I consider myself an expert on the Marmot Tungsten 1p UL. Been using it for 4+ years. Been thru every condition possible. Love it! I also have the ZPacks Plex Solo. The Marmot is my go to tent for many reasons, ie, relatively light weight, spacious for a 1p, small footprint, can be set up fly first if you have the accompanying footprint, bomb proof if you guyline it out, spacious vestibule, good airflow with the top air vent opened (minimal/no condensation), not bulky, doesn’t sag when wet, affordable, totally free standing, easy to setup even in the wind, warmer than a single wall, can be used without a fly for ultimate star gazing, etc… The only category the Plex Solo wins IMO is weight. It’s less than 1lb. Hard to beat that! For the type of hardcore backpacking I do and for the level of comfort and security I need, the Marmot is just more practical. If I was a thru hiker looking for the ultimate ultralight setup, then the Plex Solo would get my vote. Great review! I always say gear is very personal. Good luck finding what works for you!

Is there enough room in the Tungsten for your gear as well? If if I left my pack in the vestibule, but brought in stuff sacks that had my gear? I want a one man, but also want my gear inside ;) I’m tossing this up against the 2p version as well as the 1 and 2p Copper Spurs as I can get a great deal on these right now.

@@jasonish I keep my pack, shoes, poles, and cook system out in the vestibule. If it rains i cover my pack in the pack rain cover and stack everything on top so it doesn’t get wet. On the inside of the tent I store stuff sacks, extra cloths, ditty bags, etc. On the very top of the inside of the tent is a loop. I attach a very small carabiner to it then attach my wide brim hat lanyard to it. I can then store my sunglasses, bandana, hiking gloves, etc in the hat. I’m 6’ and have ample room in this tent. On the vestibule door side I lay my hiking clothes next to my sleep system to stay dry and ready to put on in the morning. I’m a huge fan of using a Thermarest Z Lite Sol 1/2 Foam Pad (36”) as a sit pad, yoga pad, gear dump pad, and most importantly as additional padding under my inflatable pad. It gives additional warmth (increases R factor), prevents slippage, and can be used as a wedge to level out your sleep area when set up on sloping, unleveled ground. We camp above tree line a lot and the wind can be fierce. I use 3 guylines. One at each corner of the head end and the other at the left foot end. In addition I always attach the Velcro attachments on the rain fly to the tent poles. Makes for a very sturdy setup. Lastly, I swapped out the shorter tent stakes that came with the tent with MSR Groundhog Stakes. They are longer and can take a beating! Some might think all this is overkill but there is nothing worse than not being prepared and properly set up for when a storm rolls in and the wind kicks up in the middle of the night. I’ve learned my lesson! Hope this helps!

Happy to see the Zpacks Plex Solo Lite as the top UL shelter at 11.7 ounces it's extremely light. I made two upgrades to this shelter, first being the mesh storage pocket and the magnetic door fasteners instead of the toggles . Awesome video Justin! (still waiting for the info on that lid)! 🤣

I'm using the SMD Gatewood Cape, a lighter, no mesh/no floor design and it's a great fit for my 6'3", but I think I'm ready to upgrade to the Lunar Solo for the mesh and keep the Gatewood for shoulder and winter seasons where bugs aren't an issue.

Since I'm not from US, could you share a bit what weather conditions you faced? Rain and wind? and if so how strong? Heat? How about the condensation in rainy or cold days(when you can't leave the doors open)?

@@felicegreece Temperatures ranged from just below freezing to 80F during the day. Lots more rain than usual this year on the CO trail as well, as it rained nearly every night, along with quite a few nights of hail and heavier thunderstorms. I probably didn’t experience much more than 20mph winds as I tried to set it up in as sheltered spots as I could, but I never had any concerns about the wind, it felt extremely sturdy. I didn’t bring the guy out lines, which would have helped with the condensation more than anything. It absolutely got very wet on the inside when raining and cold, but dried out very quickly during the day, I never had to set up a wet tent at night. There is almost no way you would be able to keep the tent fully dry, so quick drying is the best you can ask for.

Always fun to watch your videos! I was this close to buying the Plex Solo or the Altaplex. I'm 6, 1" and toss/turn a lot during the night, so wasn't sure the Plex would keep me from bumping the walls and getting condensation all over my footbox. I've had an Xmid Pro 2 I love since release, but with a rectangular footprint of 80"x100", it's been tough to pitch in smaller tent sites on a number of occasions. Getting something with a smaller footprint while still taking into account comfort/usability and being on the UL side of things became my priorities. I ended up settling on the Zpacks Offset Solo. A smidge lighter than my X-mid Pro 2, takes up slightly less space to pitch than even the Altaplex (both dimensionally, but also with those longer guylines), and it ought to be extremely roomy with many of the handy convenience features you might find lacking in lighter tents. Figured I'd put that out there for anyone enjoying reading the comments:). I'm curious about your thoughts on the Offset Solo as well. Take care and thanks again for all of the great videos!

They are slightly heavier, but not by much, but my favorite Ultralight tent is the DiPole Li from Tarp Tent. Spacious interior, lots of ventilation and the ends are raised so no condensation on my down sleeping bag. Awesome tent and the owner is great to work with. I am looking for a free-standing tent, so will try your suggestions. Thanks.

@@URCA35 Not in heavy rains. Being a single walled tent, I doubt any would work well in heavy rain because of the force of rain knocking off condensation. The flaps over the window work well to prevent rain getting in. I suspect this tent works as well as any other ultralight tent, maybe better because of the roominess of this design.

Hey Justin - super curious why we backpackers don’t consider bikepacking tents more often bc the poles just fit better in a pack. The Nemo Dragonfly 1P or Hubba 1P (bikepacking versions) is my next purchase for a freestanding tent (already have Durston 1P). I just love the shorter poles and won’t be fussing over mere grams.

Hey Justin, always look forward to these reviews especially now that I am getting my dog ready for backpacking next year. On that note, how much larger of a footprint does the Dustron Pro 2 take vs. The Lunar Solo? Dog is a 26lbs whippet who tends to sleep in a ball (unless it is hot - then she is like a dead cockroach). I haven’t seen either in person as of yet but want to make sure there is room for both of us.

A person plus 26lb dog will fit in either tent comfortably. The Durston inner tent is a little bigger than the whole area of the Lunar solo. You can probably fit you, your dog and your gear inside the Durston, but will have to store gear in the vestibule of the Lunar solo if your dog is inside.

Lots of room in the Pro 2 for both of you with some to spare. You' might have to store your pack in the vestibule with the Lunar Solo but you'd have a lot of room for the dog even if she's sprawled.

Argalii Rincon 2p is my pick. Has a removable stove jack too so can be used in winter. It's light weight and sets up with 1 trekking pole. They sell a half insert or full insert for it. $240 dollars for tent and $135 to $150 for insert. A little spendy but having the removable stove jack means I don't need another tent for cold weather camping.

Most freestanding tents that come with their own footprint (whether it is purchased separately or not), are designed to be able to pitch it with the rainfly first. The Big Agnes Copper Spur is an example. The argument would not be that you can't pitch them rainfly first, but rather the increase in weight and pack space when adding the footprint. I'd also say having to buy them separately is not cool.

Hilleberg makes free-standing tents that set up all as one, without exposing the inner to rain. But they are Hella expensive. And there is the option for some of the ZPacks tents for external poles that make them freestanding as well. Albeit an additional expense to an already pretty spendy option. But they do exist.

I love winter backpacking so the Samaya Assault 2 Ultra and MSR Advance Pro are my 2 top picks for weighing under 3 lbs. The only downside for the MSR is no optional vestibule which the Assault 2 has. Also, I’d personally prefer the Assault 2 Ultra over the Samaya 2.0 mostly due to weight and easier setup in windier conditions.

I wouldn't mind a Plex Solo lol. I'm still using the og smaller Lanshan 1 (~$170) and NatureHike Vik 1 ($99) for 1P tents. Hard to spend on something with a bigger footprint when these still work. I've been tarp & bivy camping but will probably still use the Vik 1 in the Sierra with all the granite and mosquitoes. Lanshan is nice to mix and match with the bivy. Can leave the inner bug net at home.

Should mention the size of the pad you're using when demonstrating these tents. The Plex Solo for example is 28" interior at the ends, so those of us who like a 30" long pad, it's a no go. It's easy to look at your picture and people tend to look at the middle of the tent.

A problem that I have had with many of the 1-person tents is that a person can't sit up and turn without brushing against the sides. The ones with a longer cross pole, such as Tiger Wall or Copper Spur, have more room for the upper body. Also the x-mid, though it takes up a large footprint.

Hammocks are far superior to tents in treed areas, imo. But if I need to tent camp in areas with lack of trees, I prefer tents with highter ceilings at the head and foot ends. The disqualifies the Lanshan and Zpacks 1 p tents. Durston X-mid series are my choice

Why not the X-mid pro 1? Plenty of room for a one person tent, excellent cross ventilation, easy pitch, and huge vestibules to store gear. I have one and never feel cramped in it: lots of space at the head, feet, and on the side too. I also have a plex solo lite and I do feel a little cramped in it, but take it instead of the Durston when weight is my highest priory.

Other than alpineering-focused tents, there aren't a lot of freestanding single walled options. I think we will see more over the next several years though. I am personally looking forward to the when the X-Dome is released as a single-walled version. The Tarptent ArcDome might be a single-wall tent, which would be cool. Might be smart for Tarptent and Durston to collude and one release a double-walled dome tent and one a single-walled. I will also be picking up a Tarptent Double Rainbow when it comes out in a single-walled polyester version. It can be set-up in a freestanding mode.

Take a look at the Naturehike Cloud Wind, or, my preferred style of tent, the VIC Ultralight. The former is $219 and the latter is $119. They usually include weight and stakes in their weights and they usually aren't needed or can be replaced with much lighter (and better) options which radically reduces the weight. They're a great deal on well proven products. You can always pitch a free standing tent fly-first; you just have to use a footprint. You can make your own 'frame trap' from a little bit of cord and loop as well...

The Lanshan 1 Pro is a lot better, and bigger inside, than that old Lanshan 1 you've got there. It looks like you've got the old version of the Lanshan 1 as well, which must be at least 4 years old. They havent made them in that colour for years. After 2021 Lanshan 1s are bigger and better, and the Pro covers the gripes you have with the 'normal' Lanshan 1, which, as you say, is double skin. You even have the Lanshan 1 Pro linked in your favourite gear, but went with that old non-Pro. Confusing! Interestingly, the SMD Solo is only just over 200 quid direct from SMD, compared to the Lanshan 1 Pro at around 130 or more, depending on when and where you get it, so here in the UK the prices are actually closer and the SMD starts to make more sense given its SilPoly fly. But then for that price here in the UK I'd go for a Trekkertent Drift 1, which I don't think you can get in North America, but is SilPoly, and made in Scotland for Scottish weather (and Scottish midges).

You're correct that I do have a very old Lanshan 1 and that the newer versions have some great upgrades like increased space and the double L zippers.

The Lunar Solo is by far the worst tent I have ever had!!! These reviews are very subjective! To me it was hard to make a perfect pitch, small and had tons of condensation.

This is some seriously poor advice. I've owned the plex solo and Lanshan. Theres is no way the plex solo should be recommended above the Durston Xmid 1 pro. The xmid offers far more functional space, including much better headroom at both ends. It is longer and eliminates possibility of touching wet walls at the head and foot. Its sturdier, more weather resistant, offers better protection due to a vastly superior door and vestibule system. The rainbow door of the plex solo falls into the wet and muddy ground while you are forced to climb over it. The lack of a zipper door is also an extremely frustrating experience. The xmid is easier to get a good pitch with. As for the Lanshan why the heck would you suggest that over the Durston xmid 1 double wall? The xmid is a far superior tent than the cheap chinese lanshan and very affordable on a budget. Yes they require 2x poles but you can get the poles Durston provides if you dont like taling trekking poles. Its a small price to pay for superior equipment. Can't agree with these suggestions from an objective standpoint at all.

Hey Justin - super curious why we backpackers don’t consider bikepacking tents more often bc the poles just fit better in a pack. The Nemo Dragonfly 1P or Hubba 1P (bikepacking versions) is my next purchase for a freestanding tent (already have Durston 1P). I just love the shorter poles and won’t be fussing over mere grams.

Because big brands don’t advertise with the poles packed separate from the body and fly. Once you get rid of the horrendous sack that most tents are sold with, you’ll have lots more space. Pack the poles on the outside of your backpack
