Welcome to the 2021 Los Angeles Loop. This Segment B stair-walk is the second 20+ mile segment of the full 305 mile, 15 segment, Los Angeles Loop stair-walk that traverses over 808 stairways, with 31,663 stairway up steps, and climbs just over 33,000 feet in total elevation gain. The Loop circumnavigates Los Angeles County, starting and finishing on Naples Island in southeastern Long Beach. This second segment goes south from the corner of Western Ave and Westmont Dr in San Pedro, to Pt Fermin Park, then west along the coastline to the corner of Palos Verdes Dr W and Hawthorne Blvd, visiting 50 stairways on the route. This first half of this walk is a great exploration of San Pedro, including parks, great old neighborhoods, superb murals, and rich history in the downtown area, and of course plenty of stairways to test your legs. We normally break for lunch at the great family-owned and operated Lighthouse Cafe. From the cafe the second half of the route is a fantastic coastal cruise with extraordinary ocean views that are breathtaking on clear days. Do note that coastal does not equate with flat, as this route is hilly and has a number of medium to large stairways, as you walk west and then northward around the peninsula, visiting the Recently rebuilt Ladera Linda Community Center, followed by the Forrestal Nature Reserve, Portuguese Bend slide area, and the route passes the site of the former Wayfarer's Chapel designed by Lloyd Wright, which was disassembled to protect it from the expanding Portuguese Bend landslide, to reach Abalone Cove Shoreline Park with restrooms. From the park, the route visits stairways near Terranea (formerly Marineland), passes the Pt Vicente Lighthouse (which replaced Pt Fermin in the 1920s), finally ending at the 7 - Eleven, just past the northwest corner of the Golden Cove Shopping Center and its associated stairways. This video was shot in September of 2021 with some 2024 additions, with a GoPro Hero 9 Black video camera, at 10X hyperlapse, meaning that the action is sped-up by a factor of 10, so this just over half hour video captures a little over 5 hours of walking. In the video, I used titles to identify each stairway, most streets/parks, and many other interesting features, including one famous movie location from the 1963 comedy, It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. I’ve also set the action to the duty free electronic music by various artists. I created this video so you can see what the route looks like, and with the map below, you are welcome to try it yourself, or with friends.
