Talking about catching catfish for the first time on a lure, I fish a lot of the back water off the Sabine River for crappie. That back water has fantastic catfishing too, but most years I might catch maybe three or four from early spring to late fall on artificial baits. Ha, this year I was targeting crappie with a little one inch pink crappie jigs. Sometimes free reeling it, others on a popping cork. Ha, the catfish were tearing it up this spring on that jig! Targeting crappie and ending up also bringing home half a dozen cats at least in the 18 inch range. I don't like skinning smaller cats. I don't know if it was something unusual about the fish this year, or it could be the bait since this was the first year I used that particular jig. Still catching crappie as well. On a funny note, when you are targeting crappie and hang into a four pound cat, you can't help but think, "Please let this be the world record crappie!" 🤣

It was surprising for me because it was my first time. I think the reason they went for the lure is because they thought it was a live fish or something else.

It was really good when I first got there. Then they turn off the water to the power house and I had to go to the middle. Most of the huge fish are out of reach because they’re closer to the main dam.

Buddy, I saw that you are struggling with the oar on the kayak. You should get a foot paddle for it. It easier to control the kayak while your hands were busy with FISH ON . Plus it helps if you get a small anchor for it. To hold it in place while fish, so you won’t drift into the current. It’s dangerous at the dam. Be careful.

To get the foot pedal, I would have to up grade to a brand new kayak. It’s very expensive.

Yes, i went there couple of time before the new dam and there was plenty of fish when they discharged enough water.
