Yup, this happened. Pan Hongshen from Guangzhou Sports Institute showed up in his best Guanyu outfit and competed in Pudao/Guandao! And he got 2nd place!

When Guanyu died on battlefield, his warhorse named "scarlet hare" just stood next to Guanyu body and refused to go. Cao cao tried to take the horse, but scarlet hare refused to go with anyone and refused to eat till it died

Guanyu didn't die on battlefield but beheaded after being captured.

It was Sun Quan. And the horse was given to a Wu General Ma Zhong as a reward (The Green Dragon was given to another general Pan Zhang). Ma Zhong also fatally wounded Huang Zhong in the battle, but two turncoats killed him after the battle and tried surrendering to Shu. Too bad for them, Liu Bei was having none of it (they also surrendered to Wu to save their own asses after Guan Yu threatened them with capital punishment) and got Guan Xing to behead them both. As for Pan Zhang, during a chance encounter with Guan Xing where they took shelter in a hut, Pan Zhang was stunned by Guan Yu's ghost and killed by Xing. The weapon was thus reclaimed.

@@leondee918 Nah, that was his other sworn brother Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei's brutish and unreasonable nature makes him a terrible superior to work with. His alcohol addiction, hot temper and recklessness got him in trouble back in Lu Bu's days when the latter sought asylum under Liu Bei. Even though Guan Yu can put his resentment aside for the sake of a common goal, Zhang Fei didn't. He got drunk and abused Lu Bu's henchman and gave Lu Bu a pretext to take XuZhou. Too bad for him, this made him unpopular, and he was assassinated when his deadlines proved impossible to meet. "LB: Please don't abuse your subordinates nor get drunk" (Proceeds to do exactly that and got assassinated for the trouble).

That War Horse belonged to the great general Lu Bu. Lu Bu is the only warrior who could beat Guan Yu in battle.

the weapon is for chopping legs off of horses and would have been floppy in that time period due to metal temperament. a heavy thick blade wouldnt swing fast enough to chop a speeding horse. it would have been a rigid sharp razor like blade thick only on one side. the back of the guanyu was hard with a hook and the front was floppy with a razor blade of steel. the other end had a spike

Agree. If this was used for a real war, then there is a high chance the blade will hit a hard surface. It should be thicker, or at least stronger. "It will be heavy if it's thicker" Bro, that's why not everyone capable of using it. It's for the strong and skillful one.

a pretty form to be sure, but I'm sorry, I like the Quan Dao, and I have trained with a combat weight weapon, and many of the moves I see in forms are flat out impossible to do with a combat weight weapon. You want to train for real, train with correctly weighted weapons, not ones that weigh less than a Kilo.

The flappiness of the blade in the video distracts me a lot. "Quan Dao" is famous for its heaviness. Not that it must be that heavy for stage performance, but at least don't make it flap so easily like those flappy sword! It is worse than painting a wooden blade in silver.

This might be a dumb question but is the floor at these competitions springy like gymnastics floors? I know that gymnastics uses the Taishan brand which is the label on the floor over there but I don't know if it's the same product between the two sports.

Wushu weapons used for performances are designed to be lighter and more flexible than the real ones. It’s mostly for aesthetics- the movement and reflections enhance the fast movements. They also make it slightly easier to judge- weapons that aren’t swung hard or fast enough aren’t as loud.

Interestingly, when Guanyu was actually alive, the Guandao was not yet an extant weapon. The only historical record suggests he made use of cavalry broadswords, although this was likely not even his main weapon.
