5-6 lbs is insignificant except on some manufacturers bag sheet. Heck, most riders could stand to lose 5-10 lbs with good diet and exercise. Problem solved and you're healthier for it.

Excellent review. Im trading my 2023 GS Rallye Low for the Africa Twin ES DCT, hopefully next month. I test rode the BMW GS1300 and although it was somewhat slightly better than my 23, the price is now out of my league. its near 30K or over 30K depending on model in the USA. Bye, bye, BMW. Cant wait for my Honda.

For the difference of 14lbs between the R 1300 GS and the Africa Twin Adv Sports ES I would take the weight penalty to get the extra 110km of fuel range any day of the week.

Thanks very much for your detailed and comprehensive review (as usual). I switched over the ATAS 2024 DCT 2 months ago, coming from three years of GS 1250 (standard) ans a few more BMWs in the last 20 years. What thrilled me was the DCT option mainly. I have to admit that from the pure "technical" point of view I'm very satisfied with my choice. At the same time I think the "driving feeling" of the GS is more solid and refined, like it is in a different category from the ATAS. We'll see in the next few months if the Honda is 100% convincing me. Best 🤞👍👍

Thank you for the great review, you answer a lot of questions for many of us I am sure . I would like this , more street focused bike with the smaller wheels but in a slightly smaller package, and I know there are more options out there, but I still haven’t seen one that really stands out from the others. Someone did an article on the Tiger 900 Road focused version of their adventure bike said it was really nice but I think it’s high priced ..thanks again

Based on my experience, DCT may automatically shift gears but learning how to maximize its potential is far from automatic. After hating it, I’ve learned to love it. Thing is, no component is an island, it works in conjunction with the bike as a whole. After manual shifting for fifty years I had to learn that the team of engineers knew what they were doing and that DCT warrants different throttle response and that features like adjustable power delivery, traction control, engine braking, modes and suspension actually make a difference. That said, if adjusting learned behavior isn’t fun, I’d stay away from DCT - it’s not for everyone.

Very nice loving the 19” front and reduced ride height. I decided against buying one a few years ago as I felt uncomfortable being barely able to get my feet down. The DCT is awesome however not for everyone albeit I’m sure once the novelty wears off most are ridden in D as a twist and go rather than playing around with paddle shift same as in a Car.

As a fully qualified dinosaur, in one of his senior moments, I bought a Honda Rebel 1100 DCT. It has much the same engine as in the AT under review. To be frank, I hated the DCT because I never felt fully in control of the machine. Yes, I tried the manual flipper as well. Now, having regressed to dinosaur form, I ride a nice, tame and obedient CB1000R. It has a stalk on the left handlebar and another near my left foot. I cannot imagine how someone would feel confident with DCT on what pretends to be an off-road bike. And a massive weight at that.

@m2menuiserie540 Mate, I am going out on a limb and call you out. I don't think you ever actually owned any dct model. As a dinosaur I imagined this is not the first time you spinner this type of comment on a dct review. The whole "fully in control" story does not make sense anymore. Anyone that has ever owned a dct bike will tell you. Evidently you have never ridden a bike with a quick shifter.

Thanks for your very well-balanced review. The 2024 Africa Twin is an incredible improvement on the release of the 2020 model when it was upgraded to the current 1,084cc motor. The torque has increased and is much smoother and more measured in its deployment from zero to high rpm. It really is a pearler of a twin motor with a great traditional 'twin' sound with the upgraded 2024 muffler. I'm a fan and a Honda tragic from way back and can hardly wait to own one. I would very much like to buy the '25 model next year. HOWEVER, Honda will NOT be getting my money until at least some or all of the following glitches/negatives are resolved: 1) The atrociously long time it takes to boot the TFT screen and THEN it requires a touch on an 'OK' button before giving you access. WTF Honda?! No other manufacturers spoil the ride experience like this so WTF Honda?! 2) The switchgear needs an overhaul - simplify it AND include backlighting 3) An easy way to get the seat height BELOW 800mm. Please don't try to tell me it can't be done Honda. I'm 5'6" (167cm) and I would like to be able to flatfoot. 795mm seat height is a worthy goal Honda. 4) For the top-of-the-line model (mainly road use owners) ditch those ridiculous spoked wheels and give us some tasteful forged cast aluminium wheels. Cleaning spokes is an absolute nightmare. We already have enough cleaning with the chain drive, so, please Honda - some alloys. 5) For two-up touring it most definitely needs some more power. They should either bump the capacity to 1250cc for another 30hp OR, preferably, finally release the supercharged model on which they hold a Japanese patent and as such has been in development since 2019. One would think that simply in the name of competition with the Multistradas, GS1300s, Triumphs et al, Honda would want to increase the power at least somewhat. It is great for low speed stuff but 2-up with luggage on the highway it does need quite a bit more. Please! (from all reports the supercharger design is for low-mid range torque - not meant to be a high-rev Kawasaki H2 competitor). 6) Not mandatory for my purchase but, with DCT, a reverse gear for parking such a heavy baby would be handy. You'd only need 'impulse power' Scotty :-) 7) Does that great sounding rear muffler really have to be the size of a boat anchor? So there's my list of gripes for a bike I love a lot. My wishlist. How about it Honda - all for '25?

Just too heavy. Even heavier than my KTM 1290 SAR monster. I was very tempted by this Honda, until I saw the weight. No, I do not really care that the weight disappears when the bike moves. What is important is picking this bike up and manoeuvring it around in loose gravel surfaces, heaven forbid muddy also.

I want to tell you what happened to me about this bike. First of all, I was a Honda fan until I bought this motorbike. After buying this motorbike, my perspective on Honda is really close to zero. I own a 2020 model L4 Dct adventure sport. Malfunctions that happened to me: 1: there is a suspension failure, it cannot cope with high weight and explodes. Suspension set changed 2 times. Dct: once the gearbox locked while driving at 110 km per hour on the motorway. I faced death. Infotainment: Sometimes the screen freezes when Apple CarPlay is connected or does not connect Apple CarPlay if the engine waits in the sun. Rust: Rusting occurs in the chassis in all versions of this engine after 2019. When I discussed this with Honda service, they say that the situation occurred due to external factors. Of course I can't keep a 250+kg motorbike in my bedroom. Electrical parts: one of the fuses of the engine constantly blows. In the middle of Handem Ynin, I drove 120 km in the dark of night in the middle of the night completely intuitively without any light. The response of the Honda service was that it was a problem that occurred in these models and they changed the fuse free of charge (what if the fuse changes after death, what if it does not change). Last month, ABS malfunction occurred, and since TCs was connected to the same sensor, it was also disabled, and we realised that the fuse burned again. On the other hand, in Turkey, the Ministry of Interior police department is cancelling about 250 AT L1 models ordered to Honda Turkey due to suspension and electronic failures. R1200gs, F850gs, vfr1200 models, which have completed their service life and are in idle condition, have been overhauled, renewed and put into use until the delivery of 500 1300gs ordered. The main reason for this return is that the front suspension of the police officer in Istanbul exploded while chasing the criminal and the officer was injured and taken to intensive care. Instead of Africas, they buy 500 R1300GS and Ktm. There is also a video on KZbin about the delivery of these 500 engines. Africa Twin is a motorcycle that Honda made to take place in that class and I think it is a motorcycle that Honda did not spend any effort on it. maybe cheaper ktm, triumph or bmw can be bought in the 900cc band, which is lighter, or 1300gs, tiger1200, 1290adv can be bought for similar money. I started motorcycling at the age of 21, I am now 41 years old, I have owned over 20 motorcycles and I have personally experienced that Honda's motorcycle quality is far and far behind its competitors in today's conditions. I regret selling my vfr1200 croosstourer motorbike.

Honda almost touched the right spot with this one, besides the weight and the two hands windshield maneuvering set…This could be it. This clutch less bikes, DCT and any other systems like Yamaha released on the FJR years ago, still bug me, strong. I like the quick shifter device as an option for that days you feel like riding a little more aggressively, but no clutch, no shifter pedal? 🧐🤨Is this a giant scooter or an big Adventure electric bike? It’s none? Ok. So, why I’m feeling like it would be like it…? I liked it in cars. And I adapted fast. But two wheels, is a very different vehicle. I don’t know, I'm skeptical about it. Not being able to change the height of the windshield manually while walking is a matter of Honda's safety philosophy. Either it does it stationary or it has an electrical system like the Goldwing. The Africa has a gearshift pedal option for the DCT. The DCT shifts faster than any quickshifter. Honda launched the e-clutch for the CB 650. It has a clutch but if you want, you can let the bike activate it alone, even when leaving or stopping. It only adds 2 kg, is faster and works better than any quickshifter (but loses to the DCT). And you must change gears using the pedal.
@Fernando90054
@Fernando90054 5 ай бұрын
@@wallacemjr it’s good to have those options. If we want to go fully automatic the DCT is on, but it’s good to have the option not to use it, if we prefer to ride on a more manual or traditional manner. 👍🏻

On the weight discussion: the gs1300 lost weight, but also lost its place as a grand adventurer/tourer. Test rode one today. Its half the bike it was. Narrow, low, toy like. Crap/no weather protection, joke screen. Feels like an overpowered, overweight supermoto, with all the supermoto disadvantages and no advantages, in touring terms. I m afraid they will lose half their customers once these new owners start touring this summer. Perhapsmthey will rectify this with an extra fat GSA. Anyway, ATAS are brilliant bikes for one up touring, Docile, soft, economic, reliable, comfortable and fast enough -just.

One cannot get a GS without Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), it's been that way for a long time. If my memory serves me correctly it became "standard" some where in the middle of the 1200GS production run. So to be fair you have to put the electronic suspension on the AT to be fair to the GS. 😊

When you blip the Throttle, in most cases you have the Clutch Engaged, when you do it with a DCT, it basically drives you forward, it’s not an issue, if you use the DCT neutral button, a member of our club was at a garage when a guy on his new Africa Twin with DCT did the throttle blip, shot forward and hit a low wall, went over the top of the wall & bike and rider were damaged significantly, it’s just something to be aware of when you first ride a DCT

Oh well, in a side-by-side comparison, the AF twin and the 1300 GS are worlds apart. The AF is missing several key features like adaptive cruise control, linked brakes, and shaft drive. It also has more vibrations, suffers from brake dive, and the CRF1100 engine doesn’t really excite-it delivers power but lacks the punch you might expect.. Honda could have taken a great leap forward by adding electronic suspension and adaptive cruise control to the NT1100, transforming it into a touring bike that not only leads its class in comfort but also puts its competitors on notice.

I traded my 2022 ATAS ES DCT for a 2024 R1250RT. Yes the DCT is great but for touring 2 up with luggage the dedicated machines like the RT are way better. Biggest minuses to the Honda: Weak brakes Soft suspension Wobbling at higher speeds Seat is a nightmare Drive mode is simply unusable, only SI upwards I did 24k Kms on it but the brakes and suspension on the BMWs are simply the best

Agreed! I'll never sell my 2021 1250 RT! To get a better 2-up bike one would have to go way heavier, like a Goldwing or K1600 but that's too much weight for me.

@@WhiskeyDeanRides I ended up swapping out my Triumph for a 2024 ATAS DCT and it’s night and day between the two bikes. The Africa twin isn’t that fast on the take off, but I don’t feel much engine vibration transfer into the pegs. At speeds 70+ the bike feels real smooth.

How would you compare this to the Tiger 900 GT Pro. The Tiger has more HP, a little less torque, but weighs about 60lbs less. The DCT on the AT is a big draw but the quick shifter on the Tiger is excellent. I found the Tiger to have quicker steering, better egos for a big guy, and more fun to ride, plus a few thousand less. Thoughts?

I have a 21' ATAS manual, the last year they were sold in North America, and I have to say it is the funnest bike I,ve ever had. The 24's are supposed to be coming to North America and I would be very interested to see if the 19" front wheel is that much better on road. In 26k miles it's done it all very well. Gravel and dirt roads are easy even two up and from Arkansa to South Dakota traveling with a bunch of Goldwings it did great. Side note I traded my 22' Goldwing for a 23' RT and loving it, how's your RT doing?

Hi Scott, great review as always👍 Sorry for the question, but I have to ask you: I'm looking at the moment to buy a new adventure bike (only roads riding, without any off road), and my choice is between mid class 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, or 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sport Manual ES. I've tested the Tiger and I really like it, unfortunately I can't test ride the new Africa, but from all the reviews sounds like a great bike too. Which one would you prefer, because you rode both of them? Thanks.

Thank you! For me I'd take the 900 GT Pro not the Rally, especially since you don't need off-road or unless you are tall, then the Rally. The AT is good but it's clinical/sterile and is just a tool like a car to get from point a to b.

Doesn't matter the brand 250 kilo is too heavy for an adv bike to my taste. 250+kg makes it a touring bike and for such purpose I prefer dedicated machine like e.g. RT. Bike of this cathegory should not weigh more than 200-220 max e.g. 900GS, Tenere 700, KTM 890, Triumph Tiger 900....

Honda’s primary issue is with the CRF1100 engine, which is distinctly lackluster-it's overly linear and underpowered. Among its peers, Honda’s 1100 engine is the weakest in 2024. To mask this deficiency, Honda employs a strategy where the DCT automatically drops two gears upon full throttle application.

@ssmith954
@ssmith954 5 ай бұрын
Good question -- note that seat height measures from floor to seat, but your ability to touch the ground can vary based on seat width (which is not taken into account). Inseam typically measures from inside you crotch to around the ankle (ie: where your jeans would go down to), and doesn't take into account the foot and heel (typically another few inches each side).

The GS (Dynamic ESA) will go higher or lower based on the setting too. Have it in road mode and then while stopped and running change it to Dynamic mode, you will feel it get a few mm higher and do it in reverse too the same effect in will go down a few mm. The system will try to accommodate the weight that it is carrying, I call it "auto pre-load", trying to find the optimal travel distance.
