@@fr8train224 Of course..., our snare ensembles (and quad ensembles) started at UNT after it became clear the PAS College competition had participation issues. I encourage students to take the initiative and begin writing music. When a piece starts taking shape we have rehearsals where I talk primarily about the form and structure and give guidance about adjusting the composition. The student composers start to develop their voice, but you can sometimes hear the influence or variations on music they played during the summer. Here is a little history: 2006 (Dustin Doelling), 2009 (Josh Boychuk and Jonathan Leal), 2012 (Bayo Ajibade), 2013 (Aaron Fisher), 2015 (Peter Cannon),2016 (Bryce Gardner), 2017 (Bryce Gardner), 2021 (JT Baker),2022 (JT Baker). I am proud of all their work, and strongly encourage them to keep writing and go one to do great things.

I thought they would have been out for blood this summer and it seems only the corps folding could stop another Sanford.

Rennick's books always serve the music. Sometimes the most effective music might call for something simple. The thought that not writing a bunch of choppy nonsense somehow discredits the musicians playing it is laughable. There is a reason his percussionists have such a successful pedigree.

No acrobatics, prancing, posing, dancing, silly facial emoting- just all out drumming. Thank you SCV and UNT for all you do to advance the art of rudimental snare drumming. Thanks also for pushing the envelope in a forward direction every year. You are appreciated for maintaining what drew most of us into this activity. As a side note, I don't mean to take away from what other groups are doing. The members have no control over what the designers create for them to interpret. Pure drumming is what draws us in for sure. This is pure and real. No pretense. No antics. No acting. Pure. As an old experienced guy, I appreciate that and applaud your presentation. Marching the summer season isn’t as simple as it used to be. There are shareholders that are looking for a return on their investment. Instructors looking to get their pay for time invested. Support staff needed to make sure the performers are getting along in the right mind. Insurance and that stuff. It’s not like in the past where it all fell on the director. The summer music program is a big monster now. What always amazed me was how the battery was able to look so different season to season.

Must disagree with you on 'old school' snare sound. Real rim-shots are non-existent and the projection is muted. Sounds like they are playing on the snare-side head of the 'old school' snares. Never cared for these modern marching snare drums. Nothing but 'diddle' patterns in modern drum corps with single patterns so prolific in 'old school' playing curiously absent. It is like the modern marching snare design dictates the writing of the snare chart.
