When the problem is an aerodynamic design flaw under the car, nothing on top is going to fix it. The shark fin might make some difference, but it' not going to be enough to counter the giant wing on the bottom. On the bright side, car safety has been something NASCAR and consistently taken more seriously than other things in their sport, so I suspect we will see some changes going in to next season with the side of the car and the underbody. Who knows, this could be a blessing in disguise that could end up improving other issues the car has in terms of the racing..
@griffinfaulkner35144 ай бұрын
What's odd to me is that this blowover issue seems to be exclusive to NASCAR. Practically every high-level GT racing category runs a flat bottom and none of them respond anything like this during a high-speed spin. Hell, even open-wheel cars like F1 or Indycar typically need to take some sort of hit while they're sliding sideways to kick them into a true blowover. Maybe it's the open windows? Going sideways at that speed spikes the pressure in there and might act as a giant parachute above the center of gravity that pulls the car up enough for the floor to catch and send it the rest of the way over.
@merlotpapi49304 ай бұрын
Thank you for your unsubstantiated, uneducated opinion. I'm sure you know more about this car than the engineers who design and work on it every day. So here's an interesting question. Would Berry's wreck have been easier on him if there was still grass there and the car tumbled instead of sliding for a half-mile on its roof and going upside down into the wall at 120? Basically, what's worse, this or Preece last year?
@druebernardi48414 ай бұрын
Preece last year was worse. I think most drivers have said going upside down and sliding isn't bad, and Berry said on MRN last night the hit to the wall wasn't bad either. The tumbling is multiple impacts at weird angles, and IIRC the speed Preece was flipping cause some of the blood vessels in his eyes to burst and gave him red eyes for a few days.
@Moose63404 ай бұрын
@@druebernardi4841 That's fair. I was mainly thinking about that hit to the wall, but if Berry said that it wasn't too bad a hit then that works. Still, they have GOT to do something about the Gen 7 getting airborne. Haven't seen this since the days of the wing on the COT.
@druebernardi48414 ай бұрын
@@Moose6340 Junior made a good point on his podcast. He mentioned the flat bottoms, but he also said the bottom of the doors, in the rocker panel area, is more rounded than it was Late Gen 4 through Gen 6 and that might be inviting more air under the car than a 90 degree sharp bend at the bottom.
@griffinfaulkner35144 ай бұрын
@@druebernardi4841I don't think the flat bottom by itself is to blame, considering I've never heard of a side-on NASCAR-style blowover in any of the top GT categories. I think it's the combination of open windows and no wheel well vents pulling the car far enough up for the flat bottom to catch enough air to be a problem. It doesn't help that Daytona's apron is incredibly uneven, so you're already giving the car a bit of a kick even before the underbody comes into play.
@merlotpapi49304 ай бұрын
Berry was completely fine in this crash, I don't know what "better" means here. He said it was way worse looking than what it actually felt. Regardless, flipping is how a blocky stock car dissipates energy. When it catches air, it acts like a parachute, slowing it down completely. The flipping on open pavement is good for the driver. The worst crashes are hitting a wall flush with the car, usually on the side. That's the highest g-force load, especially before the SAFER barriers existing. Everybody here screaming and crying about flips literally have no idea what they're talking about.
