for those who don’t know me, i’m a current student at the University of Washington. i am a former 3-time tmea all-stater and am making these recordings as reference videos for current high schoolers preparing for the audition process. imo, the more videos to reference, the better 🙂. if you have any questions, feel free to comment below or dm me on instagram @akshatmusic._ and i’m happy to help.
some quick tips for this etude:
1. make your grace notes consistent in length in similar passages (ex: m18 and 22, m2 and 14 and 26 and so on). i don’t do a great job of this, so do better than me.
2. bring out all of the extra markings. this etude has a ton of style, and the worst thing you can do (aside from not refining your technique with a met) is to neglect all of the style markings.
3. if you haven’t done so already, read the errata on the tmea performance guide website. there are multiple different printed versions of this etude each with subtle differences (some have different NOTES), and the errata clears all of that up.
4. create a breathing plan. if you’re someone who sometimes has a hard time making it all the way to the printed breath marks (like me), find good places in between to take breaths. this etude thankfully has a lot of extra places where you can sneak in breaths pretty naturally, so plan all that out so you don’t fumble that in the audition room
5. practice
i hope this video helps! best of luck for auditions!
