The melons planted in your grow bags on the lane are your hybrid "Armpit Melons" I bet! Also - I think that butterfly visiting your bee balm at the end of the video was a swallowtail. I researched them last year and the ones most people think of are just bright yellow with black stripes and sometimes a blue spot at the rear bottom of the wing. The ones that are mostly black are always female, and the yellow ones with the blue spots at the base of the wing (I'd normally call that the tail - lol) are female also. I thought it was really neat!

Love the garden videos! I do a mix of raised bed, in-ground, and container gardening. This is my third year growing peppers in GreenStalk towers, sixty plants, in four square feet of ground space. I've harvested peppers four times, so far, am harvesting cucumbers and squash on a regular basis, and I've picked a half dozen tomatoes, excluding cherry tomatoes. The pole beans are flowering and beginning to set fruit, and I have cantaloupe and watermelon ripening on the vines. I have a wide assortment of herbs growing and flowering, comfrey, catnip, yarrow, chicory, dill basil, rosemary, parsley, chives, dill, spearmint, peppermint, and cilantro. I also have flowers strategically located throughout the garden to attract pollinators: marigolds, zinnias, asylum, strawflower, cosmos, columbine, zinnias, bachelor button, and more.

If you break the stem of the asparagus off from the crown, push your finger down the stem and break it off from the crown rather than cutting it off, like with rhubarb, it treats it like a pruning and you will get many more new sprouts up .
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! We found that the stems leftover created small fronds and I theorized that was good for the crown but I can see why "pruning" the crown would help too!

No problem at all! I've not grown pumpkins into the grass before, I plan to mow ahead of them but then eventually yes some grasses will try to outcompete the pumpkin leaves. Jess at roots and refuge had success with this variety in a grassy weedy situation so I thought I'd try!

Parsnips are one of my favorite things to grow, and I've grown a lot of them over the years. Both my favorite farmer and my county extension office informed me about the toxicity of the tops so I don't eat them. And I also don't feed them to our chickens. It can feel wasteful because it's a lot of greens, but I'd just rather be safe than sorry on that one. They all go into the compost on our lil' homestead.

Yes that's ideal way to transplant. I got another tip to put the seedling tray on top of the soil they will be transplanted into to match the soil temperature. Just for a few hours/half a day. I wonder if the ants were leaving the bed? I don't see any sign of them now but maybe they are cozy down there!

I have a container of all purpose miracle grow thats 6 years old that I do use on sad plants I want to give 1 last try to. I only feed 1ce to help get a burst of energy to the plant. most times if plant perks up and grows it also roots out to support itself and gets back in shape for rest of the year or it get replaced lol. I only use compost and manure as plant food 99% of the time but some times some things need a little extra help. And I for one think that is just fine lol.

I absolutely love your garden tours! I am an avid fan of parsnips. I tried growing them last year and they were all Woody and LOL I think I planted about the worst possible time in the summer hey ( experimental Gardener here hahaha). I'm still learning but it's okay you learn and you grow right? I have to say every year I always say "I'm never going to plant A garden this year" and it always ends up being double of what I had prior. We Live in Central Texas and the temperature here is starting to get very hot but we have been very blessed this season during spring because we've received some pretty cool temperatures and I think that's why the tomatoes and the cucumbers have exploded. Cow paneling and archways are a must and I'm so happy to have added them last year. Unfortunately I'm running out of room hahaha. Finally put my poor garage Quail outdoors and they are loving it... Okay what's the story behind the rabbit in the house? New breeder?
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 3 ай бұрын
No that rabbit has lived indoors for about a year and a half but somehow he doesn't get shown a lot! He is a breeder for our "pretty bunny" program and he used to live on the front porch. During that SUPER cold dip two winters ago we brought him inside and he never went back out :) he loves to run around the house!! I worried about the parsnips getting woody if I left them in longer, I planted them around 120 days prior to harvest!

Just as an FYI Kelloggs soil is like using straight sand. I think straight sand grows things better! I have never had luck with Kelloggs and I'm not the only one! I can assure you that your sad plant problem is the Kelloggs soil. I would try and top amend with compost or slow/instant release fertilizer
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 ай бұрын
We have purchased two pallets of it and the success has been more consistent than any failure. Our greenstalk with the tomatoes is only kellogg soil from this season and never was amended. Those plants were also started from seed in kellog and never fed. The whole garden was started in seed in Kelloggs and never fed, I'm just noticing some beds need assistance and we have done exactly as you suggested by amending with trifecta plus.

@SageandStoneHomestead

Everything growing on our homestead is foreign and invasive I've learned. I just learned that the white clover is too. We have a lot of buttercup in spring, and Japanese knotweed in fall. The people who lived here before us planted three Bradford Pear trees. We have old tobacco farm land and the recovery of the land is a slow and seemingly impossible task, so we embrace what we can. As long as it has medicinal properties I don't mind. I can mow where I don't want it, that's what we have done for other things like blackberry and it works for us. You should have seen my face when I learned honeybees are introduced and invasive. :(

Hey Heather! I hadn't wanted to say anything when I saw you got a full truckload of the Kelloggs potting soil. I sort of hoped things would be better this year or that it wouldn't happen to you as well. But last year, Jill Winger made a video about all the struggles she had with Kelloggs soil in particular. She even did a series of soil tests to get to the bottom of the problem (something she could clearly afford to do because Redmond Salt sponsors her soil tests). But I would highly recommend watching her video called 'The Surprising Reason I Killed 150 Tomato Seedlings' from about a year ago. Might help shed some light on the issues you're having in some of the beds filled with mostly their soil.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 ай бұрын
It hasn't been all bad, it's been hit or miss. That tomato tower with the Tiny Tim tomatoes is all Kellogg's with nothing more. If it wasn't for the constant rain they wouldn't have gotten diseased and would be beautiful. From what I understand, it's not just one company selling soil that's not quite broken down, it's most of them. Jess at Roots and refuge is having issues with Bacto. Other channels have issues with other companies. The plants in the soil just need available nutrients which was pretty easy to see after a few weeks of some of the beds hosting plants and the solution has been easy thankfully. I'm going to be ordering more of the soil because I think it is good, especially for the price, it's just not going to grow much on it's own. Knowing that is good and we have a lot of success using it this year!!
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 2 ай бұрын
I have seen a lot of creators spreading fear with bagged soils, because it gets clicks. A lot of new gardeners can't see the issue and know immediately how to act to save their plants. What I'm trying to do is offer a solution when these things are noticed, because for many people bagged soil or compost is their one option and they don't usually have ready access to cold manures like we do with rabbit/goat manure. We amended and are seeing improvements, that's all these bagged soils need.
@ourhomesteadclassroom
@ourhomesteadclassroom 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking such a measured, solution-driven approach! I've also seen lots of the conspiracies about bagged soils getting creators lots of clicks (chicken feed, too). And, to be fair, Jill Winger did reach out to Kelloggs and shared their responses as well. And made it clear that she didn't think there was anything malintentioned (or nefarious 😉) was going on. She also offered some similar solutions to fix the nutrient deficiency. And I also saw Jess talk about it in her garden tour. Personally, I've been running into similar problems with Fox Farms soils this season, which are often very highly praised by many KZbin gardeners and have typically been great for me in past years. It just seems like they have been running out of nutrients much faster than in the past, and I'm having to add supplemental nutrition much sooner after planting than I have before. All of my basils were totally stunted in the potting soil I started them in. Got their first true leaves and then just stopped growing. But once I planted them into my raised beds (mostly filled with good compost), they started growing again. I've already decided that next season I am going to spend my budget on good compost and good organic fertilizers and then buy the individual components in bulk to mix my own potting soils. But I know that this isn't always an accessible option for some growers, and that I'm very lucky to have access to those materials in my area. As Jess mentioned, it's just so frustrating to see companies putting out deficient or immature products because new gardeners that don't know any better, or how to remedy the situation, get convinced they are just bad gardeners and then give up. 😔

@@ourhomesteadclassroom I totally agree and you've got a great plan. The first bagged soil I noticed issued with in 2020 was Fox Farms!! I was so surprised. That was only my second-year gardening and I didn't know what was going on. Being able to spot an issue and fix it before the plants succumb is a great and empowering skill. I'd rather have soil that needs more aging or things added to spruce it up than no soil at all. I think the companies probably assume that's the lesser of two evils as well as there's probably no real way to catch up from the surge of demand in 2020.

DE is my ant repellant of choice. ants with wings are the new queens that will search out to make new colonies I think.

Heather have you ever picked up whirly gigs at the dollar store to maybe discourage the birds from picking on your small plants? They really help here in Maine..

That's a great idea. I don't mind the birds once the plants get bigger because they will pick bugs off the plants but when they are seedlings they get damaged! I'll have to pick some up ♥

Sorry, but I watched the snippet where you said a fire truck was needed in the past several times because your expression was so funny lol! I haven't even finished the video but had to stop haha. Unfortunately, I found two squash bugs and some eggs this morning! We've barely gotten started! Will BT help prevent them? I have like 14 pumpkin plants, a bunch of climbing pumpkins, a bunch of zucchini and yada yada yada! Ugh! Last year I had one squash vine borer and that was it!

squash bugs are hard to kill. BT only really takes care of worms like cabbage loopers. What I would do for those is hand-pick plus DE!!

I love your greenhouse! Where did you get it from? I'm in zone 6b, I see you're in 7, how well does it do over winter? We regularly get and maintain 4ft of snow for 4 months and snow stays for 6 months😅

We got it from grower's solution! The plants in the winter have not done great but it hasn't been because of the greenhouse, we used to plant all in-ground and the clay turns to mud in winter which is not great. Excited to use these beds for the first time over winter this winter!

Should the corn/corms be left in the ground now or taken out and planted in the fall? I'm getting ready to pull my elephant garlic soon.

You can leave them! I have volunteers come up every year from corms left in the ground and it's like they know what to do. I've done it both ways though and planted from corms I brought inside as well.
