Wouldn't it be perfect if they tweak the engine just enough and 1 or 2 extra gears for a little more power and fuel economy. Other minor improvements could be led lights, better camera resolution. Many of us fear new 4R will have touch screen controls and removed low range selector lever. A fully operational smart cruise is a must, it is so unnerving not knowing whether traffic speed will drop below 25 and all of a sudden, I will have to brake myself or otherwise rear-end someone.

no idea why theres sooo many haters in these comments. the 4runner is easily one of the best off-roading SUVs you can buy right now. you buy other SUVs at markup and after 3 years you'd be lucky to get half of the original MSRP for it. with a 4runner, you buy it at 55k and 3 years later its still within 20k of msrp, even after taking it off-road and beating the piss out of it, because the thing doesn't break. what a lot of people arent grasping here is the reliability, modularity, and versatility of these vehicles. there's not much else like it on the market right now. toyota's philosophy with the 4runner is if it ain't broke don't fix it, and it's obviously paying off because the 4runner sold like hot-cakes in 2021, at 144k units sold, most successful year for the car yet.

I love mine. Wanted a GX460 Premium Plus for quite a while. Decided, if I could get a Pro for msrp and get good equity out of my trade I’d go for it. Only took 2 weeks of calling around within 100 miles of me. Constantly being told, “yes sir msrp! Next day: Actually…it’s gonna be a $5k bump bud., no thanks.” I really wanted white or magnetic grey but decided to take a leap with Lime Rush (no choice). Had seen a couple in person but not up close. Bought on a Friday delivered on Monday. After living with it since Feb. It makes me smile every time I see it. I love the attention it gets and it really goes well with the capability of the vehicle. The color is very pearlescent like and has many shades in all types of lighting. The exhaust drone was horrendous at first, I barely notice it now. It rides identical to a current year GX with the exception the GX has amazing handling in corners with KDSS keeping body roll a minimum. Fuel economy? I don’t do much highway driving (65+ mph) the highway to my work has about 6 large hills over 10 miles. I found I’d only get about 16.5 mpg throughout the week. Driving flatter backroads at 55-60ish mph I maintain 18.5 avg mpg per tank, on 93 octane. Yes, I spend the extra $9-$10 per fill up on 93. “To each my own”, recommends 87+ “or higher” still has a 10:1 compression ratio and my 2 cents it just has way better power and slightly better mpg vs 87 regular and 89 mid grade. I don’t find my transmission to be gear hunting that much I feel reminded of the older tcu style it just goes, upshifts when it should it’ll even downshift when I let off the throttle and are coasting downhill. It has excellent deceleration in the drivetrain, easy to go easy on brakes. If I’m not mistaking I’d almost think the tcu is semi adaptive to your driving style. 2900 miles and no complaints about lack of power or gear hunting.

Part of me loves that they keep this generation around so long to keep it relatively affordable, but it could really use an update at this point. FoTo Realistic When you compare them to other SUVs for sale on the market, yes, they are more affordable. For example, a new 4Runner starts at 37,605 whereas a new Tahoe starts at $50,500. So yes, they are affordable compared to the competition.

@@SmallBrickWall A 4Runner TRD Pro is 53K MSRP, makes Tahoe look like a bargain. You can't get a 4x4 4Runner for under 40K, not without some OFF-Road systems for under 45K. What makes 4Runners expensive is how basic and cheap the interiors are compared to modern vehicles. A german suv would seem like a spaceship compared to a 4runner. So paying 60K for super fake leather, cheap plastic and no luxury features is a lot. Hell a GX460 is miles ahead in terms of luxury on the same platform. @@GXMAN16 Lol that's exactly why I didn't go with any of the Lexus vehicles. I just can't get over the soccer mom look. The Raptor was amazing but I was moving to a big city and just couldn't live with a vehicle that size. The 4Runner is a much more reasonable choice. I do miss the power from the Raptor for sure but the Pedal Commander kind of solves that problem in the 4Runner. I actually take the opposite point of view of what you said. I think a lot of ppl buy the 4Runner because of its ancient but reliable drivetrain. In my opinion, until the supposedly new turbo 4 cylinder engine & transmission combo can prove its reliability, this 5th gen 4Runner will still hold its value pretty well. Ultimately who cares lol. I didn't buy this vehicle to let it sit in the garage to sell later. I bought it to drive and I'm gonna drive the crap out of it 😁

For 2024 I want same 4R but with 6 or 8 speed, a little bit more power and economy, better cameras with identical button layout. I fear they will put big screen and remove buttons, knobs, and 4H 4L selector lever. A fully functional radar cruise would be great, what's the point if I have to be on watch for speed to drop below 25 mph and stop manually. I drove my friends Camry and it is so stressful drive knowing that I may have to suddenly take control of braking below 25.

God... all I’m asking for is for Toyota to make these in a Manual so I don’t have to pick between a Jeep or a Bronco

55 thousand for this thing is bananas when you can get the Everglades Bronco for less. Toyota reliability will always sell though.

I think these still sell well because of their reliability, and its like an older suv, and seems less complex than the shitboxes automakers spit out these days. Good old fashion v6 auto body on frame SUV. And it has a normal size infotainment screen, not an 80 inch TV. Its just such a good vehicle
@John-ki7zn2 жыл бұрын
They sell well because their fashionable. My neighbor bought one (TRD Pro), is kept in the garage all day, never sees any offroad. 4Runners have always been like this.

@@John-ki7zn Obviously you’re too blind to see the thousands of videos of those that take it on off road adventures. You’re confusing yourself with LAND ROVER that you rarely see. 😜😂

I actually think this things biggest competition is the tacoma, tundra and mabe the seq. bronco/wrangler buyers won't be interested. And a defender buyer would look at a heinous limited and laugh at the driving dynamics and mitsubishi like interior. I didnt realize how much freakin weight the 4runner gained (600+lbs) when the 5th gen was introduced made the engine update of the archaic drivetrain.
@GXMAN162 жыл бұрын
Natural competition is the Bronco, the Wrangler and maybe some small Land Rover. The biggest edge the 4Runner has is that it will run forever, you can comfortably drive it past the warranty period into some 6 digits. But if you only own one for 3-4 years or less, then it doesn't matter, buy whatever it is that you fance, all body on frame and capable off roaders with some gimmicky bullshit attached.

Chiming on the gear hunting...my 18 wants to live in 4th gear on the highway at like 3.2k rpm. I couldn't imagine it with that exhaust

I do miss the grab handles in the 4th gens on all four sides of the vehicle. Only the shotgun seat gets a handle to assist in getting in for the 5th gens now.

Good Review..... i have one Red TRD Offroad Platinum 2022. these are the cons : 16 MPG . Noise during drive on Highways. Need a cable USB for connect the Android Auto and iPhone. USB Connector located near the knee. Min Low cruise system 28 Milles. Abrupt Disconnect Cruiser System under 28 miles Useless Wifi in Audio System with AT&T without good apps and improvementas. Strange behavior on sudden braking, no stability. Useless Eco Graphics in system audio. Very large scale for low fuel efficiency. Useless Eco Graphcs in dashboard Control. It doesn't have a glasses holder. does not have remote start. TOYOTA should provide the best USB cable to ensure phone connectivity

I do hate the droning of the TRD exhaust. I may change it out later this year. I average about 15 mpg before my K&N drop in filter, I get 16 mpg now living in the southeast.
