I've got two ideas for what to do if a hit lands in the Death Can: 1) The hitter has to take their next swing while standing in the can. There is potential for them to topple over due to momentum, but I don't think that's too hazardous. 2) If hitting the Death Can makes you lose a life, maybe getting a ball into the can causes you to lose a point. Only one point, even with the Gold Ball. Potential for shenanigans in close match-ups.
