Quick tip: squash vine borers AND squash beetles hate peppermint. Make up a quick solution of about a quart of water, a squirt of castile soap, and maybe 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint essential oil and spray heavily around the plant base, then lighter on the underside of leaves, as well as anywhere that’s been pruned. Apparently (ie my understanding is) any cut or damage sends out a scent that those nasty critters can’t resist. The smell of peppermint masks it and deters them. Works well for me!!

I'm so excited about your spaghetti squash Heather, they all look so lovely. Last year November 7th we ended up harvesting a speckled pup pumpkin and I harvested with the recommendation that I received from a gentleman who was creating a KZbin concerning longevity of pumpkins for long-term storage. So this gentleman recommended that when the pumpkin is ready to harvest then he will take 10 in from the left side of the vine and 10 in from the right side of the vine after of course it's ready and the curlicue is all dried up - snip it, bring it inside and once the sections are completely dried your pumpkin is good for long-term. So we still have a pumpkin that we were experimenting with from last year on the counter and I'm pretty excited cuz we are going to tear into it in November .... I might actually do it the last day of November just to see if we could go beyond that year mark. It is solid still, it's looking good as a matter of fact believe it or not he's starting to get a slight orange tint on the outside after all these months LOL. Mind you the temperature in my house is anywhere from 68 to 70. And we store them on the counter of the kitchen or in the computer room which is the second coldest room of house. But I thought it was a very cool experiment this gentleman did and for the life of me I cannot recall his name or the Vlog but I remember that and I think that would be just an amazing way of keeping your pumpkins for the Long Haul. Wanted to share with y'all. I have yet to grow spaghetti squash that's why I was so excited cuz it's one of our favorites.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead Жыл бұрын
That's VERY interesting!! Do you leave the whole dried vine section on it or trim it down later on? We have one Tromboncino inside still from November and I've thought about leaving it alone and seeing what it does! My Amish friend said it will probably just all dry out from the inside out, which makes sense!
@jessicapabon2105
@jessicapabon2105 Жыл бұрын
@@SageandStoneHomestead I did. I left a whole dried Vine section so that 10-inch section that was cut shriveled-up to like less than 2 inches lol. Going to be so interesting opening it up. I told my sister we're going to make some pies with that! Hahahahaha. It'll be an amazing experiment if it is preserved and stay preserved. According to that guy also I remember him saying that he was single and he had planted quite a few variety of squash glass pumpkins and that he was going to have a quite a few for the winter and Beyond. And I think one of the ones he was mentioning was the spaghetti squash as well so it would be interesting to drive the same experiment on every single variety that I can get my hands on that I can only grow them one at a time LOL maybe two at a time hahaha

LOVE the secret hiding place in the birdhouse gourd area. I remember the first time I grew yellow/low-acid tomatoes (in 1982!). I didn't KNOW they were supposed to be yellow. Just an FYI since y’all like green beans alot: Roma bush green beans produce well in zone 7 for me. No bug damage. No rust. And even the larger beans have no strings, great taste and very productive. Kentucky blue pole and Jade did well too with no strings. I’m only growing Roma next year. So good. Grew some Red Snapper tomatoes from Hoss Tools. Big, productive and tasty. 😊

Lovely harvests again today, Heather! A bit sad about the little watermelons, though (Sugar Baby, I think?). We grew a small(ish) watermelon variety last year called Mini Love that produced well for us in our raised bed garden. We did not trellis them, though and I imagine even their "small" fruits would have needed extra support if trellised. This year, though, we ventured into larger watermelons in our raised bed garden and have enjoyed them - Sangria variety is not what I would call a heavy producer in numbers, but the two we have harvested so far averaged over 16 pounds each and we have three or four vines stuck in a 16 foot by 4 foot raised garden bed. We are new to growing watermelons and are trying a different variety each year to see what grows best for us and has the flavor our family likes the most. We are also trying to lean more towards heirloom or stable hybrid varieties we might be able to regrow from saved seeds to save on our "seed buying addiction"! 😉

When I could still order from Baker Creek, I bought Brad Gate's Blue Berries, and Blue Gold Berries, because I'd seen a lot of good reviews about flavour for them. Nope. We don't like them, and they got hit super early by Blight in my garden. However, Barry's Crazy Cherry is our favourite! I'm not a raw Tomato fan, but really like this one. I have quite a few of his others that do well in my garden too, but if I even moved, I'd give the first two another go, just to see if they liked the conditions better than this garden.
