2022 GM Refresh Vehicles: how to reclaim your infotainment from onstar, and fix audio bug in carplay

Have you recently cancelled onstar, and are annoyed by all the “you need a data plan for this” and “you need onstar for that” messages? Or just tired of seeing apps like navigation that you can’t use taking up real estate? This video will show you how to reclaim your infotainment system from onstar. As well as the ability to use your in vehicle apps without it with either a phone hotspot or other mobile hotspot device.
In the second half of the video, I show how i resolved the carplay audio stuttering/cutting out bug, where music randomly drops then comes back a few moments later.
NOTE: not sure if it’s correlated, but i also deleted the Xfinity app from my phone. This is because xfinity will control your phones wifi and jump to available networks, which may be interfering with carplay as you pass businesses with xfinity wifi. If you still experience audio stuttering, try deleting the xfinity app.

Thank you for this. I just cancelled my OnStar this morning and had your Reddit post saved previously. This worked great for taking back control of the Google assistant, etc when needed. Worked perfectly, even reconnected to the hot spot later on like you showed.

Great information! I thought I had poked around in the setting, but you did the deep dive. FWIW, I listen to music on a USB drive and it too stutters two or three times at the start of a drive. My Infotainment screen locks up every few weeks and needs a hard re-start, sometimes even pulling the Info2 fuse.

Great video! I recently purchased a 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 High Country and my audio does the same thing (cutting out for a second or two) except in my case it does it with all media i.e. am, fm, SiriusXM, etc.. Not just CarPlay.When I connect to personal hotspot it stops like you experienced, but when I disconnect it starts skipping again.

Thanks for this. I’ve had my 23 Sierra for a week and I hadn’t figured some of this out, really helpful. Looking forward to trying the Wi-Fi hotspot, hope you’re right about it automatically reconnecting. That doesn’t happen with regular devices like tablets using my hotspot. I have to go back to the hotspot homepage before devices reconnect.

If you just wanted to use Android Auto, does it display the map in full screen? Also, do you know if it matters if you plug in your phone versus wireless Android auto

If you press the bottom left icon in Android auto, it will display maps in full screeen

I have not, other than the audio skip issue. Might be worth disconnecting your battery and holding the start button for a full drain then reconnecting it. Make sure firmware is up to date, if none of that works take it on up to the dealer

The answer i’ve gotten is that its on apple’s side of things, that they do not support the right aspect ratio to make it work without black bars on the sides. (Like they have a wider ratio available but it results in 2 ish inches of dead space on the screen to the right) hopefully in the future!

I noticed you don’t have the 4GLTE icon next to your location services icon. Can you do a video explaining how to turn that off? Or does that turn off when you cancel all the services? I only pay for the remote access plan for distance remote start

My icon has actually returned on its own, but you are correct for a while there it disappeared when the service was deactivated. I believe the truth of it is data is always active on your truck, GM makes money farming the data of where your truck is and has gone, what kind of trips you drive, etc. Your truck is always connected, you just pay for the privilege to use that connection yourself. Instead of just being a data farm. Other uses for this constant connection are firmware updates and recalls, which for software does save GM money in the long run I believe.

@@Cody_Lowen I was reading through OnStars Privacy policy today, it says we have the right to call and opt out of any selling or sharing of our information. I called and after being passed around a few times and 30 minutes on the phone was able to get them to opt me out of all that for me! I then wanted to turn off the 4GLTE WiFi modem but they told me there was hardware that had to be removed by the dealership and they had to have TAC (technical assistance center) walk them through how to do it. Next thing I’m trying to figure out is how to remove any OnStar communication systems so they can’t disable my throttle or ignition if they wanted to. No luck yet. There used to be a fuse you could pull but I’m not finding one specifically labeled OnStar. If you know of anything that can disable all communication with onstar that would be sweet!

@@Cody_Lowen I called OnStar today and after about 20 minutes was able to get them to opt me out of all data sharing or selling! They also were able to disable the Wi-Fi connectivity on the truck but they said to fully remove the Wi-Fi modem I’d have to have the dealership do it.

I have a 22 1500 RST and I got the AllApp Access bundle from OnStar at a discount (Supplier Discount) but I still find it outrageous that i have to pay to access at least google maps on the main screen... I'd love to use AndroidAuto or CarPlay but that thing just drains my battery like crazy...

@@Boobtube. Yes you can but you still lose battery life even while charging. I'm sorry but many car manufacturers have free integrated maps in their cars... Why can't GM do that? There's GPS antenna in the car why does the car need to be "connected" online for me to use it?

@@HelloWorld-kp1rn follo the dollo. there is your answer. If you start out with a decent charge rate on your phone, the cell phone maps should not drain it down to zero battery as long as it is being charged. Can't change the greed in the world, you just have to adapt to it and find other ways.

Change your charging cable, newer vehicles have super fast charging so make the switch to type-c and you won't be losing charge while charging

Ok and? Why would you pay $180 a year for the exact thing your cell phone does for free. It’s a huge waste of money for absolutely no gain. you can’t get access to the data plan without first purchasing onstar. If that is not the case feel free to correct me, but i found no way to do it otherwise. Base onstar plan is like $40 a month.

That's correct, you can't just have data, data is an add on to OnStar, so you must have them both
