2023 Watch Day - Yanacancha-Huaquis, Peru (Spanish)

Located on the Nor-Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve in the highlands of Lima, the site is an example of a traditional water infrastructure built by the pre-Inca Yauyos culture, which includes a series of dams, reservoirs, and channels to divert, filter, and retain spring water and glacier melt.
On June 29, 2023, the Watch Day at the Yanacancha - Huaquis Cultural Landscape in Miraflores (Yauyos), Peru, welcomed over 100 local residents to share, appreciate and show the valuable cultural heritage of their community. The activity took place as part of the Limpia Acequia. This typical celebration worships water as well as land and includes the communal cleaning of the canals and offerings to the puquiales (springs).
During the event, children from the Miraflores community received quenas and zampoñas, wind instruments of Andean origin, as a way to make them part of the singing and dancing that comes with the festivity-the Watch Day also focused on the promotion of the shactada tradition (an act of consuming and sharing meals prepared by the community) by organizing a contest of dishes and foods in close coordination with women of the community. All participants received a clay pot with the intention of preserving local knowledge and keeping this tradition alive.
This video not only focuses on the Watch Day activities but also has helped to capture the memories of the Limpia Acequia through its participants and share their stories about the origins and changes of the celebration over the years.
Currently, WMF Peru has started the project Conservation, Enhancement, and Sustainable Management of the Yanacancha-Huaquis Cultural Landscape executed by Instituto de Montaña.

Watch Day - Paisaje Cultural Yanacancha-Huaquis, Perú
Ubicado en la Reserva Paisajística Nor-Yauyos Cochas, en la sierra de Lima, el sitio es un ejemplo de infraestructura hídrica tradicional construida por la cultura preinca Yauyos, que incluye una serie de presas, reservorios y canales para desviar, filtrar y retener el agua de manantial y el deshielo de los glaciares.
El 29 de junio de 2023, el Watch Day del Paisaje Cultural Yanacancha - Huaquis en Miraflores (Yauyos), Perú, dio la bienvenida a más de 100 residentes locales para compartir, apreciar y mostrar el valioso patrimonio cultural de su comunidad. La actividad se desarrolló en el marco de la Limpia Acequia, una celebración típica que rinde culto tanto al agua como a la tierra e incluye la limpieza comunitaria de los canales y ofrendas a los puquiales (manantiales).
Durante el evento, niños de la comunidad de Miraflores recibieron quenas y zampoñas, instrumentos de viento de origen andino, como una forma de hacerlos parte del canto y baile que acompaña a la festividad. El Watch Day también se centró en la promoción de la tradicional shactada (acto de consumir y compartir comidas preparadas por la comunidad) organizando un concurso de platos y alimentos en estrecha coordinación con las mujeres de la comunidad. Todos los participantes recibieron una olla de barro con la intención de preservar el conocimiento local y mantener viva esta tradición.
Este video no solo se centra en las actividades del Watch Day, sino que también ha ayudado a capturar los recuerdos de la Limpia Acequia a través de sus participantes y compartir sus historias sobre los orígenes y cambios de la celebración a lo largo de los años.
A la fecha, WMF Perú ha iniciado el proyecto Conservación, Mejoramiento y Manejo Sostenible del Paisaje Cultural Yanacancha-Huaquis ejecutado por el Instituto de Montaña.
