It's always close in Barcelona - and this Friday was no exception. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was fastest on soft tyres in FP2, fractionally ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz - but it was Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen who headed the long runs (ahead of McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris). What are the prospects for qualifying and the race? Peter Windsor looks at the key elements of Friday practice - and at the directions to which they point.

Your long run analysis is always useful, but I think it would be much easier to see the trends if you showed them as lines on a graph per driver (different colours) - lap time vs lap number. The odd outlier would be easier to ignore, the general trend and how lap time varies with lap number would stand out. A simple job in Excel, Open Office, Google sheets etc. Just a thought.

I know it's a hypothetical parallel universe but I can't help but wonder what would have happened to the grid if Ferrari had just kept Vettel beyond 2020... we still may have had him on the grid, Carlos may still have been at McLaren with his stock being as high as ever rather than getting shafted by Ferrari and harshly dumped back down the field. Ricciardo's career may never have tanked by taking his seat, Piastri would have likely taken Ocon's seat and we'd have had two aussies at Alpine. I can't help thinking that's a more interesting grid than what we have now.
@youbetu18
@youbetu18 3 ай бұрын
Why is that more interesting? I think Piastri at McLaren is the best thing that has happened to F1 since Max Lando and Leclerc joined. Vettel leaving is alright, and I’m German and a big fan, he was done, wouldn’t have competed with Charles anymore now.
@Cuffers93
@Cuffers93 3 ай бұрын
@@youbetu18 I don't know. Maybe it isn't. I'm half German too but wasn't really ever a Vettel fan myself. But yeah, I never really rated him as highly as what he achieved. It just seems a shame what's happened to Carlos is my main point. And maybe Ricciardo wouldn't have lost himself if he'd have stuck with Alpine - we won't know. Cyril Abiteboul's warning to him about leaving Renault turned out to be even more painfully true than anyone expected.

@@Cuffers93 I thought Vetterl would catch schumacher tbh but then he just couldnt compete with Hamilton in the years it was tight (if that was the car or the driver is always hard to say, even though I being a fan always say the Merc was the reason xD) I so much agree that its a shame with Carlos. I genuinely think Leclerc and Max are the best drivers of the grid at the moment so for Carlos to keep up with Leclerc the way he does shows his level and he is great off the track too. but its business, he'd deserve the Red Bull seat but thats political, Merc is only offering short term in hope for Verstappen, and that already leaves him out of options. As a german I hope he chooses Sauber and the Audi project. but yea lets see.
@Cuffers93
@Cuffers93 3 ай бұрын
@@youbetu18 I think Hamilton was just too good for him really. That Ferrari in '17-18 was good enough to compete for the title. Although Ferrari also weren't as slick an operation, so there's that. I won't mention the Ferrari strategists! Yeah unfortunately Sainz is stuffed sadly, Verstappen won't be going anywhere but Merc want Antonelli. Perez being both a number two to Max and the money he brings from being marketable to Mexico is what gives him the Red Bull seat unfortunately.

Saturday.22nd June will be spectacular viewing and provide us with the most exciting Qualifying session of the season to date, probably the closest too. It’s between McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Max in his Red Bull Racing machine. Any one of the seven could potentially clinch the Pole Position spot and 1 tenth could blanket the protagonists. Nothing can be left on the table, no dropping of the ball allowed, no technical glitches just full beans on new soft tyres and a drop of fuel with the timing of a Rolex and a bucket load of bravado to the point of audacity, the winning combination of man and machine will host bragging rights and the slight advantage of starting 8meters ahead of the next best competition. I’ve been watching formula 1 for 45 years this year and never have I been so excited and no wonder, formula 1 has never been so competitive at the pointy end and the drivers are really going to earn their bread and will need to shave the bottle and finesse to triumph over his rivals. It’s going to be epic visual stimulation for us the viewer and it’s anyone’s guess as to which driver will come out on top. Max was favourite for race victory before the cars took to track today, I’ve no doubt that has changed with those who make a living dissecting every possible aspect before the weekend and adjust accordingly as the weekend progresses. My view is that we may not see a Red Bull on the front row of Sundays grid. Instead t will be a Papaya and Scuderia Rosso themed front row with silver squeezing in for third. Max will obviously drive the wheels off his RB20 and secure fourth position while his teammate won’t make the top ten in the sister car due to a 3place grid penalty for dubious tactics during the Montreal race in Canada last time out. After hitting the wall he was able to scramble back to the pits sprawling debris all over the circuit when his rear wing and back end of his Red Bull was hanging off the rear while his actions avoided a detrimental safety car for the multi World Champion Verstappen, allowing him to ultimately claim victory at the Canadian Grand Prix last time out. All of this is impossible to predict after the Friday running, maybe Saturdays FP3 will shuffle the positions again as the hottest Qualifying of 2024 and for the last 24 plus months, plays out in possible changing conditions just to further spice things up. This is not to be missed and sets up a race that will be hard fought and strategic given Barcelona is a multi stop race split into 3 or 4 possible stints. Plenty of action to be seen and nails bitten to the quick in lounge rooms across the globe. Don’t miss Qualifying and the race Saturday and Sunday night in Australia on Fox Sports Channel 506 and Stream live on Kayo Sports available on all good platforms. KZbin and the F1 Official Channel stream with slight delays. Get everyone gathered for this epic event and enjoy responsibly. 👀🤯💥🤪🤫🥰🤐❤️🫵🏼👀

@@MoneyMan-pr8xw its only not been the same for certain fans. They are die hard fans of one particular driver, not the sport or even F1. Ive seen most of them only start watching and stay because of that driver. It’s not the sport or team that attracted them in the first place. I’ve been a die hard fan of F1 longer than any driver and many teams currently on the grid. Motorsports, racing, the cars, the tracks, etc are what attracted to F1 me not a driver. Many have come and gone in my time watching, yet I’m still here. Many of those fanboys won’t be when that driver retires. Given the totality of the situation and that season, it’s not been too much different for me than other controversial year. Again, I’m tied to the sport not a driver or even team. So I wasn’t, and still aren’t, invested in either of those drivers like their fanboys are. The far bigger stain on the sport, for me, has been the fanboys of that perceived wronged driver. The toxicity I have seen from them towards every single one of the other drivers that dares to rival their hero on track has been is unrivaled. Death treats toward those drivers, their family and online attacks towards members of their team are not the same and far worse than what comes from any other drivers fanboys. The hate that started with Alonso, then Massa, Vettel, Rosberg, Max and now George is far worse a stain. Leclerc will be their next target, unless he turns out to be a Bottas and not be much of an on track threat. Merc are finally starting to understand those fans were only fans of the team when everything went right for their driver. When it went wrong, no matter the actual fault, it was always the teams. The conspiracy theories they have towards the team right now are a true stain on F1. It will always be talked about far more than it should be because it will always be brought up by those fanboys when there is no reason to, just like in this situation. For those of us who aren’t fanboys of that driver bring it up constantly like this does more harm than good. We made up our minds about the situation based on all the publicly available info. With no new facts or arguments, bringing it up constantly in this manner only comes across as sour grapes.

They were incredibly tight margins, and so they are now. When we see a regular race at a circuit that RB dominated last year and have the Ferraris and McLarens close, then we celebrate, not before. And they wouldnt do it in a way that anybody would find out either...it would be easy to make lewis look like an absolute clown show but instead he still looks rather competitive with his " sabotaged car " he just doesnt have that final touch anymore lately ... that "clutch" its not there...

@@dco1019 If people think that races are not fixed, like Abu Dhabi 21, then they haven’t got a clue.

@@PAULDOUGLAS08 I disagree with that too...but that wasn't what we are talking about. In fact I think its very clear that Lewis is still getting all the support from the team...just the clutch gene isn't there anymore. He's making mistakes when everything is on the line and the car is on the absolute limit. So in Q.....and he's just worse than George when he's not in tune with the car.

Great to see Lewis up front in a very competitive session. Hope he can keep that form into quali and the race.

I'm surprised you don't seem to know Flavio, Bruno or old man Stroll that well! It makes perfect sense to bring Flavio in.

The ban was overturned by a French court on appeal, so not an FIA decision. They have to abide by the court ruling.

@@Mandykiss4500 I realize that…. It’s just that there’s 8 billion people on earth… to include a proven cheater looks incredibly bad to F1 in my opinion… to think they couldn’t find any other person without such a horrid past out of 8 billion of us left to pick from…

Talking of James at Merc and his comments, when asked if it was a eureka moment when the car recently started to respond as it should do and behaving more predictably he said no, it was more of a ‘how could we have been so dumb! I really enjoyed the 50 minute interview with him as he was very honest. Fingers crossed they can understand the car now after many years of unpredictability and they can take the fight to RB along with many other teams that have overtaken them this year.

Windsor at his best. Most other F1 coverage, especially Sky, are not informative or entertaining, just formulaic diverse crap. Mr Windsor is the polar opposite. The benefit of his extensive experience and knowledge seeps through in every sentence. Absolute Gem. Also saw him in a documentary about the late Colin Chapman recently, recorded in the 80s. Youthful and knowledgeable, even then. Thank you Mr Windsor, you help me understand more and I continue to learn about F1 AND driving.

The only reason to bring in Flavio is if you plan to try nefarious tactics and want a fall guy. Otherwise why?
