Hey everybody! We are just trying to figure out if we had an MY22 or MY23 car. The MY23 dropped the supercharger (now turbocharged only). The last T8 Polestar I drove had a noticeable supercharger whine that was missing from our test car. Finding out now whether we had an MY22 or MY23 - Australian stock is delayed from the rest of the world so it could be either way.

This is an amazing car. I’ve had mine since January 2023. A few things. The camera system faulted after one week and I was instructed to return it to Volvo where they did a hard reset - fixed the problem. I also had an error message about tyre pressure when driving at ~40C one day. No real issue!. The car is incredible around town on short city trips, veery frugal due to the electric motors, and of course on trips the petrol motor has lots of power. My biggest criticism is the low profile tyres and 22” rims which I guarantee you will scuff no matter how careful you are.

I have this exact model (plate starts with ET..). The silver dawn colour is so nice and understated. We do mostly city driving and went about a month without using a single ML of fuel. It was only for the random trips to the Southern Highlands or our latest snow trip did we use fuel. It takes about 9 hours to charge with the included charger plugged into a household outlet. The infotainment system was recently updated to support Apple CarPlay which I thought would be a game changer but to be honest, the Google system with Spotify and Google Maps integrate with the car extremely nicely and I rarely plug in to CarPlay. The speakers are the best I've ever heard in a car. The car is seriously quick, and the lane assist works great at 110km/h on the freeways. I love my orange key. The biggest annoyance is the lack of DC/fast charging however the non-Tesla network is so terrible right now that anyone would struggle with a pure EV. This is why we went with the PHEV.

Thank you for the review Paul. I have been driving my T8 recharge for about 3 months now. If you do a daily run of about 63kms then come home and plug it in to have same sort of electric range available for next day. There is room for further optimisation of drive modes as I think ICE can kick in speeds of 80 and above to increase electric range and increase efficiencies. I see this as an evolution of XC60 and room for improvement. OTA can be leveraged and make the ownership more fun and satisfying.

The Volvo's interior is so unbeatable, and I really like the level they keep in building their vehicles. The only concern that prevents me from buying a Volvo is the fuel economy. At least, their non-hybrid cars are really thirsty, except for the outgoing diesel versions. So, how's the feasibility of their PHEV solution is a big point in judging whether to buy a Volvo.
@benjaminsmith22872 жыл бұрын
Since they're going EV only they'll be going current gen for PHEVs vs. next gen for full EVs. I don't know how much the current gen cars can be improved regarding fuel economy based on their current platform. The BEVs will get better range, due to their aerodynamics and ground-up made for BEV platform.

I really think the PHEV reviews need to change a little to begin to incorporate city driving and actually attempting to achieve the stated fuel figure. I know a few people that own a PHEV and they really do see a benefit to owning one, but coming off these reviews, you'd think they are spending the extra money for no real reason. Anyway, I love the videos like always Paul.
@cbatiau25282 жыл бұрын
I agree. And as the owner of a 2022 XC60 T8 "Extended Range" (my third PHEV), I can say that it does really well in city driving, especially in "B" mode which is one-pedal driving that maximizes regen to the traction battery, extending all-electric range. I easily and consistently get 40 miles of all-electric range in non-highway driving (< 40 mph) "around town", and if I tried "hypermiling", I would not be surprised to get 50 miles. This review emphasizes driving at highway speeds too much, where you don't use all-electric driving unless it's local driving only (for short distances), whereas this vehicle really shines because of the ability to drive locally for weeks without the ICE ever coming on once.
@cbatiau25282 жыл бұрын
@Alfie Tilly Yes, I suspect that this is why 90-95% of T8 Recharge buyers buy these vehicles -- mostly all-electric local driving but without range anxiety on longer trips away from home. The real-world local all-electric range of 40 miles (64 km) and the 19-gallon gas/petrol tank are really good to keep one from going to gas stations very often, even on road trips.

@@StephenFogarty2023 Lmao. I don't understand how people expect car companies to make and keep models that don't sell just because "they are more practical." Volvo have realised that nobody is buying their wagon so they have done what every other company does and canned it. There are drawbacks to this, but consumers have made their choice and companies have responded. Its how the world works.

@@satya.anandakrishnan On a worldwide basis, Volvo wagons are still selling well. The higher height of SUV, does have a benefit for some people. However many smaller SUV are FWD only Absolutely no off road ability. In many / most cases, a similar size wagon, or the hatchback, that the SUV is based on, has more cargo room v the SUV version of that same vehicle. And most SUV have very little off road ability, due to very basic driveline systems. A lot of people buy SUV, on the basis that they “intend” to go off road, but they never do, and their vehicle has very little off road ability anyway. People buying an SUV style of vehicle, is definitely a popular trend at the moment. Most people have NFI, so there is most definitely a “sheeple” factor, of a huge number of people buying an SUV style of vehicle, even when a wagon or something else, would actually be better for them.

I’d suggest another competitor in the class is the Discovery Sport. The little doodad under the mirror is the external temperature sensor. Most European vehicles have them located under the mirror. Not good when parked over a hot road but there you go. Japanese vehicles usually have them mounted low in the front of the vehicle - where they collect engine heat when stopped. So there’s no perfect location. Those cameras are rubbish - the worst I’ve seen. Have you noticed that in (almost) all vehicles the window test passes when there is a two-section glass but when it’s one piece, it generally fails to go all the way down. This is due to the larger glass size not being able to fit down past the curve in the rear door for the wheel arch. So there are trade offs in both designs.

Great review - I have had mine for 4 months. Do daily commutes to work largely on hybrid mode and only had to use petrol on a couple of long drives like Melb to Adelaide. Extremely comfortable, roomy, and tows very well. Battery gets an estimated 53klms. Some reviews say range is about 80klms and others say 53klms. When not using electric it is thirsty. Steering needs to be firmer. A question for owners or Paul - general web charging recommendations say charge to 80% for battery longevity. Does anyone know what Volvo’s recommendations are for this car. Given it’s a manual process to stop charging at 80%, it will be pretty difficult to not go past 80%. Would be good if Volvo had on car controls to set charge limits.
@Truth_seeker_2411 ай бұрын
The charge controller inside the car handles all that. Just have the charging made available to the car regularly and the internal controller will handle all the charging. For battery life the packs are not drained fully in each commute I think so although shows 0% I’m pretty sure it’s like 20% to maintain battery life. Just plug-in every time you can and enjoy!

I really don’t want an SUV, but considering there’s zero PHEV or EV wagons, and I need the space, this is seriously looking like a good contender.

V60 wagon recharge, dude
@MisterWrench2 жыл бұрын
@@ystebadvonschlegel3295 yeah if they come to Australia. The only wagon Volvo offer over here now is the V60 Cross Country.

I'm totally with you, love wagons but currently looking at this or the genesis gv70 3.5

At 3:06 it’s the ambient air temperature sensor 🙃

Hi Paul. With the 7.9 on the combustion engine was that in hybrid mode ?

Haha my 2012 XC60 has those booster seats but I appreciate your enthusiasm for the cleverness of the feature. It’s a bugger they deleted some of the performance gear from it - the T8 Polestar at least looks as fast as the T8 is! But then, it’d be a buzz being in such a sleeper-looking car and see people’s reactions!

A good choice for someone wanting a quality SUV without needing a pretentious badge.

Great review, thanks! I drive this car here in the US and we get the new turbocharged only engine ( the previous version was turbo- and supercharged). Are you guys getting a different engine or is it a small oversight? Love the car!
@cbatiau25282 жыл бұрын
yes, we have the new ER version as well, in the US, and having extensively test-driven the pre-ER version, I can say that the ER version without the supercharger is MUCH better in terms of drivetrain functionality and performance and smoothness and capability...
@OG_Horsechuck2 жыл бұрын
Mistake. The T8 Recharge version DOES NOT have supercharger. Only mild hybryds still do have (this time) electric supercharger .

The little black nub under the mirror is an outside temp sensor

Loved how Paul lost his sh*t with the performance of this thing. He looked genuinely nervous, even scared a little. Fun 😀

Hey Paul that little doodad under the side mirror is the ambient temperature sensor :)

I'm pretty sure that thing under the side mirror is a spray nozzle to wash the side camera

2022 XC60 T8 Recharge PS owner, love interior and exterior styling but we need a proper EV. This drivetrain is a love hate affair and turning into more hate despite what non owning fanboys says. Driving this in pure is frustrating since unless you granny drive and stay under kickdown, this confused drivetrain will often revert to gas when it wants. Drive in power and it drinks petrol like an F150 V8. You are always wishing you had 300-400km EV range so you can enjoy the drive. I'm waiting for the XC60 full EV as next vehicle. I may get the Polestar 2 until Volvo delivers on a proper EV.
@cbatiau25282 жыл бұрын
sounds like you have the 2022.0 version of the T8; I knew to wait for the 2022.5 version, which is the "Extended Range" version, and which is night-and-day better. The 2022.0 version has a much smaller battery pack, a supercharger, and a horrible drive-train shift/experience; I test-drove a couple, so know how bad they are. The ER versions are superb, seriously; no need for Polestar upgrade, which is a waste.

FYI. Went to a Volvo dealership in California and 10+ Polestar 2's we're their because of computer issues.
