2023 Narrowboat Sessions. Vox Americana, 'Knoxville Town'.

The Staffordshire based band Vox Americana was started by Helen Walford with percussionist Emily Bailey (HGV Driver) and Bass player Hollie Lucas (Professional Dog Walker) after Helen realised that Americana style music in the UK was dominated by mostly male bands. Being a native of the U.S. of A herself she really wanted to get an all female Americana band together and that's how it all started three years ago. With a truly authentic American twang, here's their second song for us, 'Knoxville Town'. This is a reimagining of the murder ballad 'Knoxville Girl' from the perspective of the intended victim. Maury, I agree! FYI, the beat box she is playing is called a cajon, the surface she is playing on is normally free on top of the front surface to allow a slap kind of sound, there are normally “snares” inside, sometimes adjustable, to allow a kind of fizzy sound, and notice how she drags her right foot up the front surface periodically to change the sound. Where you hit the front surface, and how you hit it with your hand also allows variation in the sound. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself and I deny that I actually have a cajon and try to play it!

I’m a free styling hambone - just slap myself silly sometimes and often just solo grooving. Fun to create. This whole video is amazing. The singer/guitarist, that bassist !
