We are hoping to go back in October - the weather on your video looks promising 🙏🏼 thanks for posting. We were snowed in our holiday home a few weeks back, all our plans were cancelled. Never going in Dec again!

Oh no! December is a tough time to go. We got very lucky with the weather in October, it’s usually the transition period from summer to winter. So the earlier you plan to go in October the better. Also the number of places open during the tourist season is better in early October than late October. September is even better due to weather, more places open, and more roads are open. We contacted places we wanted to see to see if they were open during our stay. We went early October and got to enjoy our trip without issues. Let us know if we can help!

The weather looks nice and I thought October was the wettest month in Iceland. But I know it is unpredictable. I am coming to Iceland this coming September until the end of October. I plan to cycle across Iceland for 35 days. Btw, wonderful video.

Thank you for watching our video! And Thank global warming. Historically October is the wettest. We did get hit by wet weather and a major storm made part of the ring road impassable with snow and ice. We met people from around the world needing to change their travel plans and changed lodging situations because of that storm. Biking is going to be very tough during this time. Roads will get closed and you may need to change your plans. The middle of the country where you have the highlands is closed to anyone without a 4x4 by October. On our October trip certain roads were starting to get closed. By October the majority of the camping grounds are closed due to muddy fields and terrible roads. The cold and wind will be your nemesis and Mother Nature will usually win. So be prepared to change your plans as necessary. Early September to early October is better to go for your biking trip based on historical weather patterns. And in Iceland, October is when facilities close and tents aren’t the best to weather the Icelandic winds, they will tear the doors off of cars. Cold is one thing but the wind is no joke. We met cyclists in early May when we first went. And one person did it on a Brampton, props to him! May is a great time to go because the weather is more predictable and the roads are overall passable and it only gets better. You will most likely have a better time in those months than to try risking the whole of October. A lot of stuff closes and you may want to fly to parts of the country rather than cycle your way through Iceland. Ice, wind, elevation changes, lack of camping facilities make the trip less enjoyable for October. Areas around Reykjavik are the “least” impacted by weather in October but the cold and wind may make it hard to cycle. It would be good to have the capability to call for help, and keep a travel plan updated. Good luck and have a great time circling Iceland!

Very true! Even with that bleakness, there is life and vibrant colors to be found in Iceland. We always marvel at Iceland’s landscape when we visit. It’s like another world! I guess that’s why so many movies about alien or fantasy worlds film here!😝

We were! But it was an amazing opportunity to see them and capture them on video. I got lucky again but in Maui and captured a whale tail sailing. It’s around the 4:00 location in our Maui Video.

We got very lucky and did see the aurora borealis for only one night in Heydalur! Absolutely gorgeous. Even though the conditions were considered not ideal we saw the Aurora in October.

I plan to go solo in October and want to drive the ring road! do you recommend?! I'm not sure if i want to stay in a camper van or find lodging yet either.

Solo trip to Iceland’s ring road? That’s just an amazing adventure by itself! Just remember that a lot of places (certain roads, hotels and restaurants) do close their doors by end of September to middle of October. So check places you want to go to and make sure they will be open when you’re there. If you go October then winter maybe starting and expect some crazy weather during your trip. A camper van may not be the best option during winter because camp grounds may not be open. You could rent a 4x4 and get accommodations around the ring road. Everything stays open in Reykjavik so worst case you can do things there and the golden circle. But the ring road is the main road that is well maintained and usually stays open throughout the year but they will close parts of it if the road isn’t safe. Let me know if you have more questions.

DId you drive through the F roads ? any idea when did they close down for winter

We did not drive the F roads. By the time we got to Iceland, mid October, most of the F roads were closed. There is still a lot of unpaved roads. Closures are dependent on how passable the road is or if you have the right vehicle to trek through. Check www.road.is/ for the latest info on road conditions. But expect F roads to basically close in September sometime. I hope that helps! When are you thinking of going?

We went early October. Right at the end of summer tourist season. Just need to be mindful that things (roads, restaurants, etc) will close at the end of season. But its not too crowded which was great.
