Great music selection and editing for the dunes of hell, transmits the paranoia of riding such stuff in the dark for the first time. Thanks!

Thank you.. that's what I was trying to relay.. everything looked the same, no points of reference, deep soft sand, fine dust, frustration.. It was not fun in the dark

Too bad you didn't have more time. There are some really cool caves just south of Craters of the Moon. I'm sure you went right by a couple of them.

Nothing like riding along a barbed wire fence at night in the sand.😮

That rim drop is sketchy in the daylight. Im not doing it in the dark. You should have sat down for an hour and had a burger at pickles place.
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
I would have loved to had an hour of spare time to wait for daylight.. but I had about another 250 miles of unknown terrain to navigate. That was just one of the many sketchy situations that you find yourself in on the TOI.. you just have to work through it and move on.

Good watch. Felt sorry that you didnt get to look around much and had to push.

This is a real downside to the event, the long days make for high pressure to keep moving and you don't really get to experience the environment you are passing through.

Can you make a video on the bike setup? Curious on the front light looks like plenty of light for night riding

I cover the bike build in the first video, Day 1 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h33SiYKihKdnlac The lights I used were fantastic. Highly recommend them. Diode Dynamics S1 I believe, with a clear flood lens.

You didn’t happen to call in that dead Bull Moose did you? That could have been a poaching case
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
I did not, didn't think about anything like that. It did seem odd, that such a decent looking moose had just dropped dead right there. But my mind was mush at the moment, so there's that. That's horrible if people do that out there. :-(

@@briangoss yeah I can imagine what it was like on the exhaustion level! It’s unfortunate, but with so many people from out of state that came to Idaho now for hunting, there’s been a lot more poaching incidents or out of season hunting violations. Awesome videos and maybe someday I can muster up the resources to do the Tour also! Currently just a recreational and hunter riding single track. Born and raised in the Idaho Mountains.

Enjoyin your vids! Got a question....16:30 - what bike lift strap do ya have on your bike? i've got a 2022 KTM 500 EXC and bought a Tugger strap (for when I'm carrying luggage and cant get ahold of the bike iteself) but am not thrilled with how it is supposed to be bolted to the subframe mount bolts and wrapped around the rear number plates. Thanks!
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
i have a tugger strap also, and with Husqvarna, it is a composite subframe, so i didn't want to drill into that. I ended up just looping the strap through the frame under the seat, and putting a bolt through the two end holes. worked just fine for me.
@Dmac-CO

@@briangoss Thanks for the reply Brian! I tried looping mine just under the seat, but that didn't look like enuf support....I like your idea of incorporating the frame too! Will give it a try!

Great video, curious if and how you maintained the bike while putting so many miles on it in a short amount of time? Did you do oil changes? Thanks for the help.

Appreciate it.. thank you. I did an oil change on Day 2 when i got a new tire. There are a few bike shops along the way.. Day 2, 3, 5 & 8 where you can purchase tires, oil and equipment as needed. they all are very supportive or riders on the route.

what maps are you using on the Montana? Ive got one and can't get it to navigate single track for me.
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
I upgraded the gps base mapping with a more detailed topo map. the stock maps that come on the GPS are garbage. Garmin knows everyone will use custom, detailed mapping for their location so they don't include any. For the TOI, I also uploaded custom maps with details and features not available on your standard topo basemap. ie MVUM trails etc.. this is much more complicated process. The key thing i think you are looking for is "routable" basemaps. from your comment it sounds like you want to specify a destination and have the GPS map out a route.. sort of like google maps etc. this is where you will need a "routeable" basemap. not all of them are. check out the website GPSFileDepot a free source for gps maps, they will have an option for you.
@jordanheimer7829

Thanks!@@briangoss my ideal situation would be to have a set of maps that included the MVUM data, I don't necessarily need it to route for me but would be nice to be able to follow me along on the routes if possible. Really, I am just trying to figure out how to put the MVUM data on the the unit.
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
I used Caltopo to create custom maps, which had the MVUM's layer turned on. depending on your need that could be a simple or highly involved effort. One simple, alternate solution is an app on your cell phone. Avenza Maps allows you to download and save electronic versions of the paper MVUM maps. These are geolocated on the phone, so while in the field, you can open the map and see your location on the map. this is a great option for people use to using the traditional paper maps in the past. this is also all free, and the maps are free to download from the USFS. google search: USFS avenza maps

Why two GPS units?
@briangoss
@briangoss Жыл бұрын
Backup and redundancy. I also used one for a larger view, zoomed out. For the scale and complexity of the navigation, you really need to have 2 good GPS devices and one backup, like a phone or something.
