2023 Lunar New Year Celebration ⎸Joseon Pop ⎸ The Song of Hungbo

Lunar New Year (Sol-nal / 설날), often referred to as Chinese New Year in the West, is one of the important traditional Korean holidays. It's a time during which Korean families gather to celebrate the new year by eating together and playing games.
Every year GKF celebrates Lunar New Year by sharing a special virtual music program. This year's performance features several talented students at the prestigious Korean National University of the Arts. The performance features Joseon pop. A reference to the Joseon era (1392-1910), Joseon pop is a combination of traditional music know at “Gugak” with pop music genres.

Jieon Park - Junior at Korea National University of Arts, Certified National Intangible Cultural Property, Excellence Award at the Pansoril Competition, Awarded Grand prize (Voice) at the 27th Gyeonggido Youth Musical Festival
Jisang Yoo - Junior at Korea National University of Arts, received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award at the Samulnori Competition, received National Assembly Speaker Award at Jeonju Traditional performance competition, received the grand prize at the 1st Dongducheon Traditional Music Festival.
This year's Lunar New Year concert consists of the following performances:
The Song of Hungbo - Hungbo and Nolbo were brothers who were the son of a very rich man. Nolbo, the older brother, was very greedy and coldhearted, but his younger brother, Hungbo, was kind and empathetic. The songs of Hungbo is considered a pansori-based fiction, which refers to novels that have been influenced by the narratives of pansori (a genre of Korean musical storytelling). The poor Hungbo became rich after he took care of a swallow which later brought Hungbo a pumpkin seed, which later became large pumpkins with treasure. The coldhearted Nolbo after learning what happened to Hungbo intentionally broke the leg of a swallow and received a seed which later became various elements of destruction including dokkaebi (Korean goblins) which beat and chided him for his greed.

Nolbo’s greedy part - Nolbo is greedy and coldhearted. Nolbo took all the assets from his rich parent and tricked Hungbo and his family and threw them out in order to keep the entire fortune himself. Hungbo did not complain and accepted his fate of poverty
2️⃣The Songs of Hungbo
Two Hands Together part - The empathetic Hungbo worked very hard but could not overcome the poverty after the harvest was bad. Hungbo went to his brother’s house to beg for some food for his children.
3️⃣ The Songs of Hungbo
Nolbo beat Hungbo part - Hungbo was begging to his brother Nolbo for food but Nolbo beat him instead.
4️⃣ Hwilrilri
The sound of wind or flute as a means of delivering your mind longing for your lovers
5️⃣ Seoljanggunori
Seoljanggoo is a leader of Korean traditional instrumental farm musical instrument (hourglass drum) and this part shows techniques of hourglass drum.
6️⃣ Seongjupuri
The song is representing southern part of Korea. Traditionally Korean believe that there is a house god and goddess to provide the stability of house building and prosperity of the family. So, when they move to a new house, they always have worship service and this song was played at the worship service.
7️⃣ Guktaeminan
The song to wish for the well-being of the nation and the community
