Don't get me wrong, I'm pro 911 (been wanting a 996), but I think you're underestimating the volatility of the maintenance costs. IMS? $4k. Scored cylinder walls? $12k. Engine replacement? $20k. Obviously should also get a few PPIs (more cost), but they don't catch everything. I'd want to hold on to the $16k difference to account for maintenance. Contrast that with the opportunity cost of cheap financing on a new BRZ, where you can invest spare cash knowing that you have a warranty and safe, reliable transportation. I agree that the 996 will appreciate, but by how much? Will it outperform the stock market? At $17k, it's a risky investment from a maintenance perspective. But also from a collector market perspective. Who knows what petrol cars will be worth in 30 years when the world has a much different transportation infrastructure? Enjoyed the video. It's a fun topic to think about.

Totally! Previously, I had doubled the projected maintenance cost of the 996 and received feedback that it was way too high. But if I were to run into the costs you mentioned, my previous #'s would have been barely enough :'( With used cars, especially German ones, the maintenance variables will make or break the budget, and this example. To your last point, I will say that there are ways to finance a used car with similar (or more favorable) terms as a new car e.g. portfolio line of credit @ 2-3%. - blog.wealthfront.com/advantages-wealthfront-portfolio-line-credit-traditional-home-equity-line-credit/ - www.m1finance.com/articles-1/portfolio-line-of-credit-guide/

@@justintodriving I wasn't aware that you could get such favorable terms for a used car. Thanks for the info. Though I'd still be a bit nervous to run into an unexpected repair and still owe money on the loan. Comes down to our risk tolerance, I suppose!
@justintodriving4 жыл бұрын
@@moptoe I too would be wary of creep in maintenance costs, especially with 20 year old German cars (like my E36 M3). My personal rule on financing cars is that I will only finance it if I can afford to pay it off at any time. And exactly -- everyone's risk tolerance will vary how they view this "investment"! I missed the bottom portion of your first comment, but I also suspect the stock market would be a *much* better investment than most cars (especially the 996). Certainly a fun financial exercise to run through and I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! I plan to do more of these so let me know if there's any other models that I can research.

One thing someone needs to pay attention to buying an older car is that they need to have lots of cash on hand for unexpected breakdowns. Another important thing to look out for is that wearable items, tires, brakes on the Porsche is a lot more expensive than the BRZ, simply because they are bigger. If you track your car, or drive them hard, that would make a big dent in your wallet.

Thank you for going thru those numbers!
@SilverArrow10262 жыл бұрын
The biggest crucial factor you forgot to mention is the mileage of this 996 at "122000" miles! After 5 years, (let's throw in a general conservative number) you drove 50,000 miles, would the "172000" miles 996 be appreciating? There may even be trouble selling it at such high mileage
@edd21842 жыл бұрын
Realistically if you're getting a 996 in 2022 especially one with higher mileage more than likely all the issues have been addressed. On the other hand nothing beats a factory warranty. The only exception is anyone that is paying ridiculous dealer markup these days is just a fool...

What do you think the driving experience is like between the two? I have an 86 and love it but never driven any 911. Always been a dream. Amazed how close the true ownership costs are but the analysis makes a lot of sense
@justintodriving3 жыл бұрын
I owned a first gen 86 as well and have driven 986 (Boxster) /996/997’s. I’d take a Porsche any day from a driving experience perspective. 911’s certainly can be more expensive to own (they’re reliable, but parts can be expensive), and a bonus with 911’s you’re more likely to have it appreciate vs. depreciate like an 86. Unfortunately the used car market has exploded since the creation of this video and it’s now hard to find any of the 911’s I used in this video for

@@justintodriving A customer let me drive a 718 boxster with a 6 speed and it was amazing. Wasn’t sure if a 996 911 would be as good. The 911s have gone up a lot but I can sell my 86 (which I bought new) for $5k more than I bought it for a year ago. So makes up for some of the price gains with 911s. I’ll have to drive one. Thanks

I have been shopping for 996s. I think a more realistic price for a good 996 example of a manual coupe that doesn't give you headaches is more like 23k. Another thing, what are the items that costs 2300 dollars at the 4th year of a brz ownership?
@justintodriving4 жыл бұрын
$23k sounds reasonable given what's on the market. I see they've appreciated from when I was looking 18 months ago! The $2,300 BRZ year 4 maintenance cost is an estimate on the "True Cost to Own" calculator on the outgoing model via Edmunds. Could be a major service, clutch replacement, etc. around that time depending on the condition of the car at ~50,000 miles.

But why buy a 20+ year old car ? Wouldn't it be hard to find certain OEM parts? As I'm sure they stopped making them
@EliasTheHunter3 ай бұрын
Nope! Porsche still supports parts for all of their vehicles. It’s actually absurd how simple it is to get them from their 80,000 part warehouse.
@jamesiverson2094 жыл бұрын
996's are getting old these days - 16 years plus. Even if the multiple major M96 engine issues ( www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-996-997-Carrera/13-ENGINE-Common_Engine_Carrera_Problems/13-ENGINE-Common_Engine_Carrera_Problems.htm ) have been addressed, you are reaching the point where routine maintenance is going to become, well routine, and no repair to a Porsche is cheap. New clutch? $3K+. Major automatic transmission service? Probably more than a clutch. Minor electrical glitches? Don't ask.
@pixelking_8714 жыл бұрын
Plus the parts are not exotic you don’t have go to a special dealership to get service no one knows how much labor cost plus the parts are for these older Porsches they start becoming collectibles as well
@dr.gordonshumway71162 жыл бұрын
When you buy a used European car, just remember that when you go to buy parts and labor for that machine, those prices are still based on it being a $100k car. In many cases, if you can't afford the new one, you probably can't afford the used one.

Title TOTALLY misleading! Comparing 13 model year old Porsche (ZERO warranty or sure way to know maintenance history( to BRAND NEW outstanding warranty BRZ...I mean it is a VERY real possibility that used Porsche has hidden maintenance nightmares lurking ...and IF the Porsche loses that IMS bearing? Could EASILY cost 25k for motor unless you buy another unknown quantity used motor. Also this comparison fails to take into consideration technical niceties on 2022 carr vs clapped out 1999 car ....total apples and oranges ...the ONLY way I would accept this comparison would be a used BRZ vs used Porsche equal price....NOW lets you make that pan out in favor of Porsche. BTW I LOVE Porsche and woud rather drive one...It is just that I dont think smiles per dollar is worth it ...my other passion is motorcycles which I can TOTALLY get my super vehicle performance FIX with any hour of the day....you would have to spend just a SH*T LOAD of money on high tier Porsche to compete much with a 10k used sport bike....just saying..... heck my current "sports car" toy is just an ND Miata and it almost enough for me not to shop for something better. ...I kinda finally ike '22 BRX/GR86 for the extra power over my ND AND because it has a little backseat so my dog could finally go with me on drives! ....I think actually he could have the entire trunk together with back seat area ....I can really see enjoying a new BRZ with that warranty! YEARS of reliable low cost maintenance! A used Porsche? Who knows?? BTW it would be a Cayman NOT the 911 if you ask me...
