Where do I start? I watched most of the TCU game an was stunned to see OU only rushing 3 defensive linemen nearly all game long, the TCU QB had all day to throw and burned the secondary time and time again with deep passing. The coaching staff didn't make any adjustments, they just kept doing the same things over and over and hoping for different results. The 8 deep secondary played zones most of the afternoon but they did not seem well coached here either. TCU receivers were catching balls all alone in zones that were cleared out by other receivers. I had to wonder if they were trying to play man-to-man, I couldn't really tell what they were doing. Honestly, this is the most poorly prepared OU defense I have ever seen and vendables is supposed to be a defensive minded coach? Its just stunning. I am not really an OU fan but I can certainly understand some of the fan outrage. Its one thing to just be over match and beaten by an opponent, but quite another to be unprepared to play.

7 Years of not giving a damn about defense has caught up. That is all outsiders really need to know. Its like Notre Dame's QB issue. Any "OU" fans calling for BV to be fired are not actually OU fans.

Go woke. Go broke. Notice Oklahoma Head Coach Brent Venables accepted Gundy’s resignation without defending him. Since I can't include a link, here is the story: Oklahoma Football Coach Ousted For Reading Forbidden Word By Greg Wilson Aug 8, 2022 Oklahoma assistant football coach Cale Gundy lost his job for reading a bad word from a player's iPad. A longtime University of Oklahoma assistant football coach lost his job, apparently for reading an unspecified bad word. Cale Gundy, who played quarterback for the Sooners in the early 1990s and had been part of the coaching staff since 1999, most recently as the receivers coach, resigned Sunday night after a controversy that began in the film room. He said he caught a player looking at an iPad when he was supposed to be studying game film, and when he read aloud what was on the device, he spoke the word that cost him his job. “The words displayed had nothing to do with football,” Gundy said Sunday. “One particular word that I should never - under any circumstances - have uttered was displayed on that screen. In the moment, I did not even realize what I was reading and, as soon as I did, I was horrified.” Gundy seemed to accept that merely pronouncing the word or words was a career-ender, even though he didn’t use it as an epithet. “I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words. What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional,” Gundy said. “Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions. The unfortunate reality is that someone in my position can cause harm without ever meaning to do so.” Oklahoma Head Coach Brent Venables accepted Gundy’s resignation without defending him. “It’s with sadness that I accept Coach Gundy’s resignation,” Venables said. “The culture we’re building in our program is based on mutual respect. Our staff is here to develop successful student-athletes, but also young men of character. As the leaders of this program, it’s essential that we hold ourselves to the highest standards as we model for our players the type of men we want them to become.” Not everyone thought Gundy deserved to be run out of Norman for reading something aloud. Former Sooners running back Joe Mixon, now an NFL star with the Cincinnati Bengals, said Gundy deserved better. In a long and thoughtful statement Mixon tweeted out, he said Gundy was a good coach, caring mentor, and not a racist. “I offer my highest support and admiration for Coach Gundy, and will be extremely disappointed with the school, the program, and the administrators if he is not allowed to continue as a coach at the university going forward,” Mixon wrote. Gundy’s brother, Mike Gundy, is the head football coach at cross-state rival Oklahoma State.

As an Oklahoma fan, Ipersonally didn’t expect a perfect transition for Oklahoma. Lincoln Riley had a very abrupt and controversial exit from the program. He also took Caleb Williams who could have easily been the future of OU football. With that and a lot of other factors, I personally expected OU to be a bit overrated. But I didn’t expect them to lose back to back games. Or for them to get their butts kicked by TCU. I do think they’ll be reborn in about a year or 2 and be by far the best defensive team in the conference. But this year in particular was always going to be a struggle. Hopefully they can make a late season run and adjust to possibly win Bedlam. But it’ll take some time before they are in shape to win the Big 12 again.

OU has the same issues now as it did in seasons before: devoid of top-end defensive talent, and more importantly, lacking discipline and preparation. I'm not sure how much of the defensive struggles can be placed on Venables and how much on the actual DC, Ted Roof, but that side of the ball needs new talent and better coaching and playcalling. The offense has the pieces to be solid. I think you give Grinch too much credit - the defense was pretty bad last year too, and he really only had one good year at OU. The problems on that side of the ball were never truly fixed.

It is not surprising to see Venables failing in year 1. Most head coaches do not end up elite like Stoops and Lincoln Riley. OU fans have enjoyed elite coaching for over 20 years and forgot that even Blue Bloods can struggle with poor coaching. Will BV end up a bust Like Charlie Strong/Scott Frost? Will BV be mid like Tom Herman/ Jimbo Fisher? Will BV end up good like Harbaugh? or will BV end up elite like Lincoln Riley/Ryan Day? We will find out but statistically it is not likely that BV happens to be another elite coach. Time will tell.

I’d like to see any team do good after an offseason that Oklahoma had. You lose most of your coaching staff, most of your upperclassman to the draft or transfer portal, you have 9 months to overhaul everything on offense and defense and after that you have a beloved coach that has worked with the offense for decades get let go a few weeks before the season. On top of that you don’t have a defined culture in the locker room yet. Many transfers taking leading roles with many young players seeing major playing time. It also didn’t help that the defense was heavily relying on a couple of good players to make plays, it really falls apart when those players get hurt. But yes, the fans should have had a more realistic outlook going into the season, but the media wasn’t helping by hyping up the USC vs. OU drama. It’s a rebuild year and it may be several more until they can get back to reloading like they were. Everyone needs to stop jumping to conclusions whether good or bad and give Venables some time to find himself and the team to build better chemistry.

@@logandnl Talent and resources only go so far. Look at Texas and A&M they are loaded on both but always end up with multiple losses. Right now OU needs better team chemistry and a cohesive team identity. They have talent but they aren’t playing as a team. It was inevitable since it’s an amalgamation of Riley’s regime, Venables coaching staff, and the transfer portal filling in the holes. Once they get that stuff taken care of they’ll be great, it’s just if and/or when they can create a unified identity.

I disagree with your take on Dylan Gabriel. He’s a top 15 QB in college football. He’s better than Rattler and he’s definitely not the problem. OU will be fine eventually but this season isn’t going to be pretty. I was adamant that their preseason ranking was way too high. They should have been ranked somewhere between 15-20. There’s just too much turn over and transition with a 1st time head coach and a lot of starters that needed to be replaced on both sides of the ball. I honestly think this is also the least talented roster OU has probably had in last 8 years +/-

Should've stayed at Clemson. Brent is a defensive minded coach and he just doesn't have the talent on Defense like he had in Tiger Town and nor do I think he will get it there. Big 12 is an Offensive conference. Everybody scores alot of points in that conference. I know it's his first year coaching. But I just don't think Brent will be a good HC. He will be overwhelmed. He said it himself when he was at Clemson. He liked being a DC because he didn't have to deal with all the other things that a HC has to deal with. He could just focus on the defense. But money will make people do things against their better judgement. But one thing is for sure. He better get it together before they enter the SEC or they will be Dismantled week in and week out.

How well did Riley do in the portal? How well did Venables do in the portal? No one asks why Riley left. I think Riley saw that OU boosters wouldn’t help as much with NIL. USC has a lot of options on that front and they were willing to pay ball.

I don’t know what happened with Rattler either. We have him now and I’m trying to be cool about the guy, because he’s under the direction of a bad OC. However, no matter which way we slice it, he’s struggling mightily.

@@Andrew-mp9hu He’s probably shell shocked from the 10 sacks your O line has given up. In league play you’re right behind Alabama in passing. Comp % Alabama is 65.85 and SC is 65.66. But Bama has 5 less INT and 10 more TDs. Oh and Bama are still undefeated. but go look at the stats. It’s interesting

Riley left because he knew he had left the program in bad shape? Definitely hurt losing all of the recruits he took. I still think Venables is an upgrade. It will take some time to rebuild.

Oklahoma has been a top team since last century in the 1970s. Oklahoma and Nebraska had some of the biggest games of the year with Texas thrown into it over the years.

I wouldn't surprise from jump because I knew that this team didn't have no good player's on it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a lot of the players that been here couldn't play football, NO INSTINCT, TOO SMALL, TOO SLOW, and can't tackle a baby

This is straight up a rebuilding year on every front. Most of this team is VERY young in addition to brand new coaches with brand new schemes. I was one of those that was optimistic about winning 10 games but I think going 8-5 would be a success this year. It's a rude awakening that the players and fans needed to be honest. This is the year (and maybe only year) where OU makes changes because the SEC is going to be much more brutal than what we are currently seeing so far.

Well Ou won't go nowhere with a defensive coach that had a record of 6-45 as a coach and then Lebby is junk. All they wanna do is run a 3 man front and allow the Qb to have all day to throw the ball and Ou weak safeties and corners leave guys wide open all over the place and the defense is sooo slow sad when they can't even run down a Qb

Every team is young, particularly big name programs in this new era. What are you talking about? The only time you'll find veteran teams these days, are if they're an Oregon St, Northwestern, Iowa St, Wake Forrest type of program.

Everyone except to much to fast out Oklahoma this is Coach Brent venables first year, old and new players. With all new coaches of course we are going to have mistakes and really bad games. But we will learn how to believe in this new system and work harder we as fans this year need to watch as these players and coaches learn to make it better. All teams have embarrassing games just as bad as Oklahoma did but that failure is going to make them work harder. Give it time and we will see what happens next year. And then people can make their opinions sometimes we got to hit bottom before we grow. Like I said people ask to much to fast especially here in Oklahoma. God bless
