I took our Atto 3 onto a motorway a couple of days ago doing 110km/h for the first time since getting the car last month. I agree that the cabin was so quiet with hardly any wind noise at highway speed. Very impressed that BYD achieved this level of quietness which I've only experienced in a Lexus before. When we went downhill towards Thirroul Beach, I saw the regen brake pulling -90kw for a split second when I was using the brake pedal. That's the highest I've seen so far.

Hi Tom, Top power for Atto 3 has actually been recorded as 167kw on momentary boost (also on drag mode). The handling of the Atto 3 has been good, it's a little floaty but pretty confident on tight roads. First thing I did to my Atto 3 is swap the tyres for Continental 235s which offer a lot more grip on the limit and seem quieter. For me the Atto 3 and Tesla Model Y were the only options for me as I own a giant dog. The Atto 3 won out because its $30k cheaper but doesn't feel $30k cheaper than a Tesla.

I think for the money the BYD extended range is currently the best value EV in Australia. I’m sure the model 3 and Y are better cars but they are over $20,000 extra. Plus I really prefer to have the extra dashboard near the steering wheel.

@@mr260z3 While you are mostly right even with worse tires, less automation, less performance, less efficiency, and higher servicing costs. It is still incredibly great value and even though I own a Model Y it's my go to recommendation for more budget constrained people looking to get an EV.

@@glenisold79 Funny, no one ever complained about the original Mini Cooper. It had a centre mounted instrument cluster and was one of the most popular cars ever built. Yet suddenly with Tesla it's OMG, I can't cope with not having the speed right in front of me. I originally thought when I got mine, I'd fit a 3rd party screen behind the wheel but it really isn't necessary. The option's there if you want it though. BYD need it because the speed is not displayed in the centre screen.

Good info, thanks! We've had ours for 3 weeks now. I have found that when the Active [Tom] Cruise Control is running, it seems to keep those regen numbers lower. Possibly because when I'm driving I use more tiny bursts of acceleration to maintain speed. Especially with the regen set to high. Love the car though. Having seen photos and videos of the BYD Seal, I still prefer the look of the Atto 3 interior.

Having now driven the Atto3 on a number of long trips and carefilly measured power use, the practical range from 100% is 340-350km (keeping below 100kmh) including a comfortable buffer. I estimate the drop dead range (normal highway driving below speed limit) is about 410-420km. If you hypermiled it at maximum range speed (75kmh) in still air on flat terrain, I estimate 460-480 km drop dead range would be possible. Running at above 100kmh the achievable range drops very quickly the faster you go.

Will be interested to see how the Blade battery range drops off with time. I have hired or done test drives on Kona EV, Polestar, Jaguar. Love HUD in BYD although the graphics for my old eyes are hard to read. That needs improvement. Hate that Tesla don’t have HUD. Like BYD chiming indicator. Thanks, Tommy! Very nice film. What do I think? About Atto 3? As from 25. 11.22 - I'm driving it, with 5000 clicks on the clock so far, and loving every bit of it. Even the tyres. They are OK for my driving, admittedly I'm not much into racing them. I did notice the type of regen it poses,--- and I can only tell You -- I like it like that. What do I like the most? Interior of it. Dislikes? -- not a single one! Mixed driving? I'm getting that 420 km. Freeway? 350 km. --- and wind strength has got a lot to do with this. Have a Happy New Year Tom. Thanks for another great video. Not sure why people would think regen was never part of the pedal braking. My Prius has done this since early 2000s. I have an Atto 3 on order and the suspension is my biggest worry. I found it very soft with little dampening at speed and over small bumps so it bounces along the road but around bends I could live with it. Not sure whether to cancel the order yet. Wish BYD would do a better suspension tune for the Australian market.

Thank you for the informative video's especially on the Atto 3. I'm hoping BYD will update the software for estimated range relative to the WLTP cycle rather than the Chinese cycle (CLTC l believe) so it shows 420km rather than 480km at 100%. I heard colleges get caught out with incorrect range left. Cheers

Hey there Tom, thanks for a series of nice reviews. I'm actually a bit of a fan of the Batman tyres, they're certainly quiet, steer well and are good in the wet. Initially the car does feel that it may be lacking just a little grip but when I started thinking it through, at 1700kg and on 215s the Atto 3 is actually somewhat under-tyred for such a heavy vehicle. The Tesla Y is quite similar in weight yet that runs on 255s and I think this is a much more appropriate width. When my OEM tyres are up for replacement I will look at what's available in the Batman range, maybe see if they do a 235-50 and give that a try. Speaking of the Tesla Y I have had a pretty long drive of a new one of those and frankly am happy to have chosen the Atto 3 which I feel is a nicer overall drive, steers better, is quieter on our Kiwi roads, and more intuitive than the Y with it's minimalist control layout. Aesthetically, I feel that Tesla have taken the nice Model 3 shape and turned it into a poorly proportioned hunchback. Keep up the good reviews.

Thanks Tom...another great video. This is a good road to test on with all the bends and such, probably wouldn't want too be much higher a speed limit anyway looking at the type of road it is. Mind you there is a very windy road in Tasmania and it's a main highway that is rated at 100km/h for a lot of it and it's crazy but a good road to test a car on. You should do a headlight test on this road, it would be nice and dark I would imagine for testing the headlights on at night. The Atto 3 is on the top of my list as it's far more affordable than the Model Y, like $20k at least under the Y's pricing, and once my current Novated Lease expires it could be a red Atto 3 replacing my current classic Ioniq 28.

I have taken my Atto 3 on the Putty Rd to just past the Colo River several times. I was happy with the regen in eco mode and as you saw the break pedal initially does regen. I get up to a max regen of about -30kW perhaps higher (watching the road is more important then noting the max regen). I was not pushing the speed on the corners, but did not think it comfortably took them as fast as in my 98 Camry. However, I had one passenger and the back filled with camping equipment. I am on the stock tires.

My experience so far almost identical to yours. Handles OK for a compact SUV, def a bit floaty after you get above 80km/h. Tyres so far not a problem but haven't driven in really wet conditions for an extended period. Judging by other reports they don't fare well in the wet. Personally I don't like the regen setup. The blended brake feels spongy and you're never quite sure when the friction brake is going to kick in. I kinda hope they can implement much higher regen when taking your foot off the accelerator via software. Apart from that I think it's an excellent value EV. Sure, I much prefer our Model 3 but I can't seem to get it off the wife 😂

I often wonder if a regen braking recoup standard might be set by driving down the Blue Mountains from Katoomba to Emu Plains, and seeing how many kms are gained into the battery in the process. That could then be applied to different models of EVs to see which one performed best. I know there was a similar test done in Norway I believe where a Tesla gained an incredible amount from regen braking all the way down from the top of a fjord to the bottom. Maybe we could do that here! Another possible location to set a standard might be going down the Illawarra Escarpment which is steeper than the Blue Mountains run but shorter. My Prius battery shows full within only a few hundred metres heading down to the Gong, the rest being wasted.

Thanks Tom, I like your review, it is somewhat helpful, but there are still some points I would like clarified about one-pedal driving. I recently drove a new Tesla Model 3 (March 2023), and I currently drive a Toyota Camry Hybrid (2019). I'm a rideshare driver so I'm doing between 180km to 350km each day (1,500+km per week), and I will be 69 this year. One of things I love about my Camry is that I can ease off with my right foot and let the car glide along while I am doing suburban driving. Although the regen braking is there, it is minimal until I hit the friction brake. The Camry Hybrid is the best car I have ever driven for glide driving. It requires very little pressure on the accelerator, and combined with using my left foot for braking I can often rest my right leg. By comparison, the Tesla Model 3 was awful to drive. The harsh regen braking required constant control of the accelerator, with stop lights being the only opportunity to rest my leg. This very quickly made my right leg tired. The Tesla is a vehicle I could only drive for 1 hour in day, not 10 to 12 hours. I am wondering if the BYD is in this category of one-pedal accelerator/regen-braking? Or, is it more like the Camry Hybrid? Thanks again, David
@LudicrousFeed
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Thank David for sharing your experience. With the Model 3 you can reduce the strength of the regen by switching the setting the low rather than standard - that makes it more like the BYD Atto 3 which imo is similar to the Camry regen experience (which I have hired previously) Hope that helps

While the Model Y is good and Tesla is so far ahead of the rest when it comes to technology the price is the main barrier for me to get a Model Y and that everything is done on the one screen in the car and that has always been the one thing that has concerned me because if that screen dies I can't drive the Tesla. Also I do like the look of the Atto 3 over the Model Y and I'm getting used to the inside design of the Atto 3 the more reviews I watch. One question I have for the Atto 3 is that a while ago EV Direct made it compulsory to pay round $1,340 for services on the car for the warranty to stay valid, is that still the case or did EV Direct reverse that decision. There was alot of backlash for EV Direct doing this and I have not heard if they reversed their decision on this. It is also disappointing that EV Direct recently increased the price of the Atto 3 as that just makes it harder for us to buy it especially in the current economic time when the cost of living is going up. I'm super keen to buy an EV and once I have been to the Fully Charged Live event in March, and all going to plan, I intend to place an order for my first EV. Keep up the great work Tom we appreciate all the information you provide.

Standard Atto Tyres are fine in the dry, so far I haven’t done much wet weather driving. The car being front wheel drive and torquey obviously works the front tyres hard, so care is needed in low traction situations. Ride is quiet smooth and compliant yup even bit floating, but cornering is still pleasantly planted and capable some better tyres would improve this further but hey it’s no sports car 😁🤙

It has V2L vía included adaptor. You can power appliances but not the entire home. This vehicle is the extended range variant and has a 60kWh battery capacity. How long it takes to charge depends on your supply. With a home wall charger it will take about 10 hours. At a DC charger, about 45-60 mins

Doesn't one pedal driving inherently mean strong regen is used? The lack of one pedal driving generally means the regen is less and mechanical brakes need to be used for stopping.

That’s what I previously thought too. However in the Atto 3, when you physically press the brake pedal, regen braking occurs first and only if needed, the friction brakes kick in. I’ve seen numbers go as low as -65kW when pressing the physical brake pedal

Always taken with a healthy dose of skepticism when a reviewer is "lent" a car to review. We should give more weight to the review of real owners for obvious reasons.

@@LudicrousFeed An individual who owns the vehicle is independent while an influencer who has been "lent" a car to reviewed could be influenced by the entity who provide the aforementioned vehicle. That is of course if they are interested in continuing the relationship with that entity. Nothing more valuable than an actual owner review IMO. In the past year, we have seen a landslide of negative owner reviews for Mach-e, Lightnings, Hummer EV and ID4s. That is telling for me. The common threads appear to be around software and lack of experience and knowledge around service. Generally a bad owner experience.

For this particular BYD Atto 3 video, I wanted to show the HUD behind the steering wheel. I have a camera mounted above my head. If I sat in my usual, more comfortable, driving position with my elbows slightly bent, my head would compromise your view of the display hence why I sat further back. If I mounted my camera on my chest or head it would not be safe nor would the footage be stable. Thoughts?

Great questions - Regen: "Regenerative braking" simply put is an EV's ability to capture kinetic energy back into the battery when the car is braking. Essentially you're adding charge/range back into the car's battery each time it slows down. The car does this automatically. - Negative power: watch the video again, when the kWs go negative, it means regenerative braking is active therefore range/charge is being added into the car's battery. It makes for more efficient driving compared to an ICE (internal combustion engine) car - Friction braking is 'normal' braking: this is what occurs in ICE car usually. When you press the brake pedal, the physical brakes and pads slow the wheels of the cars down and that kinetic energy is lost to heat in the process. As opposed to EV regenerative braking, when the braking force is captured as kinetic energy and added as charge/range into the main car battery making for more efficient driving - The 'mistake' I mentioned at the start of the video was in reference to an earlier Atto 3 video I produced in 2022 whereby I mistakenly thought that when the brake pedal was pressed, the car would use friction brakes first. But now I know that it actually uses regen braking first when the brake pedal is pressed and it is a blended braking system whereby it will only use friction brakes if there is not enough regenerative forces to slow the car down. I hope all this makes sense. The music I use at the end is: 'Sunshine' by Simon Jomphe Lepine
