200m range is insufficient. Also if I need to go into a screen to get to HVAC controls while driving that is a deal killer and I don’t care how many apps it has. In 2 years this tech will be obsolete just like any other tech.

20" wheels like this are rated at 227mi. Since those are performance tires, you don't want to drive them in winter weather anyways. The 19" wheels get 270 and. Stick to the speed limit and drive is sanely you can easily stretch that to 300 as many people have claimed. Get the eDrive40 and it goes even farther. With 19" wheels this will have no problem with 200 miles even in winter.

I’m a little sensitive to you calling the i8 “sleek but slow”. That’s a bad rap. I own one and it does not feel slow. I traded in a 560 hp M5 for the i8 because in normal driving, the i8 is quicker. In 2015 Car and Driver clocked an i8 to 60 in 3.6 seconds. It won’t beat a Tesla Plaid, but that’s a respectable time. Btw I have an i4 M50 on order, the test drive won me over. I am NOT trading in the i8, it’s a keeper.

Test drove one of these a few weeks ago, was ready to pull the trigger, but after the explanation of ~12 months to get an allocation, and a "who knows" when it would be built, i backed off.
