2024 Julian Festival Lecture, Julian and the Trinity, Archbishop Rowan Williams

In his lecture marking the 40th Anniversary of the Friends of Julian of Norwich, Rowan explored Julian's understanding that "where Jesus appears, the blessed Trinity is understood" and how Julian's characterisations of the persons within the Trinity - "almighty, all wisdom and all love" can be mapped over to her understanding of how God "may", "can", "will" and ultimately "shall" make all things well.

I’m baffled that one of the greatest living theologians is giving a mind blowing lecture, and I hear people mingling and chatting in the background and going on like nothing has changed. Perhaps a fitting metaphor. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing this.

Highly annoying visitors chatting away in the background. Why could not the Dean have asked them to respect what was going on. Absolutely ridiculous and inappropriate.

What's with the white Barrister bancollar that the Dean of the Cathedral is wearing? Isn't that a tradition from Reformed Church ministers? Definitely not Catholic, and i guess that's the point. A superficial remark of mine. I know.

They’re called preaching bands. And it’s rare but they are found in the Catholic Church - it’s a bit of university regalia rather ecclesiastical and it was a mark of a priest being highly educated for preaching (ie Hebrew, Greek, Latin skills etc). These days it’s just sort of survived for some reason as regalia for some of the major cathedrals

In some ways I think there may be some confusion here about 1Jn_3:9 and having become partakers of the divine nature 2Pe_1:4 . Man is not born without sin but even so, God did not regard humanity as worthless, in fact the families, including the church were of greatest value and essential to God's being (more than by man he lost). Sinless theology can be dangerous if not understood, true if you are born of God. Nothing gets to God without being so. Not criticising, but doesn't quote from the bible much does he?

Isn't it wonderful that Archbishop Justin Welby turned his back on what would have probably been a very successful career in business and industry to use his gifts in the service of God? I'm full of admiration for anyone who follows a calling for the greater good.

Theology is proof that there is no revealed truth. If there was revealed truth we wouldn't need theology. Just an endless series of implausible acrobatics of tortured minds.

And yet, the 'tortured minds' to which you refer are, and always have been, arguably the happiest of minds, resting in, and loved by, the revealed truth. It's those who never find their way to The Truth are, sadly, lost and unhappy (witness, for example, the deep cynicism and discontent of outspoken atheists). Bishop Rowan Williams is an excellent mind and a compassionate man who has dedicated his life to sharing the revealed truth for the sake of all. For those of us who accept the love of God, our deepest desire is that everyone might accept it, too.

That is behind the ghastly violent missionary impulse and the murderous doctrines of heresy over centuries. Any objective observer of the world would conclude that god is not loving but capricious and nasty. Who would create so evil a world? It's just your masochism that gives your invented god a free pass. Because all you really want is a celestial daddy to look after you. I renounce him and all the works of his deluded fantasist followers.

Theology exists because God has revealed HImself any bit at all, and has attracted lovers to himself who want to study and know everything about Him they can at all, even at the risk of being wrong.
