2023 #17 Big Obsidian Flow

This hike/walk is a short interpretive trail in Newberry Caldera, near Paulina Lake in central Oregon. This lava flow was deposited about 1300 years ago, and was most likely observed by the indigenous peoples living in the area. The flow was thick and flowed very slowly, resulting in the significant thickness of the flow. A series of metal stairs climbs up onto the flow, and a short loop trail.

Really cool interpretive trail! The obsidian and lava mix is amazing- really ice to see it up close, thanks! It's hard to think what it would have been like to see the slow moving flow burning everything in it's path I guess, like the lava flows in Hawaii. It's impressive to see all the green trees now, not to far away. Great sunshine!! 👍👍

I've had an interest in volcanism since Mt. St. Helens erupted. Central Oregon is absolutely amazing when it comes to this. I wish that I was able to spend more time there.

@@ttirremttocs Yes, Mount St. Helen’s sure was impressive! I hope you get to go back- we’ve hiked a few trails by Smith Rock, would love to hike more near there- Oregon and Washington have so much to see!

This is so cool. This summer i got to visit glass Mt in cali. Its much much bigger. Has some amazing views as well. Next time i run thru bend ill stop here w my kiddos.

I was unfamiliar until I looked it up. Ive done White Mountain Peak and explored Mono Lake. I might have to check this out on a future trip. Thanks!
