As a Sri Lankan I am IN LOVE with our team's hand-embroidered uniform!! Huge step up from 2020. To me it's really giving Kandyan royal/noble wear, and I think that was the idea. Stunning. Love the overall unisex aspect of them too. The "skirt" worn by men is a sarong, which is commonly worn in South/Southeast Asia and parts of Arabia and Africa. It's like a tube of fabric that's tied/folded in front. The main motif is a lotus flower, some are arranged into "chakras" that also look like lily pads. It's really neat The designer they chose, Lovi Ceylon, specializes in traditional style clothes such as the wedding dress, which is based on the aforementioned Kandyan royal attire. So it's a great fit! Bravo, mage rata!!! 🇱🇰💖

Per team Poland. I'm happy you liked it! The collection was created by a brand from Poznań called Bizuu. Generally in previous years our team usually got more sporty looks, and they told the designers they had felt a bit too casual compared to others. Looking for more "elegant" inspirations, they turned to Polish sportswear from interwar period. The jumper is not really inspired by cricket, but by outfits worn by Polish athletes in the 20s and 30s. Tbh an average Pole wouldn't even be able to tell you the rules of cricket, so. Oh, and the flowery motifs are based on iconic (for us, at least) Koniaków lace.

Exactly my feelings; for all three! Poland was not far behind; same as with Shri Lanka, Austria, and Turkey... they could have doubled up on medals for them all, ahah! Those are people of great taste and artistry and they know how to show it! I also went crazy with France's lapels. But the vest needed something serious about the arms... a great thing the athletes are much tanned. I understand their concept of the Effiel Tower shape, however. But the old look of the old-fashioned Air France hostesses needed perhaps a little bit more thinking. Enough of the soft shapeless for all occasions. There are so many ways to find comfort in clothing, and yet show pride in who and what we are, and/or represent!

🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹! Proud Haïtian here! I've know about the uniform for weeks and was wondering if u were going to comment. And tadaaa! Here you are with a video. Also: the "print" is actually a painting created by a respected Haitian painter (Phillipe Doddard). To put it in perspective, my mom saw his name and gasped that he collaborated. Painting in my culture is a big deal. You don't walk into a household without some kind of art and then there's the best of the best and Doddard is one. He was asked to create something for the uniform. So this is custom.

Yes, it is Mongolian. Mongolian clothes are suitable for horse riding, archery etc. Thus, clothes have belts, tend to be tighter around belly area, to not forbid movement the body area is not too tight. Shoes are suitable for horse riding, great for walking on the difficult places like forest, desert, mountains. Plus, standing collars were in nomadic empires many centuries ago too. Those who are doubting the origin should have debate with the mother nature and warrior lifestyle.

@emmaking73674 ай бұрын
After having a bit of a look around the internet, the on-field uniforms designed by ASICS have much more obvious indigenous artwork features (the rugby uniforms for example). I also found that Sportscraft did actually collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island artists to design the scarfs, pocket squares and handbags (albeit the inside has the print 🙃). There’s also apparently a “restriction” that says the opening ceremony uniform has to include a blazer. I really do wish indigenous designs were put more at the forefront for our opening ceremony uniform considering that is the event that most non-sports fans will actually watch. The skirts being a perfect example- why a boring ombré when we could’ve had a beautiful, unique artwork piece?
@cuteincolour42894 ай бұрын

Dear Luke, thank you for this analysis! I have a few notes on the Mexican uniform. I was not happy with its overall design but I am happy to see my home country represented in the Olympics. Mexico was the first Latin American city that hosted the summer games. The graphic design for its campaign is quite iconic and timeless, as it followed the Op-Art trend of the late 1960s. It would have been cool had the designer incorporated those elements of optical art into this year’s uniform. I love the addition of the pink though, as pink is considered the local color of CDMX. The city is covered in pink motifs: taxis, buses, the flora, and buildings are often painted in pink. The heart design element I think borrows from the city of Guanajuato. The city is an important site for Mexico’s pre and post colonial history as it is the birth (“la cuna”) of the Mexican independence movement. Guanajuato is often referred to as “el corazón de México”, meaning, “the heart of Mexico”. Guanajuato is also the birthplace of Diego Rivera. Most importantly, the Angel is seen in the back of the uniform. I loved your comparison of the Angel with greek mythology. I have never thought of it that way, but so clever to incorporate this in the Olympic uniform! The Angel though is the iconic “Ángel de la Independencia”, an iconic monument in beautiful Mexico City. The Angel is located in the middle of Avenida Reforma, one of the city’s most important avenues. I just wanted to share this with you! Thank you for always posting top-notch content!❤

This design got so much backlash from Thai people because it's so outdated in so many Thai people's eyes and it's really similar to old fashioned clothes often wearing by old yet not so beloved politicians/governors. Worst part is knowing that whoever designed the opening outfit, and whoever approved of them, really don’t care nor understand the importance of a good personal image in such an event! People from the Brazilian Olympic Committee have literally said “it’s not a fashion show” 🙄 Like that justifies wearing whatever to a ceremony that will be viewed globally. The cherry on top was the chief of marketing for Riachuelo saying they were inspired by Dior’s New Look. Bitch, where?!?!?! So baffled why the UK is having a Hawaiian shirt moment, but I can explain the flower print - it’s each country’s national flower: Rose - England Daffodil - Wales Thistle - Scotland Clover/Shamrock - Northern Ireland

Polish people aren’t really interested in cricket so the sweater was probably purely an aesthetic choice. But! The florals are composed of wheat and polish meadow flowers ❤

Mongolia was my favourite from the start. My daughter bought the Canadian LuLuLemon shorts you pictured. In the floral pattern there is also a moose, a wolf, and an orca. They are very nice and the quality is good. The white and red uniform is being called "bacon" by its detractors.

The flowers on the second British look are our national flowers, English Rose, Scottish Thistle, Welsh daffodil and North Irish shamrock. I agree more generally though I really wish we incorporated more British tailoring elements or something because right now they’re so boring.

Knowing that, if it had been a proper tailored full sleeve shirt instead of a short sleeve casual shirt it would have looked amazing!

I think that print would have read more British with a white background rather than dark blue (would feel like a traditional floral print rather than a Hawaiian shirt) But still not good, the opening look just reads as a bland nothing…and kind of fast fashion in style.

I like the idea of having all the flowers, but not the execution. Maybe try the national animals next. The Olympics need more unicorns and dragons. 😉

You know what, totally get the whole Mexico thing (I’m Mexican American) and I know some people weren’t happy about it and it’s not to everyone’s taste. I personally LOVED IT because of the symbolism. So the pink used is referred as “Rosa Mexicana” or Mexican Pink (this shade of pink is very close to us) The little hearts and detailed illustrations on the sleeves are suppose to represent “milagritos” or little miracles. They are silver charms that we carry that are similar, in way, to good luck charms. As for the Angel in the back, that is to represent the big golden statue in Mexico City: El Angel de la Victoria, or The Angel of Victory translated in English. Men’sFashion wanted to make a sleek but street fashion statement for the Mexican team, away from the topical tricolor. I think it’s a pretty unique style for the team, again, away from the typical green white and red. Totally respect your opinion! I just wanted to share the symbolism! 👍🏽

As an Irish person I do not generally go out of my way to defend the UK buuuut, those are the plant/flowers that represent each of the nations that make it up. Rose - England, Daffodil - Wales, Thistle - Scotland, and Shamrock - Northern Ireland. The set dressing is heinous though because they clearly didn't commission anyone to make the florals specifically so the scale on the different flowers is I went to the craft store and this is what they had...

Colombia's opening ceremony look was a trench coat in the "traditional" trench coat color with that same motif at the bottom. The motif is inspired by "cañaflecha", a textile from here, and with the colors of our flag of course. The uniforms/looks were made by Totto, a colombian backpacks/suitcase company (and athletic gear like fanny packs, hats, wallets, etc) that has also some sportswear things (mostly jackets and windbreakers and tshirts). It's pretty much the only company that sponsors our athletes here and the backpacks are QUALITY! My father has been using the same backpack as a traveling one for 20 years, it's in perfect shape.

About the Mexican uniforms .. the imagery on the sleeves are called milagros. The accent color is officially known as Rosa Mexicano and I believe the image on back of the jacket represents the Angel of Independence .. one of the most famous monuments in Mexico City.

It's embarassing that they chose to stay away from the rich history of textiles, embroidery and artisanal craft that Mexico has to offer. Instead, they chose an angel(which is more representative of European art and religion). They were not gala worthy and definitely not representative of the country.

German here, Austrias uniform is based on the typical “Trachten” that are common throughout the Alp Region but especially at home in Bavaria and Austria. Typical elements for male outfits include: (wild) leather shorts, a white shirt and a waistcoat made out of a heavier woven fabric (similar to tweed) traditionally the outfit was often completed by a hat and a coat if it’s colder. (Those tie more into the fashion of hunting/sport shooting clubs “Schützenvereine”tho…) For Women a Dirndl is traditional or as seen here a formal skirt, a white blouse and a waistcoat though often paired with an apron :) Hope this helped 🫶

8:34 For Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), I love the avant garde take while still showing off Taiwanese culture. The shoes ARE navy, not black. The material of the shoes and the flower lupins are also symbolic to the country. The wavy blue and green colors of the suit are inspired by a Taiwanese painting that showcases the mountains and the seas of the island.

I am an Indian, and I absolutely HATE the Indian look. They could have done SOO much better. Could have included some designs like the peacock or embroidery, something that represents the diversity of this country instead of just adding national flag's colours to the border. The worst part is that even if the designers wanted to use the current design, they could have used intricate hand sewing for the borders like it is done by traditional artisans but instead they chose to print it.

For the Austrians I can say this is a very traditional take. The sleeveless vestes are a staple piece for a lot of national costume wearers men and women alike. The "Lederhose" (hunting calf, leather pants) is THE goat of mens traditional wear often worn with suspenders which are not seen here. The tone is usually more reddish brown, but I find the grey brown in combination with the beigy blazers quite appealing. As for the skirt, quite uncommon to see a long leather skirt like that. I find the length quite strange yet the fit is quite common in traditional wear skirts, but it's also not the best picture. This ensemble is definitely a more grown up/modernized take on the womens wear as usually women wear the "Dirndl" which is a dress with a corsetlike design which is very flattering on any bodytype and is a available from mini to maxi with an endless array of colors and patterns. Usually more middle aged women wear this ensemble, but also the vest is a staple in musicians uniform who participate in our local folk music clubs. I'm glad they didn't go for the red and white theme tbh as there are checkered shirts that are worn with the Lederhose often. The usual choice for a full on trad look would be some sort of leather loafer, but their take with the crisp white sneakers pulls in the sport aspect in this context nicely. This was an appropriate choice I'm happy to see.
