Diwali Dhamaka! I would love subtitles that aren't in Hindi, if anyone can translate, I would be very gratefull. I am here to learn. I know very little about Kali Puja (or is it Pujo?), just that it is traditional in the West of India at Diwali, so I looked it up and got this (I was born and lived in the Netherlands all my life, never been to India. Most of these words and customs are very, very foreign to me). But I decided to make a little shrine for Kali today in my house and join in Diwali. Today I am breaking a 20 day fast, so I needed a celebration anyway and this way it seems to me all of India is celebrating that I eat again :) To me this celebration is nicely exotic and I probably have got everything about it wrong, so forgive me, I mean no disrespect. It's just honest ignorance.. But I'd like to share what beauty I can see (or imagine) in this celebration. I like the wholistic aspect of Maa Kali of including degradation, hunger, death, fire etc in the celebration of life. To me, she is the goddes of entropy, the embodiment of the second law of thermodynamics: entropy (the amount of chaos) in a closed system always increases (and ever since I learned about that in school, I saw the truth in it and I have had the biggest reverence for entropy as the only real opposing force to life, joining us all in this fight against entropy, fungi, virusses, bacteria, animals, plants, living in the enropy-wake of the sun). At least that is what I see in her. And I like the story that without her Rakthabeeja would still be terrorizing everybody :) It's a good thing things don't last forever. It reflects my idea that there might not even be time and space without entropy. The idol of Maa Kali is fascinating too. I love the friendly Kali in the video.. But I also read a lot of descriptions. The fact that she is described as an old woman AND terrible AND beautiful at the same time fascinates me. I am getting older and it is nice to see the beauty in that, to love the unique challenges in that. There seems to be no more inclusive goddess than Kali to me. She appeals to me much more than Lakshmi, who seems to be mostly about temptations, three hands offer temptation, clinging (money, spiritual pride or righteousness and the clinginess and mutual dependence people call love), only one moksha, liberation. I find it hard to trust that. I can see it as a play, as the rules of the game, but not as a truth. Even moksha.. seems to suggest you can be without it. That you can loose your true nature, which is all inclusive, both illusion and truth. Kali is hard to explain to my fellow countrymen, they see terrible things as terrible and anyone who thinks differently as weird. To me, it seems they need a little more inclusiveness in their life. For India, it might be good that she is described as black (and powerfull and beautiful), since lots of people seem to have a problem with darker skin. It's good to note standards of beauty change over time. Here in the Netherlands we used to like fat women, the fatter the better, now, two hundred years later, they need to be extremely skinny, the more sickly looking, the better. Neither makes any sense. There should be only one question: "Do you like who you are, when you are with somebody?" People here in the Netherlands say we live in hard times, which seems weird when I think about poverty in India (and lots of other places). But it's not just that.. We can only see the "good" times because of the "bad" times. The light only because of the dark. It's a distinction we create, that would not be here if we weren't there to create it. So why should there be a preference? It is the interplay of dark and light that allows us to see. Without dark and light, there wouldn't be color. This is how opposites enrich. It is the very existence of good AND bad that allows us to be human beings. If I train myself to not trust any judgement, life isn't bad, it isn't good either. It's just life and that is enough to make each breath a celebration. Because celebrating is when we consciously choose to focus on life and celebrating Maa Kali seems to be making a conscious decision to include ALL of life, birth and death, which seems very wise. Maybe I read too much into it, probably. I like how the song is so happy, it seems to reflect that celebratory aspect..
