2022 Hyundai i20N Review: New Small Hot Hatch King?
Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and a VERY Merry Christmas to all of you. I wasn't too sure whether or not to upload a video today with it being Christmas, but seeing as I've had to put my Live Q and A on ice for the time being, and also the fact I've been sat on this particular content for far too long, I thought I'd treat you all to my review of the Hyundai i20N.
In world where small hot hatches are becoming extinct Hyundai's N Division - also responsible for the i30N and Kona N - thought it was was about time to throw its hat in to the ring to see whether a car could be produced to not only rival the Ford Fiesta ST, but beat it. To help do this, it is powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine offering 204hp and 275Nm, although there is over 300 available on overboost.
This South Korean muscle is fed to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential. 62mph is done in 6.2 seconds - .3 seconds faster than the ST, and where possible - and legal - the i20N will top out at 143mph.
It's not just the performance that impresses, though, with a starting price a little over £25,000 the i20N is cheaper than the ST, and comes with a longer warranty which also extends to track usage. Despite the cheaper asking price, the i20N still comes with a lot of kit including: 8” alloys, LED lights, keyless entry, heated front seats, 10.25” touchscreen, heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging pad, climate control and a decent host of safety systems.

Moved from Swift Sport to one of these and it is fantastic. Handling is as good as the review suggests and I can happily use it daily, I am used to sporty cars. It can also return good mpg on a motorway run if you’re sensible,47mpg, much less if you find an appropriate B road where I genuinely think 6 figure priced sports cars would have to be on it to keep in the twisty bits. Quite possibly the most fun car I’ve owned thus far.

I really love mine when it's in the environment it was made for. When just using it for round town it's a bit jerky slightly dull where as my previous GT86 & BRZ felt fun just chaning gear round town if you know what i mean..

Now that the French are gone (Clio RS and 208 GTI Peugeot Sport) the i20 N is the best hatchback hands down.. I'm a big hot hatch fan, and after trying out this car I fell in love once again for the pocket rockets. Sadly this is a shrinking market, but it's nice to see that Hyundai is bringing what the real car obsessed people want ;) Great review :-) Currently waiting for mine.

It's the only hatch available under 25k now the Fiesta is gone - so wins by default. You then see a GR Yaris pull up alongside and wish you'd gone purchased the ultimate hot hatch. GR IS KING

Thing is, the GR is is a different league, and the price reflects that. I think it's kinda unfair to compare the i20N to th GR Yaris as the Yaris is more money and more performance. They're both cracking cars, but the GR Yaris is on a whole other level.

@Car Obsession it's certainly many levels above, but worth bearing in mind, over 95% of buyers buy on finance and the monthly payments are virtually the same on the two cars, making the headline price difference seem null and void. High finance rates and poor depreciation make the I20 quite a costly car to own

@@relentlesspursuit6894 Paid Cash for mine - The GR (if you can get one ) is 25% more expensive in Australia . But have you driven a i20N. Truly admire the GR though. It seem a lot of folks in the UK buy on finance.

@1stFaris It suspension is hard mate so of you are doing country road all the time then no. I've got a Kona N for that. But you do realise that if you want a new one you will be waiting a couple of years.The books are closed in Australia so that they can catch up with production.

@@ljp1942 They have the i30N which is more expensive, so I can’t imagine they wouldn’t bring the i20N there because of this. Plus, you should realise that there are tons of expensive vehicles on sale in many countries around the world, including Romania.

What makes it difficult? I love the ST but the i20N wins out on performance, price, warranty and practicality. OK, the design of the car isn't as attractive but that's subjective. Thanks for watching.
