Getting swept by the Astros is an enormous improvement over missing the postseason entirely. They ran into a dynastic team and honestly could've won any of the 3 games they didn't. My view is basically that they lacked experience in games like that, which the Astros obviously have a ton of over the last 6 years. In 2/3 games they played against them in the series, the Astros had to stage comebacks late in the games, and the Mariners' pitching staff then matched the best pitching staff in the AL (arguably all of MLB) for 17 innings in game 3. It was probably the most competitive sweep in recent memory.

Yeah. And not only did the Astros have to stage comebacks, but they had to have the literal second-best pure hitter this generation at the plate for them. I feel that the M's put up the greatest fight against the Astros among their 3 opponents. When the defining difference between two was "no pitching answer for Yonder Alonso" and it was still that close, that's crazy close. 4* games, 3 wins (1 doesn't-count tie in the first 9 of that 18-IP game), 4-run total differential.

That had to absolutely fire up the young guys seeing the big dog have that fight!

Thank you so much for making this video. This season has meant so much for myself and hundreds of thousands of other diehard fans. It's definitely due time that our Mariners get some love for what they are building because this team is legitimately a few pieces away from a championship roster. While in the end a sweep is a sweep, look at the way they played the Astros. They were leading Game 1 until the bottom of the 9th and were 1 strike away. G2 they just flat out got beat but then you go to Game 3 in Seattle for the first time in 20 years and it was absolutely incredible. 18 innings of scoreless baseball going back and forth and eventually Jeremy Pena/all the luck going to HOU was just too good. If we make the right moves this team absolutely can beat the Astros in the postseason next year and if we can do that we will win the World Series. I am so, so ready for the next chapter of Seattle Mariners baseball.

@@braytonschafer5606 No there is no way the Mariners were making a deep run with how poorly their bullpen was performing overall in the postseason. The Yankees bullpen was actually solid in the ALCS. Their offense got shut down by the Astros pitching. Mariners ended the season 5-5 in their last 10 with some horrible losses to bad teams. Luis Castillo lost to the As and Royals. He dominated the Blue Jays due to their lineup consisting of 8 right handed batters. Houston has Yordan and Tucker and those two are 2 of the best left handed hitters in the game and in the middle of their order. Yordan and Tucker both hit a home run against Castillo in game 2.

Houston played the Yankees on June 23rd when the Yankees were at their peak and red hot, NY had the best record in baseball and led MLB in every offensive category. The Yankees were the first team in the AL to reach 60 wins. Thats around the time the Astros played them. Houston beat them at home on June 24th, ending a Yankees streak of not having lost a game at home in over a month. That's the same series that Houston pitched a combined no-hitter at Yankee stadium. The Yankees finished the season 50-51 in their last 101 games after a hot start.

That he came back once from his tragic injury (for the unawares, he had a fluke collision at home plate that tore not one, but TWO ligaments in one knee) at all was story-book amazing. He'd literally only just barely started his pro career (short season Rookie ball) and it was already over. He somehow works his way back, builds up strength and durability in that knee, and becomes not only manages to make the Bigs one day but sets an MLB record (most consecutive games with a HR to start career [with 6]) and then decidedly wins Rookie of the Year. Books and movies don't drop that low or rise that high, and yet this was real life. It would jerk tears out of even the most "unemotional" men. And then we find out at the start of the sequel... the knee is injured again. Right now, he sits with another lost season and now traded to another org. Hopefully, there's another storybook ending to this sequel because... Kyle Lewis deserves one.

Great video. One thing I wished you went more in depth about was the Houston series in the ALDS. They may have gotten swept, but they put up far more of a fight than the Yankees did in the ALCS. For the majority of that series, the Mariners were the better team. In the 36 total innings played, the Astros had the lead in just 4. If it weren’t for two crucial swings from Alvarez and one from Pena, it would have been 3-0 Mariners.

Even though they got swept in the end, they were 1 out away from taking Game 1, and just needed 1 run in 17 innings to take Game 3 (though the pitching from both sides so that is a lot easier said than done). Watching 10 months later is weird. 2023 didnt start off as bad, but not as good as expected. Losing Ray and Muñoz was rough. Wong being a major bust. Flexen underperformed and Marco got hurt too. Then summer came. Traded Sewald seemed baffling. Kelenic started MVP caliber, chilled, then kicked the bucket. Castillo, Kirby. Gilbert can be a legendary trio. Now following an 8 game streak, 3 game loss, 8 game streak, followed by a fluke bonk in the head loss, 2023 is shaping up to being an even crazier season! Hey now!

Obviously winning 90 in 2021 made this season slightly less impressive on paper, but that's also a very simple way to look at it. The team in 2021 was the most clutch by a country mile. Fangraphs clutch stat had the 2021 Ms at 8.71 with 2nd place being the Phillies at 3.2. For context the eventual champion Braves had a clutch score of -2.17. That team relied on a lot of luck and timely hits from generally "bad" players. The 2022 team felt like an actual team. I was 2 when they last made the playoffs in 2001 so I grew up only ever knowing failure. No Mariners squad has ever felt more cohesive and together as this group of guys. I'm excited for the future and to see Julio continue to develop.

As a Mariners fan who follows their prospects, there is something I'm begging -- *BEGGING* -- someone to legitimately discuss at some point. That is... Before Opening Day 2022, Julio was indeed the #2 prospect in baseball... *BUT* as a RF who had played a grand total of 49 professional games in CF. In addition, he was skipping AAA ... and only played 35 games in AA. Julio was *NEVER* regarded as a CF. Kelenic had been described as "bat-first CF who will 'eventually' slide to a corner". Julio up until Spring Training 2022 had always been a RF. The most optimistic scouting report on his CF potential was in the "maybe a few games for his first couple seasons". And -- again -- 35 games in AA and 0 in AAA. I'm not going to take away from the #1 ranked, "80-grade" (per Fangraphs) Wander Franco because he deserves it. The note I want to bring up is that his 80-grade has been consistently defined as "SS today with 3B/ CF future and 1B/ COF bat". In other words, a defender who won't "hurt" a team defensively at SS and whallop a baseball like a 1B, LF, or RF should (math-wise, think "no worse than -5 at SS, but 110+ wRC+ as a rookie). And he absolutely showed that (average -- maybe even good -- at SS and a 116 wRC+). This is about the change in Julio that occurred in the 2021-2022 off-season. At the end of 2021, Julio was "above-average corner glove, but has zero chance at starting up-the-middle and much higher potential than normal COF bat". He was earnestly projected to be a fantastic hitter from Day -1, but was never remotely thought of as "CF". He was "fast for COF, but not 'CF fast'". Absolutely no one would say he'd be one of the fastest in the game. And then everything changed by Opening Day, 2022. I really -- truly -- wish I could still pull up his pre-2022 BaseballSavant reports to compare to the currents, but MiL reports are deeper to pull out. Undoubtedly, though, the change was unfathomable. He went from middling sprint speed numbers (slightly above MLB average; around average for his young age) to elite (97th percentile; 15th-ranked in MLB of the 582 listed on Baseball Savant). From a "RF-forever" teenager to "Above-average... maybe-really-good CF until... uh... his retirement?"... In a single offseason. This doesn't happen. Never certainly in the Statcast Era and only very rarely in the "old" days we didn't have modern training and measuring methods did a player move this drastically *UP* the defense spectrum. IF OF switches are one thing (wildly different skills), but the fundamental skills within those spectra are almost entirely defined by near-MLB. Then there was Julio. He changed from #2-prospect-in-all-of-baseball-level RF (because of his bat and bat alone) and then added to his defense and speed skill enough to make him an above-average CF. From there, I've been trying to ask of those who know more than I do: "What would Julio's prospect grade had been if he'd actually been as good as he was on Opening Day 2022?" Because... well... he wasn't as good. He was certainly not "bad". He wasn't even so "low" ranked as "very good". Fangraphs had him as a 65-grade RF prospect and ranked him #3 in their Top-100 2022 Graduates and (direct quote from FanGraphs 'The Board' report on him) "... the highest-ranked corner bat on [the] list". From there, I have two closing statements: 1. If Julio had been a CF all along, I have no doubts that he'd have been regarded a "super prospect". Maybe not quite Wander Franco, but would have indeed been beaten Rutschman in the prospect rankings 2. That tells me that a healthy Houston team is not all that far ahead of Seattle, certainly not as far ahead as far too many Houston fanatics want to believe they are. And Seattle has a payroll of $88 million going into next year. Their needs are a legitimate lefty in the back end of the bullpen, a second basemen, and a left-handed or switch hitting power bat for either left field or DH. If they jump in the Judge sweepstakes, then he takes over left field and Winker becomes your regular DH Haggerty becomes Mr Everyposition and then you have to ask whether you want Trammell, Kelenic or Haniger to play right field next year. Haniger is set for free agency if Seattle doesn't extend him in the off-season. If you don't, your choices are Haggerty, Kelenic or Trammell. Those are also your choices to play center when you want to give Julio a day off. This is all assuming that Kyle Lewis never becomes the guy he once was. He will never roam center again, but he might be able to play left one day, or he might get traded. But Seattle also has a shot at Ohtani as a free agent in 2023-2024 off-season if they don't land Judge this year. Seattle is on his short list. So the future looks bright for Seattle, and they are quickly becoming a reasonably good destination for top talent, as long as that top talent has the correct mental makeup that is able to put team first. If you are a superstar that won't bunt when you are told to, then you will not fit here. Julio has more than one sacrifice bunt this year. He has sacrifice flies. He steals bases, playing small ball when the occasion calls for it. Too many of the superstar players won't give their personal glory up for the team. Ken Griffey Jr did. He would have made 700 homers easily had he not played the team first game that Lou required of his players. That is why I was glad Soto was really not a serious target. Yes, he is a great player, but he plays the game more for him than the team.

But at the same time, look at the Braves. They may have lost in the ALDS, but they've locked up some great talent long term and it started with Acuña. He may have had injury problems, but he's worth it.
