There are HUGE changes in the powertrain department. First off under the hood we have a 2.4L gas engine that gives you 131hp and 144 lb/ft then we have a front electric motor that gets a 34hp bump up to 114 hp and a rear that gets a 44hp increase to 134hp up from 90 hp.
But wait there’s more, we have more giddy ups we need a larger battery which is 45% larger so we go from 13.8 to 20 kWh.
Another big change is the new PHEV is now equipped with a heat pump and because of that, under average temperature, it will not have to rely so much on the engine temp to provide climate control. I did say average so when it gets really cold out like close to zero, you’ll find that the gas engine may kick on more often especially at start up. I experienced all different weather conditions while testing this PHEV from below zero temps to double digits and just like any EV, the colder it gets, the range will get lower which is why this is a very good test because if it was summer or if you live in a warmer climate, your mileage is going to be better for sure.
Speaking of range, the official EV range is 61 kms however when you look at the computer, the number it provides is an average based on your driving. Eg. If you’re crawling at 30 mph in traffic for a long time, its going to get better efficiency and your number will be higher, maybe even more than 61 however if traffic picks up and your doing 100kms then it’ll go down.
Ive been driving mostly in colder weather so starting with a full charge I’ve gotten over 60kms of range however did burn a little fuel just at the beginning for about 4-5 min I guess to warm the engine not only for heat but for efficiency and emissions.
My fuel economy varied but with a flat battery, I averaged 6.2l 100/kms 38 US MPG. On one leg of a drive I averaged only 3.5 l/100kms, the reason, we climbed the ski mountain and on the way down I was able to Regen quite a bit of range back into the battery. Its quite fun because you have the paddles behind the wheel, pull the left one for 5 settings of Regen, pull the right to decrease so I just increased it when my speed increased and if I was slowing too much I just decreased to keep my momentum.
While we're on the Regen topic, here a new little button here beside the EV mode selector and that’s the Innovate pedal, press this you get one pedal driving however it will not come to a complete stop. Its handy around town or if you have a nice road with some curves and you want to maintain nice smooth rhythm, this is how you’ll do it without touching the brake and putting electricity back in.
So Brian how does it drive? Well after driving the gas Outlander for the past year, the PHEV does not disappoint. I predicted that it would pick up some of the off the line slack its gas only sibling as and it sure does. Whether you have charge in the battery or not, off the line torque is so much better due to the electric motors. The ride feels more planted most likely due to the extra weight from the low slung batteries.
I have to ask, anyone who has a PHEV, are you constantly trying to get the best efficiency? I’m telling you, I love watching my trip computer and especially the energy flow screening trying to be always get the best mileage. Theres so much going on but its like an orchestra of input, output, driving the wheels, Regen and its all very seamless.
Sometimes it operates as a series hybrid so the gas engine actually just works as a generator to supply power to the battery which in turn powers the motors, sometimes as a parallel hybrid which the gas engine will supply power direct to the front wheels and use electric assist with the motors and of course often it just runs completely off the battery and this will even happen when your battery is even showing empty. I guess there’s always a reserve. You’ll see this often when you're under light load even at speed on the freeway.
There are now 7 different drive modes for different conditions including a new POWER mode. Select this and it really wakes the Outlander up, perfect for higher speed passing or just when you need more power. This new version will make a run to 100 km/h from a stop 2 seconds quicker than the first gen.

If this is your first AWD vehicle, beware of the false sense of extra traction betraying you when braking. During acceleration they can feel like they could climb a tree if there was snow on its bark, but don't decelerate any better than a non AWD. In fact the extra driveline and battery weight if hybrid or PHEV, sometimes increases stopping distances especially depending on type of tires and driver's winter driving skill set.

I have been a fan of Mitsubishi for a few decades now. I currently own a 2019 Outlander Sport BUT I just ordered a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SEL touring, fully loaded. I AM SO EXCITED for it to come in! Your video gets me even more excited! I had to wait until this month to purchase, not only for it to be released in the States, but also for my local dealership to "learn how to work on them" before they could officially sell them. Hi, I've seen just about every video on this vehicle and yours was really great. A charming part of it was when your wife was sitting in there with you and she was smiling and nodding at certain points showing that she really likes the vehicle as well and you could tell it was genuine. This vehicle blew my mind and I bought it and it blew my mind even more. Like you I have been hooked on trying to get the best mileage out of it and I am in pure EV mode as much as possible. What mitsi dealer don't explain to outlander phev customers. The best way to save fuel on long journeys is to put it on save mode and save the EV for low-speed areas. Driving with your battery depleated regularly will make you use more fuel and potential early battery degrade in the long run. Just understand that this is still technically a hybrid, cheaping out by heavily relying on the battery while it's depleted, the generator will have to work harder to regen powering the electric motors at the same time.

Yes, Brian, I am hooked driving my Sorento PHEV and I "play" by turning off heat in cold winter days, since this car does not have a heat pump so any heat required inside the cabin will turn on the gas engine and give me less than 999 mpg which I do not like seeing lol. We purchased our 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander GT phev in mid-april 2023. This car has been even more than expected. The battery range on the car is far more than the EPA estimate and the ability to regenerate electricity is phenomenal when driving. Since purchase we have put on 1,050 kms with virtually all of it being under battery power. Our range has consistently being higher than 70 km per charge and usually in the range of between 80 and 90 km per charge. Admittedly I am driving conservatively however I am not hypermiling. I use the battery and one pedal driving all the time as well as an eco mode and with this I'm getting well over the EPA rating. In every sense of the word the car has been much more than expected. With the 20-in wheels the car ride is very much Volvo like being that it is comfortable yet a little firm in ride however the car Corners like it's on Rails and when the demand is there it goes like a jackrabbit. The amount of torque in the electric motors really makes the car a Powerhouse. The one downside for The Outlander in North America is the towing capacity being 1500 lb versus 3,600 lb everywhere else in the world such as Australia where the car is getting superb reviews. This rating does the Outlander a disservice . For the interest of readers my driving has been 30% Highway and 70% City driving and I have found virtually no difference in the ability to get the high number of kilometers per charge when on the highway versus the city especially using the one pedal driving mode. My procedure went starting is to turn the dial to eco then press the EV mode and then press the one pedal driving mode on the console. This is a fabulous vehicle with a very tight turning radius. Do you find it odd when the gas engine kicks on? I find that sometimes it’s quite random even when the temp is ideal for EV only driving and I’m babying the accelerator.

It shouldnt Use eco mode then press ev then one pedal driving button anf motor will not come on unless the battery instant gauge hits the slightly less bright dots. You can also leave it in normal press ev anf one pedal button which gives a sharper pedal response. I dont though as only use as said at the start. If you have not put fuel in the tank for a few months the car will consume fuel so as to prevent stale gas syndrome.i also use the adbanced cruise control 70% of my driving regardless city or highway. Eco mode does not prevent more assertive acceleration if desired. Comment again if further discussion desired. Hope this helps.

Yes, we have a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe (PHEV). We're hooked, and this Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV may be a great addition for my wife! We like the 1500W outlet. I'll bet I could adapt Openpilot for hands-free driving (replacement for the stock Lane Keeping Assist System, better and with neural net driver monitoring for safe hands-free operation on long boring drives).

Received our 2023 Outlander PHEV last Tuesday. It's been snowing here on the East Coast since. It performs very very well in the snow. I am absolutely obsessed with trying to keep it in EV mode. I find that during the current temperatures (-1 to 2 degrees C) the ICE is on for the first 2-3km of every trip in EV mode but then kicks off until there is abrupt acceleration or the battery is depleted. I do know that by just running the engine without driving it takes 90 min. I have the vehicle right now and next time I do a long drive I’ll try it. Sorry because that doesn’t answer your question.

I got the only one in South Australia, have covered 2500 km and used 25 litres of fuel, average 1 litre per 100 km, driving 50/50 urban,/ highway,costs about 3$ a charge, which I do overnight at home, won't be an issue when I get solar battery back up, bought a spare for 100$, I only use recharge when going up hill and regularly getting 10km extra charge going down hill, so far so good.

I wish they just dropped Chademo and went with a 7.2kw or 9.6kw on board inverter to allow for real level 2 charging instead of having fast charging. Plugging a PHEV in to fast chargers with actual EVs waiting in line is asking for a nerdy plugin civil war.

Here's an example for you. I ordered one of these in GT Trim around the 27th of January. I was advised the GT Trim will take six months to one year before it came in. However, I received a call from my dealership last Wednesday and was told that my car was on it's way and that I should have it by the end of this month or early April.

Awesome review! I got my new Outlander PHEV in June here in NZ. Interesting that it takes you 16 hours to charge from your standard home plug. I get a full charge in 8-10 hours using the supplied 10 Amp charger that I can plug into a standard socket. I've never seen my car go into the Parallel EV mode. It's always in Series mode. What conditions are needed for it to engage Parallel mode? And to answer your question, I swore I'd never change my driving style. But I now find myself restricting my speed coming down hills just so I can put charge back into the battery!

Its not in the same ballpark. The Mitsubishi phev is about 15% better than the RAV4 on capabilities. Whereas the kia Sorento is built with last generation technology and doesnt even have enough power to quailify for the full gov rebate. When they designed the Sorento, they picked the ideal cost balance for the manufacturer, not the customer. Its not awful, but price to value its not worth it. Those second generation Phevs were barely worth it. Lots of brands are trying to sell them anyway because their behind the game. Building PHEVs is harder than the other types of cars, because they need to be perfect. You can get away with inefficiencies and trade off in the other types of vehicles. The new generation phevs are: The Rav4 (First to the party), the Mitsubishi Outlander, and soon to be the Kia Niro Phev. The kia niro phev is going to be fantastic, and has the highest value for its price, assuming you dont mind its small.

excellent video! I'm owning a tesla model 3. I would like to have a 2nd car for family and I'm interested in this car. how ever, i have few questions 1) how good is the application (compared to tesla apps)? is there any delay upon pressing a command? 2) can we precondition the car remotely with the application? or remote control? 3) We still need to do a regular maintenance right? like the oil change, transmission oil change, fluid, etc, 4) The acceleration is quick (either on full electric or gaz?) or some delay ? 5) I only need 35km from home to my work place and i have chargers at work and home. I could kick myself for not putting down 400.00 and doing a purchase contract with a dealer On AUGUST 12th 2022 before the new EV BILL came into law. This would have been a steal at $31,500.00 (-$7500 FEDERAL Credit) USA. I hope that new GEORGIA senator EV bill gets past it will give manufacturer's 18 mos to prepare for the new law instead of the circus of bill that just instantly happened. It would make this car eligible again for an EV credit. LOVE the 1500W for Tailgating and Camping. I sure hope this car is a homerun it should be for Mitsubishi!

Unless you had a sales contract it doesn’t matter. The legislation specifies that it must have a sales contract, US dealers didn’t even know pricing until November. On a side note, IF you have a company/business you can still get the $7500 rebate, in addition it qualifies for the Bush’s Era tax rebate on vehicle in excess of 6000 lbs GVWR, THAT’s a BIG deal. You can “write off” the cost over 1-5 years, check with a tax advisor to see if this makes sense for you

Just a heads up that the Sportage/Santa Fe do not have true "ELECTRIC ONLY" Ev mode. The gasoline engine does come on quite frequently around town. And they do not have the 1500 watt out which is great for camping trips.

Thanks for the review, Brian. The official mileage numbers for pure-hybrid mode on Mitsubishi's (Cdn) website say 9L/100km, while you said you got 6.2L/100km. Is that because your numbers are from highway driving, while Mitsubishi is quoting city driving numbers? To take the point further, most other PHEVs claim 7L/100km (if not lower), so doesn't that put the Outlander at a huge disadvantage compared to the likes of Kia Sportage PHEV (let alone the RAV4)?

Yes that was mainly highway. I just ran it out of EV now and will run it gas only for a bit to see what numbers I get again. I won't drive too much though on just gas if I don't have to since gas is $$$ and electricity is so much cheaper which is why I plug-in every day. I'll update once I get some miles on it. I asked Cynthia my wife to take it today so it'll get at least 7- kms on it with no charge.

The only thing I was concerned about is Mitsubishi has been almost non-existent in the U.S.A. for the last decade...you just don't hear about them or see any new cars. This also means there are very few dealers. I like the Outlander PHEV but was concerned about Mitsubishi's small footprint in the U.S.A.

If you're using cruise control and you're going downhill will the cruise control automatically activate the regenerative braking or do you have to manually press that paddle on the steering wheel?

It will use regen braking pretty well anytime you brake up to a certain point. No need to use paddles. Paddles just provide even more, good for longer hills.

Very good video. Thanks. My dilemma is that I have a deposit on both the outlander PHEV and an EV6. I was told by my Mitsubishi dealership that I should be able to take delivery by the end of the month. The Kia EV6 probably won’t be available until March or April 2023. My initial intent was to go full out EV, but when I see the practical side of a PHEV…..I’ve never owned a Mitsubishi, am a bit wary of the overall quality of the product long term. 🤔🤷

If you maintain your vehicles according to manufacturers' recommendations, you need not worry about owning a Mitsubishi!!! Surprising to many, our Mitsubishis have been FAR more reliable than the Toyotas our family USED TO OWN (which were plagued with excessive oil consumption, oil sludge, Corolla CVT defect/failure, Tacoma rusted frames and cracked truck beds). Our Mitsubishis (Dodge Raider, Expo LRV, Galant) may not be as popular or talked-about by the average American vlogger as the typical go-to models here in the US (RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, Sportage, Tucson), but they have been bulletproof and faithful -- NEVER, EVER letting us down. We rented the outgoing Outlander PHEV a few times and absolutely loved its smooth, seamless hybrid system...FAR SMOOTHER than ANY current Toyota or Honda we test-drove. This new generation Outlander knocks it out of the park!!! Go Mitsubishi!!!👏👍🤙💪

I thought the Jeep Wrangler 4xe was the best selling PHEV? I think the biggest problem Mitsubishi will have is the lack of dealer support in the US. What DC fast charging port does it use? Couldn't tell but it looks like Chademo (which is rapidly going away in the US). And what's the point of DC fast charging on a PHEV? Just put gas in it.

You can drive it in EV mode in the city and then just revert to a regular hybrid after the battery is depleted. For sure if you charged it everyday, you'd be saving a ton.

A family member and a coworker have Mach-Es and I know people with Teslas and a VW ID.4… They all complain about range anxiety when taking their cars on road trips or how inconvenient it is having to charge it even at fast charging stations. PHEVs are the best of both worlds. I’m buying one to commute to work. I have multiple charging stations in my apartment building and several charging stations at work, so “fuel” will be free for me. When I go on a road trip, I can fill up my gas tank in 3 minutes instead of 30 minutes for 80% of the battery. People are reporting higher EV range than what Mitsubishi reported, as well as 35+MPG in hybrid mode, so it’s a no brainer!

Just to add on to what johnson said: PHEVs are one of the harder cars to manufacture well, because you cant get away with cheap engines or electric motors. Every iota of energy wasted is noticed. Only tesla has electric motors so efficient they truly increase your electric range any more than you will get with a phev. Yes, you will pay less for moving your vehicle with an electric car. However, the way they price electric vehicles makes sure that you wont see those returns inside of 5 years. Essentially, the car companies are taking a cut of your fuel efficiency. Enter a phev, with required electric motors that are more efficient than most electric cars, including an engine, with the only thing it doesnt have that an electric car has is less batterys. But it still has some. And its cheaper than the electric vehicle. What I am saying is that your being ripped off on electric vehicles. The phev is a full electric vehicle with a motor in it that is somehow cheaper. Get more for your money. Why not. Also if everyone bought a phev right now instead of electric vehicles, they would all cost less to make, and would be significantly better for the environment than just a few people having electric cars. Thats why the gov wants them.

so on a PHEV, if your everyday drive is more than 38 miles, the battery will deplete all the time and so your down to the gas engine therefore your horse power and torque is down as well until you charge up again?? so how is this better than a hybrid?

The battery is never completed depleted and it operates as a regular hybrid after your range is 0 and at times it’ll retain range from regen braking. It’s like a regular hybrid but you get the first 38 likes of driving for pretty well free plus all the other benefits of a PHEV like EV incentives. HOV access not to mention a great AWD system

Level 2 charging is to slow, 3.5 KW takes 6 hours to charge at home, yes you can fast charge in 38 minutes, I have a Honda Clarity that charges at home in 2 and 1/2 hours at 6.6 KW.

Definitely a premium to be paid for sure but compared to what else it competes with, this one is a very compelling package especially if you can get some $$$ off with some EV incentives.
