I just picked up a 2024 for $2400 off from Kawasaki plus $1200 for my trade. My main goal was to have a light weight machine that handles tight trails easily, has tractable power and won't pull a ham string picking it up after a drop. All of this adds up to a high fun factor when cost is considered. Being a big fan of Dirtbike Magazine since the mid 1970's and owning a Honda SL100 at the time. Entertaining video. I owned a KLX250s for 6 years. Bought the KLX300SM in August 2021. I still explore hard pack and gravel roads with it, but it is so much more enjoyable on the street. Put as many miles in one year as I did in six years on the 250.

Love my 21 KLX300. Not a lot of trails around here, none legal that is, so mine spends 80% of it's time on the road, usually with a green milk crate zip tied on back. Run to the store, spend an hour on the trails, hop three exits on the expressway, jump on a ferry and ride up to good trails in CT; it basically does everything well, not great, but well is usually enough. It's seen the number one spot in the garage occupied by a F850GSA and the current KTM890 and I'm sure it will outlast a few more stablemates, it's a keeper.

I came off a WR450 when I bought the 2022 KLX300, mostly for being able to throw it on the back of the RV and have street AND trail riding ability... I miss the raw power of the 450, but what I don't miss is getting my arms ripped out of their sockets hanging on. At age 67 it's the perfect comfort bike, but trying to wheele over a down tree or creek is nearly impossible. I upgraded the exhaust and went 3 teeth up on rear gear which helped, and hoping when I dump these stock tires for a Dunlop like these will complete the package. No regrets from me, although having the ability to carry more than 2.0 gals of fuel would be a huge plus.

You'll only be disappointed if you expect to ride it like a race machine. The short wheelbase and fairly low weight make it a fun trail bike for slow-medium speed stuff, not to mention urban tomfoolery. The 350 has a brilliant balance for getting you a distance, before going off road. It really can't cost that much to fuel inject the DRZ (& tune for low emissions) and put the DR 6 speed gear cluster in it?

Rode a friend's this past weekend. Brand new, still breaking it in. Didn't take it on any trails though, just back roads around Estacada, OR. Fun bike. A little sluggish for a 300cc I though. Topped out at about 65mph for the break-in. Corners nicely and the weight of the bike is great(for me) - rides light.
@TheAnnoyingBoss Жыл бұрын
Its about the torque. A lil sluggish maybe but its a spicy 250, its designed for the slowest most technical offroad so frankly hos after breal it you pculd probably do 60 up a hill pretty easy that makes it a lot more useful than a grom in my area since then i can stay at the speed limit up the hill with all the other cars. I do wonder though because dr650 is a lot more engine for not too much more money so its better for the roads but i bet you this 300 is a beast like where i live shere theres lots of more slow offroad. Theres no interstates nesr me so itll do all the speed limits around here. So it is quite capable. 250s were always good. Its nive to see real competition and they take it to near 300cc so its a spicy 250. Honda has a similar. I alwaysnwish the emct gen of hondas minimotos would have 2 engine options like how their rebel has 3. That way you can upgrade from a 125 grom to a 250. Or a trail 125 to a trail 250. Thay way theoretically i could buy a grom thst can easily pull 60 up a hill

The most restricted part of these KLX 250/300 engines is the air box. Lid off, HiFlo Filtro $20 , cut back fire screen out, and O2 delete resistor {reads ecu prime fuel to air, adds fuel} $25 adds A LOT of torque and throttle response. For only under $50 also, its simple and reversible and only adds intake growl instead of obnoxious loud exhaust. Adding a slip on will add a little higher rpm power but for a lot of money, and its not as big a gain as the air box mods.

I learned my mistake. Dont do any of that and leave it stock. Its already a 250 they beefed up to 300. You never get the money back selling it because everyone has different taste so my upgrades ruin the bike for them and their upgrades ruin the bike for me. If you buy one and put 50k on the clock and you sell it to a guy hoping itll make it another 50k its easier to sell it when you can tell them it hasnt had holes chopped in the side and has been stressrf harder than it was designed for in its rough first 50k. If its bone stock then they know the whole bike is exactly how it was intended to be and nothing will confuse them thats out of the ordinary. My only exceptions of course are consumables like tires, as well as windsheild, maybe a top box. Keep the powertrain stock so its reliable as long as possible. If a grom busts at 50k miles no matter how good you treat it then this 300 could easily last signifiantly longer depending on how you really treat jt. If you got all these power additions etc itll be fun and all but all you did was drain the bank account more when you shoulda just saved up for a dr400 or something if a little more power is what you wanted. Buying small motor and upgrading its power is just admitting you got a smaller engine than you wanted. This 250 is already professionally taken to 300 from factory and bone stocm theyre pretty reliable so why change it when it works fine man. Its going to be hard to sell my 5k bike for 4k after i put 30k miles on it if i drilled holes in the side of the airbox and added expensive exhuast and tunes etc to what is already more of a budget dual sport which fits the role of being a perfect lightweight 250 on the trail which is the perfect size and then is actually a 300 giving more power for the road. An exhust on this will be super annpying at 5k rpm all day long bro. I perfer to keep rhe stock exhuast i paid a fortune for. Nice and quiet on the ears,.keeps.the headaches from coming so you can ride longer.
@tieoneon1614 Жыл бұрын
@@TheAnnoyingBoss Holy Christ that was a novel. Everything I listed, and everything i is reversable back to oem and I keep the oem parts for when I sell bikes. I then sell the new owner the aftermarket parts he wants and he can put them on. And NO, getting the 300 for $7500 OTD that needs sprockets, tires, etc isnt smart vs buying a used 250 for $4k and some of the expensive parts are on already. $600 in intake/exhaust on the 250 gets you the same hp but more torque than a OEM 300, also. And if u read what i previously wrote, its just the airbox lid and filter. Both u can put back on and it keeps the bike quiet or adding a good bump in power in both the 250 and 300.

@copisetic1104 Жыл бұрын
The klx300 cam timing is crazy, if your turning 12000 rpm like a Ducati fine. Basically the intake and exhaust cam timing should be switched and the ACR should be adjusted for easy starting. Engines that have this done gain 2-3hp and the intake drone is almost gone, the midrange is vastly improved, combined with tuning and a good pipe your knocking on a 5hp gain.
@johnstanley74422 жыл бұрын
Precision makes easily-installed racks. You might want to consider one of the Rotopax horizontally-mounted mini-Jerry Cans, since the KLX300 has a modest, 2-gallon tank, and no gas gauge. Those Rotopax cans come in a variety of sizes. There $pendy, but tough, and easy-to-use, and they'll give you an extra measure of safety from running out of gas, in "the middle of nowhere." You may ALSO want to consider getting-online to find a source of Ethanol-Free GAS, since it'll last longer, and is better for engines. SOME States like Oklahoma or Arkansas have it in many of their regular gas stations, while in others, you'll need to track it-down, maybe grabbing a couple of genuine NATO (military-grade) full-sized Jerry Cans, in which to carry and store your supplies of Ethanol-Free Gas. It COSTS more, but it IS worth considering, especially during winter. Put in some Sta-Bil, as-per directions, if you're not going to use the Gas, right-away. These KLX300's are nice little bikes, for just having fun, or buzzing-around doing errands, and can, within reason, go off-road, so long as you're not attempting to reach Warp Speeds. They're easy to find stuff-on, like when you need to mess with the battery, etc.

My buddy had a great time when a stick shot up and took them out. Good times. Excellent design and thought process by Kawasaki on that one.

When is Yamaha going to offer a 300 dual sport to replace the the WR250R? Clearly The Green Team sees some Green in it.
@pinkiewerewolf2 жыл бұрын
I'd hope Yamaha at least takes it to the 350cc level and even better yet a 450, they would dominate sales with a decent service interval.

@@pinkiewerewolf Absolutely was street legal, it had a title, headlights/taillights DOT tires and license plate. I ALWAYS rode it as much on the street as the trails. In fact that WR450 was my 3rd WR I owned. Two prior were 2 stroke 250 WR's, the first year for a 2 stroke WR 1989 and 1997, the 450 was a 2007. All three came from the dealer with titles and license plates. Open your eyes to the great machines available, instead of posting incorrect garbage. Unless you live in Communist California where gas engines are about too be illegal, than you may be correct.

Remember the 1990's when a TRX250 was a hot reliable quad? Now, i feel like people look down on everything that isn't a 450cc+. 300cc will get you around. Seriously considering this as an on/off road woods bike.

Sad they dont sell this bike in Finland, wonder why. There are so few dual-sports sold here which are street legal from the factory. You can get all the enduros and MX bikes you want, but none of them are street legal from the factory. The only competition this would have is Honda CRF300L/CRF300 Rally

At 65 I thought I'd like something a little slower and lighter , just didn't think it would be this slow. If your content with lackluster performance and one notch above a TW200 than you would probably be happy with this bike but in the dirt I always find myself hoping for more power and on the road one more gear and the extra money you spend to get there your better off starting with 400cc to 650 cc bike and as far as cost mine listed at 6099.00 but after BS dealer markups cost 7409.00 before taxes and tags.
