Reb Bull, I think you put Danny Riccardo in the Ref Bull car, then you put Lawson in the Visa car. Both Christian and Helmut get what they want. 1/2 a year for Daniel to prove himself, and he gets along with Max. Lawson gets 6th months experience in the Visa car without the pressure of being in the Red Bull trying to win a constructors championship.

The issue with the gamble was not that GR tried it or that Merc allowed it but they should have let Lewis know Russell was trying it early on so Lewis could decide how fast to close the gap. It was the lack of clear comms that bothered me, not that George tried a hail mary and it worked (DSQ aside).

Most memorable is the George Russell DQ. However Merc's strategy on Lewis does raise some eyebrows. Can't wait to hear what they say.

For the overtaking issues in Spa/Monza and other low downforce tracks they could put rules in place for a minimum rear wing angle, it’ll help create more drag which would slow down the cars in the straights and bring DRS back into contention for help with over takes, but also at Spa it could help for more dive bombs pulling out the slipstream into the bus stop
@mastak6964 ай бұрын
50:30 you can sense that Tom Bellingham is annoyed to see Lewis Hamilton win. I mean there is barely any credit given to Lewis in this podcast. He aced the start. Got Perez and then got Charles. Kept the tyres very well. Perfectly followed the team strategy and deserved the win.

Lewis drove a perfect race, gets shafted by his own team and everyone is sad for George? Screw George, Mercedes doesn't deserve Lewis.
@Alex-md6bu4 ай бұрын
If you look at the strategies of Lewis vs George, George has been given the better strategy of the two more often than not, during 21 most of the time when Lewis was behind George while having the better strategy/ tyres he was told not to overtake/ George won’t let him go even though strategy difference…. Do I believe they have different cars no but that is undeniably true….

I liked this race, there were lots of different strategies, lots of interesting battles and overtakes, lots of tension and suspense. At no point was this race a snoozefest just cause there were fewer overtakes overall than at some other tracks. I'd rather see fewer overtakes where the overtakes are really earned, and lots of close racing, than see dozens of meaningless DRS overtakes on the straights and endless rules lawyering every time someone actually tries to defend
@freemanpt4 ай бұрын
Regarding pole position, that is the outcome of qualifying… so it should be Max. Then, and only then, the grid penalty is applied and the starting position is updated. It should be simple. So, starting on pole is not equal to winning pole position on quali. :)

“Make them slower but exactly the same” - never thought I would say this but bring back grooved tyres? No way it could happen with the weight of the current blunderbusses but food for thought!
@MatthewKennedy-b4v4 ай бұрын
Good point about a more worn tire weighing less. Since the tires are one of the few things that teams have little to no control over (including variations occuring during the creation process), maybe the cars should be weighed without them? This would also eliminate the grey area of picking up rubber on an in lap.

On Hamilton, the team was telling him to save fuel. Obviously, they did the calculations on weight. They also put on new tyres. Both of these reasons are why George was underweight - fuel and tyres.

Yeah, it's pissing me off. Lewis drove a literal perfect race, with his team totally fking him sideways by not telling him about George when they knew with 14 laps to go that George was staying out. Bono NEVER told Lewis that he had to pass George until Lewis literally was right behind him, he said "free to race, just leave each other space." insanity.
@roxannelyson77154 ай бұрын
Why is this so hard for fans at any level? The regs specifically state that the 3 top finishers will proceed to Parc ferme. The actual pole position, and all positions, are not fully determined until qualifying positions are established THEN modified based on any race penalties factored in, such as mechanical penalties or sporting penalties. Think about Austria a couple of years ago. We all thought Lewis got pole, but new evidence gave him a penalty and he lost pole. Think about Monaco where Charles initially got pole, but because of his mechanical problems, there wasn't a pole at all.

the fact is, no other car did the cooldown lap and they made weight. Also, the team tried weighing the car without properly draining the fuel per the rules, and they're not new to this process. They knew they were underweight. Even Toto's lackluster response for George winning to me shows he knew something was up.

Strange Mercedes keeps getting DSQ for illegal cars... George today, Lewis because of his plank and Lewis because of his wing... Yes, I know, the wing was illegal by so little, it's practically nothing and there's no way its intentional but it seems to me like the team that keeps getting DSQ is Mercedes. Not even Haas or Williams or someone who you might consider they lack the operational maturity... No, the same team that kept winning for 8 years straight. One of the largest in F1.

I wholeheartedly disagree that spa would have been boring without George. It was a fascinating race and I was on the edge of my seat every lap because someone in formula A was right on the back of someone else threatening a move and we could see moves were possible and it was very exciting to see. Lots of overtaking doesn’t necessarily mean exciting. I was thoroughly encapsulated by this race.

Since they extended the DRS zone down Kemmel Straight (in 2017 or 18, from memory) we either had DRS trains or motorway style overtakes. It sucked. Because everyone knows the tow and DRS zone is so powerful, then everyone waits for that place to overtake. That's the problem, everyone is waiting for it and thus the benefit of looking for overtakes elsewhere diminishes. I'd bin off the Kemmel DRS all together and have three shorter DRS zones on the track: - keep the start/finish straight zone; this gets drivers a little closer for the long run to Les Combes - A new zone from No Name through to Pouhon; this gets drivers a little closer for the Fagnes/piff paff and Stavelot sections, and thus closer to the run to the Bus Stop - Stavelot 2 through to Blanchimont, or Blanchimont into the Bus Stop. This gives drivers a leg up into the last corner. This combination of changes to the DRS zones turns the one highly likely overtaking spot (in theory) into Les Combes into multiple probable spots. And a chance for drivers to use their imagination into places like Bruxelles, Piff Paff, and La Source without fear of getting mugged down Kemmel. You could always tighten the Les Combes entry as well, but that may be sacrilege
