The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

Much better commercial! I like this one was more specific talking about the internals...not like before just watching dudes casting and catching just for looks. So happy they stuck with Stradic than the Vanguard name! Stradic sounds much cooler!

Dont get mistaken by the Felt Washer and Carbon drag washer. It does not affect the performance. Many misunderstood that. Carbon washer and Felt washer both has their disadvantages.

they put in a better main gear, thats the biggest upgrade they could have given the stradic fl in my opinion. the previous generation had a main gear coating that wore after a few months of fishing and felt much less refined, the new gears have a stronger coating and better design to distribute load so they will not have the same issue, as noted in the video. They are also the same main gear used in the stellas. That alone is a massive upgrade if you ask me

Can't believe they still use felt drag washers in a $229 reel! They need to up grade them to carbon fiber drag washers. Sad that Penn has them in all there reels except there lowest reel they offer, the Penn Wrath!

​@Jessica37323 you're just a newbie.Carbon washers are only better when you're fishing higher drags. Even 5-6k reels are only practically fished with no more than 10-12 lbs of drag. If you're fishing anything under 20 pound test I would argue felt performs better though it may not last as long it is far less sticky/jumpy which is essential when fishing anything under 10 lb test. The small/medium sized Stella's use them for that reason. I don't know who's feeding all this carbon drag only nonsense to you but you shouldn't be so naive.
