Great explanation. In theory the ball weight lost to the tow vehicle can be put back in the van as there is room with GCM. That is assuming axle weighs allow. If pulled onto a weigh bridge they weigh axles and add them up for vehicle and van and total together.

Ah no. Just because it can tow 3.5t, doesn't mean you should. The laws on towing in Australia are just plain crazy, we're one of the few countries in the world that allow the trailer to be heavier than the prime mover. Basic physics will tell you that towing something as heavy 3.5t with only a 3t landcruiser, is a bad idea. Look it up people! I always use 85% of the prime movers GVM to know what is a safe towing limit. So 85% of the gvm of a 300series is 2.7t, this should be the absolute maximum towing capacity. Even then, you can still be overloaded if you have too many accessories and gear in the landcruiser. And before thinking about a GVM upgrade, you should consider how much you value your new car warranty? Because, Toyota won't cover a new engine, gearbox or anything in the drivetrain if you have a GVM upgrade. And nor should they, because you're now operating the vehicle outside the manufacturers maximum limits.

Not correct about new car warranty , they must prove it was caused by the upgrade and if they can with Lovells upgrade for example they will honour the warranty

@@tjpauto Yeah, and good luck with that! Wow, you people are delusional if you think that you'd win in court. 😆

@@SteveBurns80 didn’t mention the courts. I suggest you do some research , probably start on the lovells site and look up their warranty and the section in regards to oe warranty. ( that’s specific to them not other upgrades) as not every seller of upgrades goes through the same process and gets extra testing and documentation done that’s not required.

@@tjpauto It has nothing to do with the any of the after market upgrades or the actual load. It's the fact that you've increasing the potential load capacity, outside of what the manufacturers specified. Yeah, it won't effect all of your warranty, parts that are unrelated to load carrying will still be covered, but If a chassis, engine or transmission failure occurs and the manufacturer sees that the vehicle has had GVM upgrade, then they have every right to pin it on the gvm upgrade, "operating outside of the manufacturer specifications" It's the same as if you failed to get your vehicle serviced on time. You just can't do this and expect them to cover a chassis, engine or transmission. And trust me, it's easy for a manufacturer to prove the cause of failure. The only time you might receive warranty, is if the failure happened to be a known defect or an actual manufacturing fault. But even then, would you really want to argue the toss, against a big car company that has already got the upper hand? And let's face it, most drivetrain failures are caused by user abuse. I'm all for upgrading the suspension ect, and I think GVM upgrades aren't a bad solution in all situations. However, people must be made aware of the realities when talking about new car warranty.

Your comments are ignorant and simply wrong. The simplistic view that you shouldn't tow anything heavier than the towing vehicle is utterly wrong and simplistic. What actually matters is the design of both the towing vehicle and the vehicle being towed. And this includes many factors. Wheel base where the weight actually is e.g. down low up high or at the ends. The type of trailer matters. Is the braking system a fully integrated one? I used to tow a 31 foot yacht on a tri axle trailer that had dropped independent suspension half the weight was right over the leading axles. With sensor braking system this thing tracked like a train and I could and did regularly tow over mountain roads and highways. Trailer sway was impossible despite its weight. A badly setup 16 foot fishing boat or light caravan will however sway and you see such Muppets regularly on the Newcastle freeway. Often upside down. It isn't about the weight. It's the whole setup that matters. Just look at a semi hauling 50 ton!
