2023 Sprinter AWD v. 4WD Road Test and Review

It's time to road test the 2023 Sprinter AWD and compare it to the outgoing Sprinter 4x4. In this video we will take an extensive drive on multiple types of roads and surfaces to give you our impression if the 2023 AWD is compares to the 2022 Sprinter 4x4. We will also give you a general review of the 2023 Sprinters features and interior.

Finally a great real world road test review on the 2023 AWD Sprinter. We’ve had ours for awhile now and really gotten to test it out. Power and smoothness of the HO 2.0L 4 cyl with the 9-speed are far superior to the 6 cyl turbo diesel 7-speed combo. That was the biggest surprise to me. The close ration 9G trans, power delivery coming off the line is amazing. It shifts very smoothly and there’s even paddle shifters to take advantage of the new powertrain. The low speed turbo kicks in at low RPM and then high speed kicks in and the van surges forward with authority. Almost zero turbo lag. The 4Matic AWD has been excellent. As mentioned it is smooth, seamless, invisible to the driver and just provides traction when the van needs it. My mileage hasn’t been as good, probably more like 18-19 but it’s all been snow driving and mostly in town driving. Pretty sure the low 20’s is achievable out on the highways in the warmer months. The one thing I disagree on is the Michelin all season that mine came with are mediocre in the snow at best. We ditched them and went to studded dedicated snows for our north MidWest winters. Buying a set of Rhino rims and some BFGs all Terrains for summer driving.

Thank you for the comment. We also mentioned in the video getting AT tires if you were going to be driving in snow or off road.. so totally agree with you regarding the tires. I hate they do not have an AT tire option... kinda stupid IMO.

22 should be less.. but will be either 4x2 or 4x4. Mercedes increased 2023 pricing by 6 to 8k. If you want to order a van let me know. We get them at MSRP.

I don’t believe the 4-cyl. diesel will last as long as the 6-cyl. I have a ‘22 4x4 and don’t have any issues engaging 4-wheel Hi or Lo. Very good on the beach with the General ATX’s I switched over to. Definitely agree with you about Cross Wind Assist-Awful!

Agree. That's the one thing missing in this review. I'd be a little suspect of the longevity with that little 4 cylinder toting 9k+ pounds. Question, do you need to be in park when you switch your van into 4x4?

Good to hear that the ride quality is much improved. But the #1 question I hoped you were going to address is how the off-road performance differed from the 4X4. Is it better? Worse?

I wish I could have, but unfortunately I'm a builder, so I can't take a clients van out and get crazy lol. I assume it will be similar to the 4x4... which again I have never taken off the beaten path unfortunately. I might take the next AWD for us if I can sell my current inventory by April ;) If I do, I'll definitely take that van out west this summer ;) Thanks for watching!

I have a ‘22 4x4 - no issue switching to 4x4. You are also comparing the performance of a fully built out 170 V6 with an empty 144 i4. Obviously one is hundreds of pounds heavier.

It is actually a little loud. But you do get used to it when driving.

AWD or 4WD without front, center and rear differentials lockers is just a 2WD.

It’s kind of noisy while driving in high speed including the music. Next time can you show us its towing capabilities and payload capacity too..

Is your window rolled down? soundproofing. I used the in doing that three Mercedes front or vans back that’s probably my favorite out of those type of vehicles back down adversity is because of the aluminum foil on the middle Consol. I’m driving right now but I really prefer Alexis so

Ahora han sacado la Sprinter con traccion delantera pero sigue manteniendo el suelo 15 cms mas alto que p.ejem la Peugeot Boxer, Jumper, Master de Renault, Movano etc y por tanto 15 cms mas alta en exterior, con el choque de aire y tambien mas estrecha que las mencionadas y esto se acusa que cuando se camperiza no se puede dormir a lo ancho. Yo tengo una Sprinter del 2008, la pintura al poco tiempo se puso mate y le salen puntos de oxido por doquier, no puedo abrir las ventanillas en marcha porque se mete los gases del escape, se estropeó sin mas la cerradura de arranque con el bloqueo de volante, se estropeó sin mas 2 veces el climatizador, los espejos exteriores de pronto se han ido cayendo despegandose, el asiento me da dolor de espalda, hace bastante ruido el aire, los pasos de rueda, y el motor, la goma de la ventanilla lleva años haciendo un chillido horrible al bajar y subir el cristal, en las cuestas arriba se me viene abajo descargada me adelantan los camiones motor de 129cv....claro es que pagué 10.000€ mas que otras marcas por ser esta marca premium.

All van builders will say how great the new van is because that's all they can get and they want to sell vans.

Although I agree that some builders may do that, but that's not us We aren't trying to sell this van. This is a customers van and it's our opinion having experience on various sprinters comparing the 4x4 to the AWD... An honest opinion based on real world experience. Agree or disagree, everyone is entitled to have an opinion. Thanks for your feedback.
