I agree that the IONIQ 5 is better than the ID.4, but I'd be happy with either one. The video mentioned the IONIQ 5 comes with 2 years free DC fast charging, but the ID.4 comes with 3 years. And the I5's moveable console and glass roof are available only on the most expensive trim. A few other differences, albeit minor: ID.4 has USB-C ports rather than the I5's USB-A, ID.4 has a rear wiper but none on I5, ID.4 has a small turning diameter, ID.4 Pro S has adaptive headlights, ID.4's rear windows roll all the way down. But IONIQ 5's super fast DC charging would be valuable on a long road trip, and the I5 has a longer warranty.

I agree the IONIQ 5 is overall the better car, but this video definitely seemed a bit bias. I think the Ionic is slightly better, but it does cost more for being better, so yea, it makes sense a costlier car should be better. I bought my VW ID.4 almost a year ago, and will have 2 years left of free charging at the end of June. My car may not catch up to the Ionic, but the 3.0 software (right now only available in EU) does do some catching up, such as slightly better charging and range (very very slightly, but hey, it going in the right direction) and auto-lane changing, and Swarm (a cloud based road notification system) and other feature changes.

One thing I immediately noticed on your video was the large difference in noise levels between the two cars. The ID.4 was much quieter at ordinary road speeds. Personally I've always loved VWs handling tuning. I've owned Golfs, GTIs and Touaregs over 50 years of driving. My top compliment is that a new VW drives like a VW. When the Ioniq 5 was shown I thought it was a brilliant design. The software looks good thought the contract seems too light in daylight conditions. I wish VW would get the OTA working here in the US. All the video show that the updates should fix issues we're having at this time. The Ioniq 5 does charge quicker but on trips with our ID.4 with 3 years of free charging we found that by the time we used the restroom and got refreshments it was charged as much as we needed or in some cases higher than we needed. On Kyle Conner's race to Las Vegas the Ioniq 5 has some charging issues that slowed it down.

And the fact they tested the ID.4 with the panoramic sunroof open which would've made the road noise louder compared to the Ioniq 5 which was closed, really does show how quiet the ID.4 is - and personally I have driven both and can confirm the ID.4 is quieter and has more head room for front and back passengers. I do like the style and finish of the Ioniq 5 though.

Not mentioned for those who want to use their vehicles for sports/adventure: - ID4 has a higher towing rating, 2700lbs vs 2000lbs. That's a +33% difference, and allows for some decent trailers to be pulled. - ID4 comes stock with roof rack bars, so adding x bars and a bike rack, ski/canoe carrier, etc. is super easy. Hyundai doesn't. - from your video, the ID4 seems WAY quieter, as many have pointed out here. Curious to get a reply from the creators, no one ever seems to mention roof racks or towing capabilities.

Steering wheel, dash, and door buttons are illuminated on both Ioniq 5 and ID.4. Neither has a lockable glove box. Neither currently offers en-route battery preconditioning. There are (unofficial) statements from Hyundai suggesting they intend to add this kind of preconditioning, but they will first need to develop a charging route planner for the navigation system. The ID.4 has a charging route planner, but they've been tight lipped about update plans. So the jury's out on which (if either) will receive preconditioning first. Neither offers heated seats in the rear. The ID.4 offers a rear wiper, a rearview camera washer, and a front windshield heater that works like a rear defroster but without the visible wires. The Ioniq 5 has none of these. The ID.4 passenger seat offers identical range of motion for the passenger and driver seat. The Ioniq 5 has 8-way seats for both sides, but only the driver has the recliner leg support, so I can't say for sure if they're identical. The Ioniq 5's seats can be ventilated, though. ID.4 offers plug & charge today (latest software version). The Ioniq 5 does not.

I really enjoyed this back-to-back comparison, fellas - particularly the engaging 'banter' between you both... Thanks. As for these 2 SUVs... So here is my summary including some important elements not reflected: Design (both exterior and interior) of I5 is definitely the better one!!! The same goes with the infotainment system. The reasons I choose ID.4: Reason 1: Much smaller Turning Circles: This might be a problem if you have a tight road to your garage.. like in my case - I had to do 10+ manures to get the I5 in my Garage...with ID.4: it was just 2. Reason 2 : I have a Villa in the mountains and there is a black road for about 2km to reach it. I agree that I'd like true one pedal and hate that the sliders are not back lit but in daylight they are actually very easy and convenient to use. They can be slide or touch. Plus how can you claim the I5 is better equipped? I'd say differently equipped. The id4 has a rear wiper, rear camera cleaner, electric defrost windshield, bending headlights, wireless carplay and aa(which to your credit you mentioned) massage seats, trailer hitch with 7 Pin! connection, higher tow rating a lot more ground clearance(don't use manufacturers supplied info here..for some reason the id4 is listed at much lower ground clearance than reality). With a tape measure the id4 has 8.5 to 9 inches and the I5 has less than 7. The only thing I can see is vw is giving ground clearance measuent to little mudflap type things right behind the wheels...Oh and regarding that lack of hitch....you should hear the run around I got from Hyundai about voiding my warranty with a hitch...from TWO different dealers....and this was with THEM installing it. I finally had a dealer contact corporate to see if it was ok and they have a very vaguely worded ok(leaving room to screw me) and it cost me 1200$ parts and labour. Both of these cars will sell really well. Yes! An entire decade! I can’t believe that these two offerings still cannot replicate this. Shocking!

I really love the Ioniq 5 exterior design except for the silver 1980s lower part. They need to offer a mid/dark grey detail in addition to this. And the tonneau cover is ridiculous it's so low. It doesn't line up with the top of the rear seats... ugh that drives me crazy. And no rear wiper was a real mistake. Too many functions in the screen, ie no buttons. They also should offer some more vivid colours. Like the EV6 Yacht blue. In fact, if I had to decide between the Kia and Hyundai, I'd probably go for the Kia as it's sorted out it's trunk cover. The rear window is flatter so wind will clear the view during rain, they added buttons for the functions you use all of the time. But I can't figure out why Kia didn't go for a pano roof. Re: the VW, I think this design might have more longevity in the end. And the trunk space and cover seem much larger. Apparently, VW has several software upgrades already finished so many of their interface issues are being resolved. Not sure why VW decided to put 2 screens instead of 1 sweeping one. And it is 4 or 5k cheaper up here in Canada. If you buy an ID4 go for the AWD for sure. 300hp makes it a much better vehicle. Such a tough decision. In my opinion all of these are a much better choice over the Model 3 or Y which are a good 15-27k more.

The lack of rear wiper on the ioniq 5 wasn’t even discussed. In snowy regions with salt, it’s a significant omission. Also, the ota software update capability is hugely important and as far as I know, Hyundai have not confirmed that all modules are upgradeable.

I just stopped by both dealers. The IONIQ was in stock surprisingly, but came with a 10k markup. No thanks. The 2023 ID.4 is potentially eligible for a $7500 tax credit (depending on what congress decides), since it is built in Chananooga TN. Not so for the IONIQ. So currenlty you are lookign at 59k for a IONIQ SEL, whereas an ID.4 ProS RWD would come in at ~48k, less the 7.5k credit (if you are eligible), potentially an 18k difference. YIKES! The Hyundai fet like a nice sedan, had a lot of space, but felt like some wasted space in the front. Huge trunk. The ID.4 also had decent space, but maybe not quite as big. The IONIQ did fell very "modern", but honeslty maybe a bit over the top video-gamish (for me); The ID.4 felt more like a mid SUV. I did not like the screen colors on the ID.4, that may be modifiable. Didnt really care for the drive/reverse selctor on the ID.4. The ID.4 infotainment sytem seemed clunky-unintuitive.

I really wish people would move away from range and charging speed as such a “big” part of these. Tom and Kyle speak to it often on the pod and that it doesn’t effect most drivers. I’ve had a Kona for almost 3 years and have yet to need to go to a DC Fast charger. Same goes for the range piece, for most people it rarely matters. There is one thing I find super puzzling with all these car reviews and comparisons. Why are you guys not talking about the most important feature: To what extend do they keep lane, stay at distance to the car infront or stay at a certain speed? I think 99% of us use our car for commuting and the most important feature is how well does it drive by itself. Does it do less than that or does it do more than that, awesome. Tell us. But at least these fundamentals. I have zero clue if any car does em except Teslas.

It has every single enhancement these electric vehicles have, so we know it has just as many chips and electronic feedback loops as any electric vehicle. Yet it cost me $39,000 fully loaded with all the safety features, Ventilated Seats, Active Cruise Control, and 360 degree Surround-View, as well as a 282 hp/ 313 lbs ft of Torque powerplant. And with its turbo engine, 8 speed dual clutch transmission, catalytic converter, EPA measuring devices, complex cooling systems, et. al. it is most definitely more complicated to manufacture than these small electric vehicles. Yet, it still cost me $39,000 total. Am I making my point that there is NO EXCUSE for the price tags they are placing on these. I will move to an electric vehicle when its simpler construction enables prices LESS than what I've paid before.

I'm really surprised about the final verdict in this one. Or, actually that you were able to pick a clear winner at all. Personally, I don't like the interior of the IONIC 5. Although the ID.4 is not perfect, at least, it doesn't sound like an amusement park. (In Europe, you can also get other seats in the ID.4 called Top Sport.. With the Hyundai you're stuck with the "living room" seats.) For practicality, the IONIQ 5 lacks rails for roof rack, although it _can_ carry one, it doesn't have a load through system and you don't have a flexible partition net. The latter is a major safety concern! Owners also complain about the missing rear window wiper, and the IONIC 5 it doesn't have nearly as good lights as the ID.4. Again, the difference might be bigger in Europe, but even without the "matrix" lights, I believe the ID.4 is better in this department. When it comes to range, the ID.4 did better than the IONIC 5 in both summer- and winter test performed by the Norwegian Automobile Association (low speed mountain run, 100-0%, driven together). The ID.4 GTX also beat the IONIQ 5 in Teslabjørns "70 mph" summer range test with some margin. I recommend that you refer to WLTP or do your own real life head to head tests, in future comparisons. Further, the charging performance and thermal control is improved in the later ID.4 software versions. I can understand that you can't take that into the equation in the US at this point, and the peak power is still nowhere near the IONIQ 5. However, the thermal control, or lack thereof, is just terrible in the IONIC 5. That's a potential, major drawback in real life. I also feel that the overall drive feel, suspension and level of road noise in the ID.4 is great. I'm surprised that you think the IONIQ 5 beats it. I believe you can actually hear/sense the difference in the video 13:55 .. When it comes to the rear seats, it's great that they're movable and recline in the IONICQ 5. To me, they seem a bit low and flat, and I imagine that 3-4 adults would be more comfortable in the ID.4. If they sit upright. I might be wrong. 🙂

When testing out the Ioniq5 and EV6, I kind of just feel like if I was driving the ID.4 with maybe a little bit more of a content than the ID.4. It is nice the fact that it does charge faster, and have ventilated seats. But you can't get massaging seats on the Korean Twins and that's one reason I like about the VW. I don't feel that it's differentiated enough for me to say got to have the Korean Twins where the VW do just as good. Not to mention VW came out first than the Korean twins so obviously that the Korean twins have to make just a little bit better. I do differ on the materials of the ID.4 just because I test out the Ioniq5 SE where it's just full on plastics inside whereas the ID.4 isn't.
